A good Samaritan trying to help a driver whose car hit an elk was killed late Monday night about two miles west of Toledo.
Preston C. Newby, 24, of Tualatin, Ore., was on a cell phone calling 911 about the accident when another vehicle swerved around the dead elk, striking Newby, who died at the scene, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Traffic on Interstate 5 was tied up for three hours while troopers investigated.
The accident happened when Andrea L. Glandon, 16, of Mansfield, Wash., struck an elk with her northbound 2000 Kia Sephia at around 11:45 p.m. at milepost 62.2.
Newby stopped to help.
Claudia R. Fisher, 24, of Yelm, driving a 2002 Subaru Legacy, swerved to miss the dead elk and the disabled car but struck Newby on the inside shoulder of the freeway, according to a WSP news release.
Glandon was treated at Centralia Providence Hospital for cuts to her face and released. Fisher was not injured.
Both Glandon's and Fisher's cars were destroyed. The news release does not mention the type of car Newby was driving.
Glandon's passenger, Christa B. Glandon, 53, of Mansfield, and Fisher's passenger, Tyler T. Krumland, 25, of Olympia, were not injured.
No one is being charged, the news release said.

Now, being a pastor's wife, she is very positive and all and I know her faith is her rock... even so, I just can't imagine the heartache that she must feel.
He was only 25 and dedicated his life to helping youth find Christ.
I pray for his wife and family in this hard time...... "
