Prep Roundup: LeMonds caps Lassies' win over Beavers

WOODLAND — Kelso’s smallest player delivered the biggest play for the Lassies, as 5-foot Carley LeMonds’ hit and kill sealed a 3-2 victory over Woodland in nonleague volleyball on Thursday.

Kelso won the first two games 25-22 and 26-24, Woodland rallied back to tie the match following 25-20 and 25-20 wins, and Kelso put together the last five points in the final game to win 15-7.

“I’m proud of the team and how well they played together,” Kelso coach Holly Budge said. “Woodland is a tough team defensively, but we took care of business and stuck to our game plan.”

Kelso’s Crystal Nyman had a tough jump-serve that amassed eight aces, and Jessica Warthen handed out 16 assists and served seven points. Jenna DeRosier had 10 kills and six blocks, and Andrea DeRosier chipped in seven kills and seven points.

Emily Holt was Woodland’s kill leader with nine. Kaitlyn Moses had seven kills, and Moses and Taylor Blanchard had 12 digs apiece. Staci McLendon had six kills and served 19-of-20 with four aces, and Kayla Christensen went 22-of-23 fifth another four ace serves.

Christensen also had 18 assists and Rikki Hall had nine.

Kelso (1-1) entertains R.A. Long on Tuesday, and Woodland (1-1) hosts Battle Ground next Thursday.

MM pounds Plainsmen

VANCOUVER — Rebecca Haight hammered 21 kills and made 13 digs, and Tara Anderson was a solid all-around contributor as Mark Morris swept Evergreen 25-20, 25-23, 25-12 in nonleague volleyball Thursday .

“We were a little sluggish in the first two games,” MM coach Lisa Verage said. “We had to play from behind because they (the Plainsmen) led up to 19 points in both games. We were very focused in the third game, by pushing through the points and playing strong.”

Anderson served 14 points including three aces, and had four stuff blocks. Danielle Gilchrist served seven points and dished 31 assists, Shawna Smith served seven points and made eight digs, and Kinzi Williams chipped in five kills for MM (2-0).

Columbians come back

BANKS, Ore. — Rainier showed the fatigue that comes with playing its third match of the week in the early going against Banks here Thursday, but roared back for a win that kept it undefeated.

“We were out of steam when we started, but we came back,” Rainier coach Laurie Womack said of the 22-25, 14-25, 25-22, 25-20, 15-13 victory. “Thank goodness.”

Raeanne Hanks had 12 kills and Niki Wagner nine for the Columbians (4-0), and Cassie Hanks handed out 30 assists and smacked a pair of kills.

Mollee Schwegler added six kills, Amanda Schwegler three kills, Denae Hunter had two kills and was a serving standout, and Zascia Walker sparked the winners on defense.

On Wednesday, Raeanne Hanks notched 14 kills, three blocks and served three aces as Rainier rolled to a 22-25, 27-25, 25-17, 25-21 victory over Kalama in nonleague action. Also for Rainier, Cassie Hanks had 32 assists, Wagner hammered 12 kills and Mollee Schwegler added seven.

Napavine nudges Indians

NAPAVINE — Toledo was strong with nine kills in the first game, but the Indians’ offense disappeared as they dropped a 3-1 decision to Napavine in nonleague volleyball Thursday.

Toledo won the opener 25-22, but dropped the next three games 25-7, 25-12, 25-8.

“We couldn’t get our serve receive going,” Toledo coach Rene Ketchum said. “We did some good things, but we’re also trying to figure other things out.”

Kelsey Stone had eight kills and Nicole Ewers three to lead Toledo. Sarah Jordan was a standout in digs, and Hilary Roeder served 100 percent.

Comets fizzle on road

MOSSYROCK — Naselle started strong but fizzled down the stretch of a 26-24, 25-16, 25-11 loss to Mossyrock here Thursday in nonleague volleyball action.

Emily Green had seven kills and solid all-around net play for the Comets (1-1), and Orianne Condon was a defensive standout.

“We had a really awesome first game, but we fell just short and couldn’t get the momentum back,” Naselle coach Kim Eaton said. “We struggled with our serving.”

The Comets host South Bend on Tuesday.

Eagles stumble against White Pass

White Pass sneaked past Three Rivers Christian 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-13 at Zion Christian Center on Thursday in a nonleague volleyball match.

