FERC may issue LNG project approval next week

A federal panel may decide next week whether to issue a license for NorthernStar Natural Gas Inc.’s Columbia River liquefied natural gas terminal.

The five-member Federal Energy Regulation Commission said Friday it will discuss the terminal during its meeting Thursday.

Houston-based NorthernStar wants to build the $600 million terminal at Bradwood Landing and bring LNG tankers 38 miles up the Columbia River. The company also wants to run a 36-mile pipeline across Clatsop, Columbia and Cowlitz counties to ship the vaporized gas to markets.

FERC issued a final environmental impact statement in June, saying the terminal posed “limited” environmental impacts to the region.

Even if FERC approves the license, NorthernStar still must secure several state and federal approvals, including clean air and water permits as well as a Coastal Zone Management Act certificate.

State regulators in Oregon and Washington have accused FERC of glossing over key questions about the project, including whether it would be safe, whether the gas is needed and whether it would cause more environmental damage than FERC has acknowledged.

The state agencies, as well as many federal lawmakers, have asked FERC to delay its decision until those questions are resolved.

FERC’s meeting comes two days after Clatsop County voters are expected to vote on a referendum on the project, brought by the project’s opponents, that could overturn a provision of the Clatsop County commissioners’ approval of the project.

Even as NorthernStar has published advertisements and polled voters about the referendum, the company has said the vote will have no impact on plans for the terminal.

" It is so OBVIOUS that the POLITICAL CRONIES seated at FERC are ramming this through because they know they're going to loose the election. They want this pipeline come hell or high water and they will trample anyone who gets in their way.

Kind of like they did to the people of Iraq when they wanted their OIL.

vote them all out. "

" Wow! The newest "In Business for the Lower Columbia" has a graph on page 18 that clearly shows natural gas prices being influenced by crude oil. We have countries quoted in the news this past week that are considering reducing crude oil production to drive up the cost per barrell. Add to the mix a LNG RECEIVING terminal in the Gulf of Texas that has been granted permission to EXPORT the LNG they receive so they can make a larger profit than they would get here in the US and we're suppose to welcome NorthernStar and their foreign fuel when our congress (I don't care who is in control)ties our hands for domestic production and shoves a pipeline up my &%% taking my property away from me and endangering my life. For what? Clean out congress - all of them - and let's return the power to the people. Maybe it's time politics was no longer a "career". "

" Just keep voting Republican you bunch of ignorant suckers. Does anybody think President Clinton, Gore or Kerry would pull this crap on the people of the northwest? "

" Yes, Cheney 119, they would. After, how did we get into this current situation of dependency on foreign fuels - environmental hands tying by some of those you list. "

" My, oh my, I find myself in complete agreement with Cheney 119 (man, I wish you would change that name!)The writing is on the wall: we are going to see this travesty granted a "conditional permit". What they don't tell you is when that happens, FERC becomes an advocate for the applicant, as if they weren't already. So kiss your salmon runs good-bye, and kiss your shipping business good-bye, as well as your tourist trade. Oh, did I forget? Kiss your @*% good-bye if there is an accident of any kind, be it tanker, facility or pipeline. But FERC doesn't care; they will "let the market decide." "

" I am not sure but I think someone with an encylopedic memory told me that it was after all a Democrat who helped squeeze that 2005 energy bill through. This situation is a big mess that can be laid at the feet of both parties. As a conservative I am damn fed up with what my party has done, and I hope there are some liberals out there who feel the same about some of their "influencial" legislators. The point is that this might be fERC's last gasp before losing total power and it should be a lesson to all of us that we , now more than ever, need to be, or stay envolved in this democratic proccess and we need to encourage bi-partison sanity! "

" Lets here it - say outloud - Those who vote republican LOVE LNG! So stop pretending you dont want LNG. If you dont want LNG then get a president who does not want LNG and that my children is a democrat. "

Did no not understand what I just said? Ask any Republian whose going to lose their land due to eminent domain and you will find out differently. What we need is to STOP catagorizing every single voter by their coice of a party. My best friend is a Democrat, I am a Republican. We both agree on more than we disagree on when it comes to most things and I would never call her "an ingorant sucker" and anyone else who did in my hearing would be picking themselves up off the ground. The last two decades has been a mess on both sides of the isle and this LNG issue happens to be a bipartison issue. A BIPARTISON ISSUE! But the Powers that be love it when they can split us up as Americans. And this Republican is having a hard time deciding who to vote for for our governor in this next election. I may just vote for my best friend! "
