Area Roundup: Haight helps Monarchs pound Prairie

BRUSH PRAIRIE — Rebecca Haight, one of the top net threats in Southwest Washington, showed why on Tuesday night during Mark Morris’ four-set nonleague volleyball victory over Prairie on Tuesday night.

Haight hammered 23 kills and made 13 digs as the Monarchs remained undefeated with a 25-23, 25-23, 16-25, 26-24 victory over the Falcons.

Danielle Gilchrist had 31 assists and eight service points for MM (3-0). Tara Anderson was the top Monarch server with 10 points, three of them aces, and Alesha Schulz had nine points and three aces.

Shawna Smith (13 digs), Kinzi Williams (six kills), Shantelle Savage (five kills) and Jill Isaacson (11 digs, five service points, perfect serving) also excelled for MM.

Ducks trip up Chinooks

TOUTLE — It was a roller-coaster ride, but Toutle Lake hung on for a 25-21, 23-25, 25-10, 14-25, 15-4 defeat of Kalama on Tuesday in nonleague volleyball.

“It was a great match for us,” TL coach Don Merzoian said. “Both teams were up and down, obviously, but it was great to finish a five-set match and come out on top.”

Brandi Malakoff, the Ducks’ libero, set the tone with her excellent passing, defense and serving. Kiana Saluni played well at the net with seven kills, and Tiffany Wend (five kills) and Caitlin Perrin (four kills) both had good serving.

Kelsey Kent (100 percent serving) and Hayley Gorton (setting) also did their part.

“Toutle Lake absolutely outplayed us,” Kalama coach Jeni O’Neil said. “They deserved to win.”

Erika Freeman had a good all-around night for the Chinooks, and Maggie Aschoff had four stuff blocks and five kills. K.C. Schmit posted 11 kills.

Indians fall in five sets

TOLEDO — Kelsey Stone pounded 12 kills and Hillary Roeder dished 26 assists, but Toledo still dropped a marathon five-set decision to Rochester 25-16, 16-25, 16-25, 25-16, 15-12 in an SWW 1A Evergreen Division volleyball match Tuesday night.

“It definitely could have been either team’s match,” Toledo coach Rene Ketchum said. “I thought we were going to put it away in the fourth game, but we got down and couldn’t dig out. I was hoping we wouldn’t go to the fifth game, but give Rochester credit. They worked hard.”

Ketchum also was pleased with the effort of her Indians (0-3, 0-1 league), who got seven kills from Holly Durham and solid front-row play from Nicole Ewers.

S. Bend nudges Naselle

NASELLE — South Bend handled Naselle 25-17, 25-15, 25-12 in Tuesday’s volleyball action. Emily Green had nine kills for the Comets (1-2), who host Adna on Thursday.

CROSS COUNTRY

Kelso sweeps league dual

Led by Elle Mustion, the Kelso girls finished 1-2-3-4 in a Greater St. Helens 4A League cross country dual meet, while Bryce Davis won the boys’ race and paced the Scotties to victory.

Kelso’s girls dominated Battle Ground 17-39 and Heritage 16-41. The Battle Ground girls beat Heritage 25-31.

The Kelso boys stopped BG 21-40 and Heritage 21-36, while BG edged Heritage 24-31.

Mustion won the girls race in 19:39, followed by teammates Kelly Swanson (19:49), Katie Wood (20:01) and Kayla Davis (20:16) in second, third and fourth place, respectively. Emma DeStromp finished eighth in 20:46.

“This was our best race, because we’re trying to develop a solid core of five,” Kelso coach Joe Stewart said. “Our first four have been really consistent. They are usually tightly bunched. Today was Emma’s best race.”

Danielle Hart placed 13th for Kelso at 21:33.

Davis won the boys’ race in 15:59. Garrett McDaniel was fourth in 16:43, Garrett Lane fifth in 16:48, Michael Patterson eighth in 16:58 and Steven Scott ninth in 16:59.

Stewart noted that the gap between Kelso’s first and fifth finishers was only one minute.

“That’s great team running,” he said. “We won because of that one-minute gap.”

Brian Bach was 12th (17:41) and Garrett Williams 13th (17:52) to round out the Scotties’ effort.

Rainier boys run strong

PORTLAND — Paced by strong runs from Dylan McFadden, Mark Russell and Scotty Brezeale, the Rainier boys cross country team placed second out of 15 teams at the Oregon Episcopal Invitational here Tuesday.