Myriah Dombrowsky (26 digs, nine kills, 32 assists, five aces), Emily Claunch (22 digs), Nikki Barnwell (14 digs, 10 kills) and Leah Morrison (six digs, 17 kills, six blocks) led the Eagles (0-1).

BOYS TENNIS

Jacks romp by Fort

R.A. Long swept all five matches against Fort Vancouver in a nonleague tennis blowout on Thursday.

The Lumberjacks (2-0) won each match in straight sets, dropping just eight games out of 58, combined.

Josh Kim handled first singles 6-2, 6-0 and Jonathan Haukaas breezed 6-1, 6-1 at second singles. In doubles play, Johnny Nguyen and Taylor Woodruff won 6-1, 6-1, Ryan Cathcart and Carl Johnson prevailed 6-1, 6-1, and Erikson Kolberg and Nick Schoen breezed 6-0, 6-0 at first, second and third doubles, respectively.

Monarchs maul Tigers

CENTRALIA — Jeff Koss won his third singles match 6-0, 6-0 as Mark Morris rolled to a 6-0 victory over the Centralia Tigers in nonleague boys tennis on Thursday.

Also winning for MM (2-0) were Willie Brenc in first singles (3-6, 6-2, 6-0) and Kevin Jones at second singles (6-0, 6-3). Doubles winners were Colin Luh and Jarad Houten (6-3, 6-2), Kelly Gilchrist and Ryan Dawkins (6-1, 6-0), and Tyler Stewart and Krammer Rapp (6-1, 6-0).

GIRLS SWIMMING

Monarchs win a pair

Mark Morris hosted the Greater St. Helens League Relays at Dick Mealy Memorial Pool on Thursday. No team scores were kept in the 11-school event.

The Monarchs won the 200-yard freshman/sophomore freestyle relay in 2 minutes, 14.24 seconds with Noresa Wisdom, Emma Laufer, Rebekah Kitchens and Mikayla Bell.

Kenzie Jones, Narissa Wolf, Allyson Swanstrom and Lara Mortimer took the 200 junior varsity freestyle relay in 2:14.24.

Camas and North County visit MM on Tuesday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Thunder bests Monarchs

Mark Morris hosted Class 4A Mountain View at Northlake Field in nonleague soccer action Thursday and fell to the Thunder 2-1.

The Thunder scored first, and Alyssa Marre of the Monarchs made it 1-1 on a penalty kick. Mountain View regained the lead for good just before the half.

Caitlin Ingman played well for MM at goalkeeper, and Courtney Teeters, Porsche Yates and Molly Holway played well offensively for the Monarchs (0-1-1), who host Kelso next Thursday.

Beavers thrash Wildcats

LA CENTER — Woodland claimed its first soccer win of the year with a 2-1 nonleague defeat of La Center on Thursday.

La Center scored on a corner kick in the 20th minute, but Woodland answered immediately when Marva Warndahl found the net off an assist from Rachelle Olson. Midway through the second half, Daissy Toledo kicked in the winning goal, again with help from Olson. As a replacement goalkeeper, senior Kacey LeFranq played well.

“Jerika Burton showed good leadership settling down a young defense,” Woodland coach Jeff Flanagan said. “They were much better with her organizing things in the back.”

Woodland (1-0-1) visits Kalama next Tuesday.

Rockets slip by Kalama

CASTLE ROCK — Castle Rock struck twice in the first 24 minutes, and the Rockets played solid defense in holding off Kalama 2-1 in SWW 1A League Trico Division girls soccer on Thursday.

“I can’t say enough about these girls because they played their hearts out,” CR coach Rick Schlecht said. “They’ve really pulled together as a team and are communicating very well.”

Mikey Williamson staked CR to a 1-0 lead in the third minute, and Taviah’ Jenkins scored in the 24th minute for a 2-0 lead.

Kayla Schlecht was a defensive standout with 15 saves, and other CR standouts included Jessica Faul on defense and center-midfielder Lindsay Melton.

Julia Brown netted Kalama’s goal on a breakaway midway through the second half.

CR (2-0) entertains Rainier on Tuesday. Kalama is now 0-2, in 0-1 league.

CROSS COUNTRY

Pugh paces Wahkiakum

CASTLE ROCK — White Pass ran away with the girls’ race and Montesano was tops in the boys during a 10-team nonleague cross country meet Thursday.

Montesano easily out-distanced Toledo 65-93 to win the boys’ race, followed by Wahkiakum (96), Woodland (102), Castle Rock (133) and Onalaska (145).

