Longview K9 looks to Chase away crime

Longview's new police dog, Chase, is a curious canine, constantly moving as he sniffs the floor, wastebaskets and a photographer's camera bag.

His persistence will help make him a good tracking dog, said his handler, Longview police officer Tim Deisher.

"I've wanted to work with a working dog for a long time," said Deisher, 36, who has been with LPD 12 1/2 years.

Deisher and Chase, an 18-month-old German shepherd, leave Monday for 10 weeks of training in Pierce County.

"We will cover everything involved in handling a dog," Deisher said Wednesday. "Obedience, tracking, handler protection, and obviously we'll work on sleeve work, so when and if he needs to bite, he'll know how to do it."

Deisher or the trainer, a Pierce County deputy, will wear a heavily padded sleeve while teaching Chase to bite.

"There's also a full body suit, which allows the dog to practice biting different areas," Deisher said. When they return in December, Chase will begin his duties as the eighth police dog in LPD's history. His immediate predecessor, K9 Bruno, retired in July.

The other dogs currently working in law enforcement are Nitro, a tracking dog, and Annie, a drug-sniffing dog, both with the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office.

As with Annie, Bruno and LPD's former K9 Reno, Chase was purchased with a fund at Bank of America started in 1997 by Holly and Heather Bishop of Bishop's Bail Bonds. Police officials estimated it costs about $15,000 to purchase a dog and pay for his equipment and training.

"The department and I are very thankful for the donations," Deisher said.

"So far we've raised $7,000 with our solicitation of our friends who are supportive of police dogs," Holly Bishop said Wednesday. "We're hoping to pay the full amount of the dog. I'm waiting to get the total figures before soliciting the rest of the funds."

Bishop said 100 percent of all donations go toward the charity.

"He's the least expensive officer on the force. All he needs is love and attention," Bishop said. "It's a good, sound deal."

Generous contributions have come from Kiwanis and other civic organizations, Don Rodman, S&R Sheet Metal and John Mughal and the customers and staff of his business, Bruno's Pizza, he said.

"They're very civic-minded, both Don and John, very support of law enforcement," Bishop said.

He approves of the name Chase, which he said is "an easy name."

It's not the name the dog was born with, Deisher said. Born in Germany, his original name was Bac von Haus Lohe. A breeder brought him from Germany to Snohomish, where Deisher, LPD Officer Alan Buchholz and the trainer chose him.

Deisher and his wife, Suzanne, have always liked the name Chase, which they would have used to name a son if they'd had one. They have three daughters, ages 6 to 13.

"So I kind of have my son," Deisher said with a grin.

" Beautiful dog. I have been a dog fancier all my life. However, it occurs to me why is it that the POLICE can take their SERVICE dog into public and DISABLED PEOPLE CAN'T?

So I wrote a letter to the U.S. Government office that accepts complaints of this nature on behalf of disabled persons. I complained about our local governments ignoring the rights of disabled people and I named places.

How about some other people who feel the same about this issue giving a helping hand to the disabled? Realize most of them do not have computers like we have and can't do this for themselves; they usually languish in difficulties without aid.

The email address for the U.S. Govt office that takes complaints is:

row@access-board.gov "

" Rural Citizen- As it was clearly stated in recent articles of The daily News, Disabled people ARE allowed to bring their animals into public IF they are clearly identified; and done so correctly. POLICE dogs are; as well as their handlers. I dont think you would be complaining if one of these dogs caught a criminal that broke into your house..... "

" roundy russ: read up on police dog training. Dogs and handlers have to be trained TOGETHER at the same time. Each dog and handler are a unique pair. You can't just buy a trained and ready to go police dog out of a catalog. And if you read the article, you'd see that donations are helping to pay for the dog. "

" Roudy Russ: It clearly states in the article that Chase was purchased with donations. Please read the article before spouting off. "

" Awwwww. He's so cute and cuddly. Maybe I'll have to start a pursuit just so I can steal him for myself. A lil' doggy bite,..oh well it'll be worth it. "

hawkster wrote on Sep 18, 2008 12:01 PM:

" rural citizen - disabled people with the proper certification for their service dogs ARE, and should be, allowed into government buildings. people who use excuses to bring their dogs into buildings without proper certification can not. there is a difference. why dont we send emails to our state government asking them to do something about lawsuits that could only hurt our economy and city budget even more?

on another note, Chase is going to be a great asset to our community and i wish him and his handler great success. "

" To any of you who have forgotten RENO and all the arrests he participated in how the heck do you think that happened. The two officers had to train together. So if it costs, it costs, some times more is less and in this case I say horray for Chase! "

roudy russ wrote on Sep 18, 2008 3:19 PM:

" Ya, ya, my stupidity for not reading the whole artical. And Tazar baby I have had nothing to fear ever since I quit sticking needles in my arms over 6 years ago. And no I was not a worthless tweeker, I worked during my addiction. "

Rubicon wrote on Sep 18, 2008 4:01 PM:

" I'm sure the dog has already been trained in the 3 main areas. But they need to go through the handler and dog training program for police work. I'm positive the dog already has training degrees. "

Tortoise wrote on Sep 18, 2008 5:21 PM:

" roudy russ: a working tweeker? Great. But still contributing to the epidemic of illegal drug use that plagues this nation. Sorry, it just seems you're kind of downplaying your involvement in the drug problem by saying you had a job. That said, congratulations on being clean for six years. "

Drayvan wrote on Sep 19, 2008 11:09 AM:

" Oh, and to the people replyiyng to Rural Citizen... you're all wrong! See the article discussion about the disabled women and their animals, who were asked to leave the Hall of Justice and the Fair. It appears that the County was wrong in it's new policy concerning service animals, even broke a federal law or two as well... "
