CR goes 5-1 at jamboree

Castle Rock won five of six games, and Kalama went 2-4 at a seven-team volleyball jamboree hosted by Mark Morris at Ted M. Natt Court on Monday.

CR topped Kelso, Kalama, Camas, Toutle Lake and R.A. Long in one-game matches, but fell to Mark Morris 25-23. Standouts for the Rockets included freshman Megan Moore (serving and defense), and seniors Milly Manring (15 kills) and Heather Shulke (28 assists, 13 kills).

"Heather took charge of the team in a positive way and showed strong senior leadership," CR coach Jeana Bayes said. "We played beautifully, and I'm very proud of my players."

Kalama opened with a 25-15 loss to Castle Rock, rallied to beat RAL 26-24, lost to Kelso (25-21), Camas (25-19) and MM (25-17) before stopping TL 25-10.

"We tried a lot of different lineups to find the best combinations," Kalama coach Jeni O'Neil said. "The girls have a lot of heart and skills, but it's a matter of putting it all together. When we do that, the season will be successful."

Lassies, Wildcats draw

LA CENTER — Kelso and La Center battled to a 1-1 girls soccer tie on Tuesday, with freshman Leilani Barker scoring the Lassies' goal.

The Wildcats got on the scoreboard with a corner kick in the first 10 minutes of the game, but from then on, Kelso went on the attack with more than double La Center's scoring chances. Midfielder Payton Wheeler had a strong game and created several opportunities herself.

Kelso had two goals called back before Barker finally scored unassisted in the 60th minute. Lassie goalkeeper Kari Bonds then stepped up and made two big saves to keep the game even, with defensive help from Lindsey Gummel and Jennifer Hicks.

"It was good to see the girls come back in the second half after trailing 2-0 in the first half," Woodland coach Jeff Flanagan said. "They played well in the first, but things didn't seem to come together."

Olson scored off assists from Kelsey Melnick and Daissy Toledo, and Jessica Pain added an unassisted goal for her first varsity score.

CC SOCCER

Tritons double-up LCC

Two second-half goals by Edmonds lifted the Tritons to a 2-1 victory over Lower Columbia College in nonleague women's soccer at Northlake Field on Tuesday.

"We looked good in the first half with a lot of shots on goal that bounced off the crossbar and the upright," LCC coach Steve Taylor said. "The girls don't realize at this level you have to play solid soccer for an entire 90 minutes."

Zury Romero staked LCC to a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute off an assist from Kendall Rapp. Allison Grimm netted second-half goals in the 68th and 78th minutes off assists from Katelyn Giampaolo for the Tritons.

"Their energy level picked up after they scored their first goal," Taylor said of the Tritons. "We won't get rolled by any team this season, but we also aren't going to blow anyone out."

LCC (1-3, 0-1 league) visits Highline for an NWAACC Western Division matchup Thursday.
