Area Roundup: Rockets survive five-set marathon

CASTLE ROCK — In the first volleyball meeting ever between Castle Rock and Astoria, the Rockets dug deep and survived a five-set thriller Thursday night in a nonleague matchup.
Castle Rock prevailed 25-10, 23-25, 20-25, 25-10, 15-11 to improve to 2-0.
“This was a big test for us,” CR coach Jeana Bayes said. “We played hard and made some really good decisions down the stretch.”
Emmy Dolan exploded for 16 kills and eight stuff blocks, and Heather Shulke had eight kills, 13 digs, three stuff blocks and 38 assists for the winners. Milly Manring (eight kills, two blocks) and Kat Byrum (10 digs, 10 service points) also played a big part.
Lumberjills handle Bay
Brittany Weiand dished 28 assists and served 11 points with two aces as R.A. Long swept Hudson’s Bay 25-13, 25-17, 25-16 in nonleague volleyball at Joe Moses Court on Thursday.
“We were able to get everyone into the match, and we didn’t lose any momentum when our reserves were on the floor,” RAL coach Jennifer Hefley said. “We’re still playing well as a team, and I’m excited about the team and its future.”
Marnee Clancy served 13 points with three aces and had four digs, and Megan McCormack added six points. Katie Gudgell had six kills, Hannah Johnson added seven and handed out 21 assists, and Katie Sarysz chipped in five kills for RAL (3-0).
Beavs blitz Battle Ground
WOODLAND — Staci McLendon loomed large at the net for Woodland as the Class 2A Beavers rolled past 4A Battle Ground 28-26, 25-22, 25-19 here Thursday in nonleague volleyball action.
Woodland came from behind to win the first set, then cruised in the next two.
McLendon had 15 kills and four blocks for the winners (2-1). Cassidy Bragg added five kills and Rikki Hall dished nine assists, while Kayla Christensen was 17-of-19 serving with two aces and had 13 assists.
Kalama wins a marathon
STEVENSON — Kalama and Stevenson will face off twice in Trico Division play.
They set the tone for quite a league series with an epic nonleague clash here Thursday, won by Kalama 15-25, 25-14, 20-25, 25-23, 15-12.
“Stevenson is a good team. We play them two other times,” Chinooks coach Jeni O’Neil said. “It’ll be a fight.”
The nearly three-hour match saw Kalama “finally realize that (it) has the heart and the skill to be successful,” O’Neil said. “My girls played awesome. They pulled together.”
Haley Bellows facilitated the attack with 26 assists, feeding K.C. Schmit (12 kills) and Chelsea Rinard (seven kills), among others.
Whitney Westrick had 12 digs, and Sam Boatman and Maggie Aschoff led the way with their serving for Kalama (1-2).
Adna cools off Comets
NASELLE — Naselle showed life in the third set of its nonleague volleyball match against Adna here Thursday, but the Pirates ran off the final 12 points to clinch a 25-15, 25-14, 25-19 sweep.
“We played with them in the third game and jumped to a big lead,” Comets coach Kim Eaton said. “We were up 19-13. Then they finished the game on us. Serve-receive was just a little bit under par for us.”
Emily Green had five kills and played a good all-around game for Naselle (1-3). Orianne Condon played well in her first game at libero.
Ony turns back Toledo
ONALASKA — Top-notch serving couldn’t save Toledo from a 25-10, 25-19, 25-12 loss to Onalaska on Thursday in a nonleague volleyball match.
Toledo’s Holly Durham had six kills and played good defense at the net. She had 100-percent serving, as did Kelsey Stone, Haylee Ashley, Hillary Roder and Sarah Jordan.
“We served well. I thought we played well,” Toledo coach Rene Ketchum said. “Onalaska’s always tough, but I know we can do better. Each match we play, we’re getting a little bit stronger.”
Eagles sweep Mules JV
CATHLAMET — Myriah Dombrowsky had a solid all-around match with eight digs, four kills, five aces and 12 assists as Three Rivers Christian swept the Wahkiakum junior varsity 25-22, 25-12 on Thursday.
