Drunk. High. Wasted. Hammered, smashed, trashed. Go beyond the buzz to tell us for real how getting drunk and high changes people, families and communities.

How is it tied to our health, our feelings, our good times?

Why do some young people drink, smoke dope and pop pills? Why do some avoid drugs and alcohol? Why is getting drunk and high so popular on college campuses?

The Cowlitz Substance Abuse Coalition and The Daily News invite young adults ages 16 to 22 to answer these or other questions about drugs and alcohol in an essay of 1,500 words or fewer.

Be true to what you have experienced. Tell us real stories. Help the community start a conversation.

Winning essays will be awarded cash-equivalent prizes and be printed in The Daily News.

To enter “Through My Eyes:”

1. Write an essay, up to 1,500 words, about how drugs and alcohol affect your life or the community. Typed essays are preferred. If writing your essay, please use a pen.

2. On the back of the essay OR on a separate sheet of paper, write your name, age, a phone number where you can be reached and the county you live in or are from (Cowlitz, Wahkiakum, Pacific, Columbia and Lewis counties only, please).

Judges will NOT see your name, and we will not use your information for anything else except to identify winners.

3. By Oct. 10, 2008, e-mail, drop off or send your essay to “Through My Eyes,” c/o The Daily News, 770 11th Ave., P.O. Box 189, Longview WA 98632, czimmerman@tdn.com.

" As far as the drinking goes... Children learn by example. Adults lead by example. Children these days grow up thinking that the only way to have fun is if alcohol is included. Every thing that adults do for recreation and fun includes alcohol. For example... Motorcycle races = alcohol is consumed by adult spectators. The same with car races. The same with concerts. I even witnessed I don't know how many people drinking alcohol at the lake this 4th of July. Superbowl parties, Halloween parties, 4th of July parties, Birthday parties, New Years parties. All of them the adults are having fun and the kids link that fun to their consumption of alcohol. It seems that on almost every street corner in Longview/Kelso there is a tavern, or bar, or lounge, or casino and when kids walk by they hear the adults inside whooping it up having a good time. There is even countless commercials on TV for beer and booze showing adults having fun while trying to get you to buy their products. What kind of message does all of this send to kids? "
