Autumn leaves are starting to appear, and the City of Longview is issuing its fall reminder that only leaves from city-maintained trees may be placed in the street for pickup.

Pickup will take place from October through January. The city composts the leaves.

City Street Supervisor Rick Chinchen asks citizens to follow these guidelines for leaf disposal:

n Place only leaves from city-maintained trees in the streets. Yard debris is the property owner’s responsibility. Leaves from privately owned trees can be taken to the Cowlitz County Landfill free from Oct. 1 through April 15.

n Place leaves in rows about one foot from the curb to allow for drainage. This also makes it easier for the street sweeper to pick them up.

n Do not put branches or sticks in leaf piles to avoid damaging the sweeper.

n Be patient. Leaf pick up is on a structured schedule and will be done up as soon

as possible.

Call 442-5620 if you have questions or want leaves delivered for composting.

" Yes, please be patient when waiting for the city to pay someone to sweep up the leaves. The Longview City Council is dealing with a financial crisis. They will need to cut a policeman and let the street sweeper keep his job. How about home composting? It is just leaves. It is very disheartening that any city worker may have to face a job cut, but I prefer criminals off the streets before the leaves. "