McFadden was 12th in 19:43, Russell 15th in 20:06 and Brezeale 16th in 20:08 for Rainier. Nathan Stecker was 24th (20:39) and Zack Lovell 26th (20:49).

The Rainier girls finished ninth out of 11 teams.

Kaylee Kotkins led the way with a 24:55, good for 16th place. Also for Rainier, Jessica Neumann was 68th (30:41), Jessica Anderson 73rd (31:29), Heather Anthony 74th (31:47) and Kasie Engstrom 81st (33:29).

Rainier competes at the Three Course Challenge in Seaside on Saturday.

TENNIS

Jacks lose tiebreaker

CAMAS — R.A. Long swept all three doubles matches against Camas here Tuesday, but dropped its three singles matches and lost the nonleague tennis match based on total sets won.

Camas won seven total sets to RAL’s six.

At first doubles, Johnny Nguyen and Taylor Woodruff won 6-3, 6-4. Ryan Cathcart and Carl Johnson breezed 6-0, 6-3 at second doubles, and Erikson Kolberg and Nick Schoen prevailed 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 at third doubles.

“I’m really impressed with the way Cathcart and Johnson have played this year,” RAL coach Rally Wallace said. “They’ve been very solid.”

The Lumberjacks’ doubles squads are each 4-0 this season.

SOCCER

Lumberjills get first win

ASTORIA — R.A. Long posted its first girls soccer victory of the season here Tuesday, striking almost immediately and letting its defense do the rest in a 1-0 win over Astoria in nonleague action.

Brianna Stanaway’s corner kick set up Rachel Zdilar’s goal 30 seconds into the match, and the Jills (1-1-1) held on from there.

“It was a big win, a great win,” RAL coach John Bates said. “The first half was pretty even. The second half, we pretty much dominated. It was a total team effort. We kind of put things together in this one.”

Alia Mauro had her second consecutive shutout in goal for the Jills, who played W.F. West to a 0-0 draw on Saturday. Sweeper Taylor Pitts was “outstanding” in that game, Bates said.

Rockets roll past Rainier

CASTLE ROCK — After spotting Rainier an early lead, Castle Rock scored the last five goals of the match and won 5-1 here Tuesday in nonleague soccer action.

Jennifer Hinkle gave the Columbians a 1-0 lead with her goal on a penalty kick eight minutes into the match, but Kendra Crayne set up Dara Rule for the CR equalizer before halftime.

Crayne had two goals, and Taviah’ Jenkins and Kayla Moore one apiece in the second half as the Rockets (3-0) opened up their attack.

Jenkins and ’keeper Kayla Schlect each had assists for the winners, who put 28 shots on goal in the match.

Brown sparks Kalama

KALAMA — Julia Brown’s corner kick deflected off a horde of her Kalama teammates and into the goal for the winning marker in the Chinooks’ 2-1 victory over Woodland here Tuesday in nonleague soccer action.

Tiffany Ruppaner tied it at 1-1 for the winners with her goal midway through the second half, as Kalama (1-2) picked up its first win of the season.

Following a scoreless first half, Jessica Pain put Woodland (1-1-1) on the board with a goal three minutes after halftime.

For Kalama, goalkeeper Jennifer Brown, midfielder Amanda Clizbe and defender Erica Hamby were standouts.

Paige Bosen “controlled the middle well and distributed the ball” for Woodland, Beavers coach Jeff Flanagan said.

Lassies settle for draw

WASHOUGAL — Kelso was definitely the aggressor, but had to settle for a 0-0 tie against Washougal on Tuesday in nonleague girls soccer action.

“We probably held possession 75 percent of the game, and we dominated play in the midfield,” Lassies coach John Fromdahl said. “We had chance after chance after chance to score, but we couldn’t finish.”

Kelso goalkeeper Kari Bonds was forced to make only a handful of saves against the Panthers, but did so with several nice slides.

“Kari came out of goal and got physical,” Fromdahl said.

The Lassies coach praised the play of Cassy Teig in the midfield, freshman Susan Dahl on defense and team captain Janet Dahl.

Kelso (1-0-2) plays Mark Morris on Thursday at Northlake Field.

Titans trip up Lady Devils

TACOMA — Karissa Haelle netted three goals, including the match-winner in the final minute, as Tacoma slipped past the Lower Columbia College Lady Devils 4-3 in NWAACC Western Division women’s soccer Tuesday.

Katie Smith tied the match at 1-1 for LCC in the 23rd minute, but two Haelle goals in the next 11 minutes pushed the Titans to a 3-1 lead at the break.

