Prep Notebook: Castle Rock to honor '88 title team

A ceremony to honor Castle Rock’s 1988 state championship football team will be held during the Rockets’ nonleague home football game against Adna on Sept. 26.

All former players, coaches and cheerleaders are invited to attend the festivities. For details, call the high school at 501-2930.

Legendary head coach Tom Bate guided the Rockets to a perfect 13-0 record in 1988, which included a 23-20 victory over Ephrata in the Kingdome for the state crown.

RAL nominates eight for Wendy’s Heisman award

Eight scholar-sthletes from R.A. Long have been nominated by the school’s administrative team for the Wendy’s High School Heisman award.

Nominees are submitted to the Wendy’s High School Heisman committee, and one boy and one girl from each school are selected in mid-October to move on to state competition. State winners are picked in early November, and 12 national finalists are selected from the state winners in late November.

All 12 national finalists are invited to a ceremony held in conjunction with the Heisman Trophy presentation in New York City in mid-December, where the champion is crown.

Individuals are selected at the school level based on their academic aptitude, athletic talent, and exceptional commitment to their school and community.

Nominated from RAL are Kelsey Craft, Katie Gudgell, Emily Hudson, Danielle Small, Desi Tapani, Josh Kim, Johnny Nguyen and Taylor Woodruff. All eight nominees have grade point averages of 4.0.

Wahkiakum’s McClain is a WIAA Athlete of the Week

Wahkiakum senior running back Bryce McClain has been honored as the Class 2B Athlete of the Week by the Seattle Times and WIAA.

McClain was selected after carrying the ball 22 times for 204 yards in the Mules’ 13-0 victory over Naselle in the season opener on Sept. 5.

Toutle Lake volleyball gets Class 2B state ranking

Toutle Lake is the lone area team earning a top-10 ranking in the recent Washington Prep Volleyball Poll, conducted by the state’s volleyball coaches.

TL is ranked 10th in Class 2B. La Conner leads the poll, followed by Davenport, Colfax, Manson and Wilbur-Creston in the top five.

Mead of Spokane leads the Class 4A poll, with Kentwood and Lewis and Clark comprising the top three. East Valley of Spokane is the top 3A team, followed by Auburn-Mountainview, Shadle Park and Prairie.

Grandview is No. 1 in 2A, followed by Selah, Lynden, North Mason and Black Hills. Tumwater grabbed the seventh spot and Fife is ranked ninth. Unbeaten Mark Morris was unranked.

Connell is atop the 1A poll, followed by Goldendale, King’s and Cedar Park Christian.