Also for TRC (1-1), Catherine Maldonado had nine digs and served four aces, and Nikki Barnwell had six digs and four kills.
TRC coach Jaymie Cox praised the play of freshman Sarah Walker, who competed in her first varsity match.
Rainier keeps on rolling
PORTLAND — Cassie Hanks dished 18 assists and Amanda Schwegler had seven kills as Rainier had little trouble putting away Riverdale 25-9, 25-10, 25-21 in Lewis and Clark 3A League volleyball on Wednesday.
Raeanne Hanks added six kills, Niki Wagner five and Mollee Schwegler three. Wagner, Bailey Jackson and Amanda Schwegler served three aces apiece.
Wildcats top Lady Fish
LA CENTER — Alexa Wirkkala, Carly Kitzman and Marin McDonnell combined to serve eight aces, but Ilwaco was swept by La Center 25-14, 25-11, 25-19 in SWW 1A Trico Division volleyball on Tuesday.
Wirkkala served four aces, with McDonnell and Kitzman added two apiece. Charlotte Johnson also notched two kills.
CROSS COUNTRY
Lumberjacks notch a win
WASHOUGAL — It was worth the wait for R.A. Long cross country coach Nick Stumbo.
For the first time in Stumbo’s three-year tenure, the Lumberjack boys won a meet, edging both Hockinson and Washougal in a Greater St. Helens 2A League dual here Thursday.
“I don’t know the last time we won a three-way meet,” Stumbo said. “Not last year, not the year before that, and I’m pretty sure not the year before, either.”
R.A. Long’s top seven finishers all crossed the tape within two minutes of each another, a sign that “they were really pushing each other,” he added.
Nathan Richards finished third (18:17) and Cole Blackstone fourth (18:32) to lead the way for the Jacks, who tallied 34 points to Hockinson’s 41 and Washougal’s 56.
Ray Nugent was eighth in 18:58, Gray Earnest ninth in 19:09 and Bill Davenport 13th in 19:36.
“Our whole team just ran really strong,” Stumbo said. “It was fun to see.”
The Jills ran incomplete in the girls’ race, won by Hockinson (22 points). But RAL’s three runners finished in the top half, led by Allison Schneider in fifth (23:03). Rachel Washington was seventh (24:50) and Leah Ahrens 12th (25:23).
MM teams post wins
Mark Morris beat Woodland and Ridgefield in both sides of Thursday’s GSHL 2A cross country meet at Lake Sacajawea.
The boys’ scores were MM 29, Ridgefield 44, Woodland 52, and the girls’ scores were MM 21, Ridgefield 43, Woodland 70.
J.J. Jason of the Monarchs won the boys’ race with a time of 17 minutes and 30 seconds, and his teammate Kelly Loch was second in 17:44. Jesse Poole (seventh, 18:46), Sean Footh (eighth, 18:58) and Eric Botten (11th, 19:51) also ran well for MM
Mark Morris’ Hayley Brusewitz took the girls’ side in 19:51, followed by Savina Rodriguez (third, 20:41), Joanna Feeney (fourth, 21:53), Kayla DuBois (sixth, 23:11) and Julia Chun (seventh, 23:18).
Tyler King led the Woodland boys with an 18:25, good for fourth place. Nick Watts (sixth, 18:41), Isaiah Arn (10th, 19:50), Luke Donald (15th, 20:02) and Caleb Kaiser (18th, 22:30) rounded out the Beavers.
The Woodland girls were led by Michelle Kooiman (fifth, 23:00), followed by Beverly Courtway (14th 26:24), Emylia Denis (15th, 26:52), Leah Kooiman (17th, 29:19) and Stephanie Kaiser (20th, 31:37).
Ilwaco boys, Ulbricht shine
MONTESANO — The Ilwaco boys captured the title at the Montesano Invitational cross country meet on Thursday, while Cameo Ulbricht of Ilwaco won the girls’ race by nearly two minutes.
The Fishermen netted 42 points, followed by Montesano (52), Naselle (60), Tenino (89) and North Beach (106).