LCC’s Erin McIntosh kicked in a score in the 75th minute, and Stacie Wishard added a score in the 80th minute that tied the match at 3-3. But Haelle knocked in the match-winner nine minutes later.

“I’m proud of our kids for fighting their way back,” LCC coach Steve Taylor said. “Then we kind of ran out of gas at the end, but it is what it is.”

GOLF

Oliva medalist for RAL

Shane Oliva of R.A. Long fired a medalist round of 39, but it wasn’t enough as Ridgefield slipped past the Lumberjacks 213-223 in a Greater St. Helens 2A League boys golf dual at Mint Valley on Tuesday.

“Shane played real well. He started off slow, but came back strong,” RAL coach Dave Parks said.

Also for the Jacks (0-2 league), Grant Webb shot 42, Kip Lessard 44, and Kevin Sheehy and Drew Zandi had 49s.

Beavers, Hawks deadlock

WOODLAND — Woodland and Hockinson tied 190-190 at Lewis River Golf Course on Tuesday in a Greater St. Helens 2A League boys golf dual, with the Hawks’ Gerrit Chambers taking medalist honors with a 35.

Trey Udy carded a 36 to lead Woodland, and John-Michael Pilot (37), Keaton Burnett (40), Jordan Ditzler (38) and Dakota O’Malley (39) completed the scorecard for the Beavers (3-0-1).

SWIMMING

Clark carries Monarchs

CAMAS — Josie Clark won two individual events and swam a leg for a winning relay team to help Mark Morris top North County 107-58 here Tuesday in a Greater St. Helens 2A League dual meet.

Mark Morris fell 112-58 to Camas in a simultaneous nonleague dual, while R.A. Long lost 88-58 to North County and 131-32 to Camas.

Clark won the 100 butterfly with a state-qualifying time of 1:06.28, and qualified for district in winning the 200 free in 2:12.79.

Clark, Morgan Harris, Brittany Jewett and Ariel Johnson teamed to win the 400 free relay in 4:18.19.

Sarah Naglich shaved 20 seconds off her previous personal best in the 500 free, taking second in 7:08.45, a district qualifying time.

Kelsey Craft of R.A. Long won the 50 free in 26.98.

Storm floods Lassies

Skyview beat Kelso 118-58 and Toutle Lake 142-9 at Gaither Pool on Tuesday.

Kelso’s Shelby Metzger won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 32.44 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 1:07.7. Ashlee Bonahoom won the 1-meter diving in 178.95 and the 100 free in 1:00.42. Abby Klein took third in the 200 free and 100 backstroke.

TL’s standout was Ariel Pooley, who swam a second-place 29.36 in the 50 free.

Kelso def. R.A. Long 25-9, 15-25, 15-1 — Casey Birdsell served three aces, had two digs and one block for Kelso. Eilish Ledgerwood had three aces, three digs, two kills, and Brittney Sanders added one ace and three digs.

Prairie def. Mark Morris 25-22, 22-25, 15-11 — MM’s Madeline Randolph and Mikayla Brown had five digs each, and Angelica Kent added nine kills and three blocks.

Toutle Lake def. Kalama 25-17, 25-15, 16-14 — Payton Hoff played well in the front row for the Ducks.

Soccer

R.A. Long 4, Astoria 0 — Valerie Peerboom had two goals, and Sam Lee and Mykala Newt added one apiece. It was a good overall team effort for R.A. Long.

Kelso 1, Washougal 1 — Taylor McCormick scored Kelso’s goal on an assist from Rochelle Skreen.

Tennis

R.A. Long 3, Camas 3 — Tyler VonDracek won a singles match 8-4 for RAL. Josh Johnson and Sean Sheppard won 9-8, and Thomas Pitts and Anton Stalick won 8-2 at doubles.

Football

Kelso 26, Prairie 21 — For Kelso, offensive standouts were Riley Miller and Steven Chavez, and Kevin Scrivner and James Gummell each had interceptions.

Kelso def. R.A. Long 25-16, 25-14, 15-4 — Defensive standouts for the Lassies were Mykal Baron and Ashlee Elabert, while offensive standouts included Talisa Swanson (blocks) and Shayanne Olivas (kills). Natasha Marith (serving) and Hana Baron (all-around) also played well.

Prairie def. Mark Morris 25-16, 25-14, 15-9 — Mark Morris had good passing from Jessika Kersting, four kills from Stormmie Tackett and all-around good hustle from Jasmine Grothen.