Bradley Pugh led the Wahkiakum boys with a fifth-place finish in 19:23, followed by Chris Hokanen (sixth, 19:23), Kevin O’Connor (26th, 21:27), Colin Riley (29th, 21:44) and Connar Riley (32nd, 22:39).

Woodland’s Tyler King finished ninth place in 19:56, followed by Isiah Hurn (10th, 19:59), Nick Watts (11th, 20:00), Luke Donald (30th, 21:45) and Derrik Seymour (42nd, 23:58).

Loren Kennington and Travis Patrick paced CR in 14th and 15th places in 20:30 and 20:31, respectively. Kaj Holten was 20th in 21:08, Tyler Eccles finished 35th in 22:51 and Hunter Reed placed 49th in 25:19.

White Pass won the girls’ race with 37 points, followed by Onalaska (78), Montesano (80), Mossyrock (83) and Woodland (135).

Michelle Kooiman led Woodland in fifth place at 24:11, followed by Beverly Courtway (20th, 29:30), Emylia Denis (35th, 35:07), Chelsea Anderson (37th, 35:24) and Leah Kooiman (38th, 35:27).

Wahkiakum ran incomplete in the girls’ race. Joreigh McEntire finished in 28:04, followed by Amanda Collier (32:06) and Avery Gribskov (35:23).

Castle Rock’s Samantha Moore finished seventh in 26:16, Kelci Holten finished in 32:44 and Becca Woeller completed the race in 34:52.

Ulbricht sparks Fish

TENINO — Cameo Ulbricht of Ilwaco dominated the junior/senior girls’ race at the Gordy Robinson Cross Country Invitational here Thursday, winning by more than 30 seconds.

Team scores were not kept at the nine-team event, but Ulbricht (12:34) and teammate Kate Denton (eighth, 15:54) led an impressive display by the Fishermen girls.

For the Ilwaco boys in the junior/senior race, Stephen Berglund was fifth in 10:25 and Evin Laplatney sixth in 10:40.

In the freshman/sophomore boys’ race, Mitchell Mortenson was fifth (10:58) and Tanner Weider sixth (10:59).

Mark Morris 1, Centralia 0 — Ethan Winters won his singles match 8-3.

R.A. Long 2, Fort Vancouver 0 — Tyler VonDracek won 8-2 and Nick Bartolus 8-1 in singles matches for RAL.

Volleyball

Mark Morris def. Evergreen 25-18, 25-15, 15-12 ­— Standouts for MM were Bonney Carter (passing, four service aces) and Madeline Randolph (six digs, five aces).

Woodland def. Kelso 22-25, 25-16, 16-14 — Kelso’s top players were Jessica Fischer (seven assists, two digs, six service points), Breanna Sanders (two digs, four service points) and Brittney Sanders (two kills, three digs, 11 service points).

Three Rivers Christian def. White Pass 26-28, 25-20, 15-7 — For TRC, Ashley Hawley was an all-around standout and Lane Backstrom played strong defensively.

Mark Morris 5, Mountain View 0 — Kelley Bairel had two goals for MM. Jenn Dunn, Jordie Rukkila and Chelsea Wright added one goal apiece. Bairel, Rukkila, Christie Kirkpatrick and Amanda Thomas each had an assist.

Freshman report

Football

Kelso 14, Prairie 14 (tie) — Slate Miller scored a touchdown and ran in a two-point conversion for the Scots. Josh Shoemaker ran back a kickoff 70 yards for a TD in the fourth quarter, and Miller’s conversion run tied it. Mitchel Grasser had an interception for Kelso, and other defensive standouts included Johnathan Gustin and Quinn Cutler.

Mark Morris 35, Centralia 28 — Nikko Asbell had 150 all-purpose yards, scored on runs of 55 and 35 yards, and hauled in a 65-yard scoring pass from Seth Pederson. Jacob Hamlik scored on a 12-yard run, Pederson had a 15-yard TD run and Jason Gibb chipped in a safety.

Tennis

R.A. Long vs. Fort Vancouver — Anton Stalick and Thomas Pitts won 6-4 in a doubles match for RAL.

Volleyball

Mark Morris def. Evergreen 25-9, 25-15, 15-8 — Top players for MM (2-0) included Miranda Lecker (six assists), Ashley Shippers (12 points, including three aces) and Madie Alwine (all-around).