Stephen Berglund led Ilwaco with a second-place finish (17:39), with Tanner Weidner (sixth, 18:22), Evin Laplatney (seventh, 18:25), Mitchel Mortensen (ninth, 18:36) and Jason Huntley (28th, 21:19) rounding out the winning effort.
Jared Larson of Montesano won the meet.
Montesano was the only girls’ team to run with a complete five-person lineup. Ulbricht won with a time of 21:14, with the second-place finisher from South Bend breaking the tape at 23:13.
Also for Ilwaco, Katie Denton took fifth (25:47), and Rissa Gerke (33:06) and Anna Gerke (33:20) were 17th and 18th, respectively.
“That was a very good run for Cameo,” Ilwaco coach Sarah Taylor said. “She probably could have been 30 seconds faster, too, but she had trouble finding the end of the course.”
Rockets run well at Pass
RANDLE — Two Castle Rock runners set personal records at an eight-team cross country meet here Thursday.
Team scores were not available for the boys’ portion of the meet, while host White Pass won the girls’ half with 43 points.
For the CR boys, Loren Kennington finished 11th with a personal-record time of 18:45, followed by teammates Kaj Holten in 12th (18:50), Travis Patrick in 13th (18:52), Tyler Eccles in 27th (20:04) and Kody McCarthy in 31st (personal record, 20:13).
The Castle Rock girls ran incomplete. Freshman Leticia Jones led CR with a 20th-place finish in 25.20 in her first varsity race. Kelci Holten was 26th in 26:55, Erica Heltemes was 29th in 27:23 and Rebecca Woeller was 37th in 31:18.
TENNIS
Jacks improve to 4-1
BATTLE GROUND — R.A. Long ran its nonleague record to 4-1 following a 5-0 sweep of Battle Ground in nonleague tennis on Thursday.
“We faced a solid team, but we played smarter and were on our game,” RAL coach Rally Wallace said.
Singles winners for RAL were Josh Kim (6-0, 6-2) and Jonathan Haukaas (6-1, 6-4), and doubles winners were Taylor Woodruff and Johnny Nguyen (6-1, 6-2), Ryan Cathcart and Carl Johnson (6-1, 6-1) and Erikson Kolberg and Nick Schoen (6-2, 6-1).
Brenc sparks Monarchs
VANCOUVER — Willie Brenc swept his opponent 6-0, 6-0 as Mark Morris rolled to a 6-0 victory over Hudson’s Bay in nonleague tennis on Thursday.
Also winning singles matches for MM (3-1) were Kelly Gilchrist (6-1, 6-1) and Jeff Koss (6-0, 6-2). Doubles winners were Colin Luh and Jared Houten (6-0, 6-3), Ryan Dawkins and Tyler Stewart (6-0, 6-0), and Kramer Rapp and Ethan Winters (6-2, 6-0).
SOCCER
Marre spurs MM to win
Alyssa Marre scored off an assist by Courtney Teeters midway through the second half to lift Mark Morris to a 2-1 victory over Kelso at Northlake Field on Thursday in a nonleague soccer match.
Marre also scored in the first half for the Monarchs (1-1-1), who picked up their first win of the season and handed Kelso its first defeat.
“It was a fantastic win for us,” MM coach Eric Maxey said. “We started off the season against three pretty good 4A schools, and to get this first win is big, especially against our rival across the river. Kelso played aggressive. They have a lot of speed and talent. We had to play our best game to beat them.”
Marre tallied in the first half off an assist from Christy Polis to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.
Bri Krieder scored the equalizer for Kelso off an assist from Brittany Carterby 10 minutes into the second half.
“A lot of times when we play Mark Morris, we feel like we lost it as opposed to them winning,” Kelso coach John Fromdahl said. “I was telling Eric, Mark Morris won this game. They out-hustled and out-muscled us. We are a speed and finesse team, and for the first 30 minutes, my girls were shell-shocked.
“This was good for us,” he added. “We haven’t faced anybody like that.”
Jenna Bloomfeldt was a standout for Kelso (1-1-2).
For Mark Morris, Colby Pittman and Brittany Beard were standouts “up front,” Maxey said, and Kelci Dubois played well defensively.
Jills draw with Fort
VANCOUVER — Alia Mauro notched her third consecutive shutout, and Danielle Small sparked R.A. Long with her defensive leadership, but the Jills settled for an 0-0 tie with Fort Vancouver here Thursday in a nonleague soccer match.
RAL (1-1-2) “generated more offense” than Fort Vancouver, but the Trappers’ goalkeeper “made some great saves,” Jills coach John Bates said.
Small “played outstanding on defense,” he added.
“Since I’ve been coaching, I’ve not seen an R.A. Long girl take over a game like that,” Bates said. “She had a hold of the game by the neck and set an example for the rest of the girls. I was proud of her. It was neat to see.”
United blanks Rock-On
TOLEDO — Molly Deming’s direct kick in the 77th minute broke a scoreless tie as Toledo/Winlock United held off Rock-On 1-0 in SWW 1A Evergreen Division soccer on Thursday.
Rock-On is a combined team of players from Mossyrock and Onalaska high schools.
United goalie Lia Lucas notched the shutout, making one save.
“We played good defense, and they (Rock-On) packed everyone in the back because they knew we had been playing some good opponents and scoring,” United coach Horst Malunat said. “They didn’t get a lot of shots against us because they had only one forward.”
United (2-2, 1-0 league) visits Rochester on Tuesday.
Beavers stymie Stevenson
STEVENSON — Paige Bosen netted goals in each half as Woodland rolled to a 4-0 victory over Stevenson in nonleague soccer on Thursday.
“Stevenson is a developing team, and we were able to work on some things that we’ve tried to put into the game plan,” Woodland coach Jeff Flanagan said. “We spaced the field well and did a nice job passing, and we’re starting to do some things to benefit us.”
Bosen scored the first goal of the match off an assist from Marva Warndahl. Rachelle Olson added an unassisted score, and Megan Waser converted on a feed from Jessica Pain to give Woodland a 3-0 lead at the break.
Bosen added an insurance tally with an unassisted goal in the second half for Woodland (2-1-1).

Bulldogs bite Lady Devils
BELLEVUE — Western Division-leading Bellevue was too powerful for the Lower Columbia College Lady Devils as the Bulldogs shut out the Lady Devils 6-0 in NWAACC women’s soccer on Thursday.
Bellevue (6-0) took a 4-0 lead at halftime, highlighted by two goals from Daniela Gonzalez. The Bulldogs added two insurance tallies in the second half, including another goal by Gonzalez to complete her hat trick.
LCC (2-6, 1-5 league) visits Shoreline on Saturday.
GOLF
O’Malley leads Woodland
WOODLAND — Dakota O’Malley carded a round of 36 to lift Woodland to a 191-238 victory over R.A. Long in Greater St. Helens 2A League golf at Lewis River on Thursday.
Rounding out the Woodland scorecard were John-Michael Pilot, Tegan Winters and Keaton Burnett with rounds of 38, and Trey Udy with 41.
For R.A. Long, Kip Lessard (44), Kevin Sheehy (44), Shane Oliva (46) and Kevin Nida (52) rounded out the card.
Woodland (4-0-1) visits Washougal at Orchard Hills Monday, while R.A. Long (0-3) hosts Mark Morris at Mint Valley Golf Course.

Kelso 33, Fort Vancouver 6 — Quinn Cutler rushed for two touchdowns, and Slate Miller and Joey Miller ran for one each for the Hilanders (1-1-1). Levi Nelson also caught a TD pass from Trevor Feeney. Defensively, Josh Pino and Mitchell Grasser had interceptions for Kelso.
Rainier 30, Mark Morris 20 — For MM (2-1), Seth Pedersen passed for 125 yards and threw scoring passes to Jesse White (12 yards) and Nikko Asbell (20 yards). Jacob Hamlik scored on a 9-yard run, and Pedersen added a two-point conversion run. Defensive standouts included linebackers Hamlik and Dylan Patterson.
