Len Vartek of Longview Country Club used his local links knowledge to fire an even-par 70 and tie Matt Newcombe from Heron Lakes for the first-round lead Saturday in the inaugural Pacific Tech Invitational golf tournament at LVCC.
Vartek and Newcombe wil tee it up in the final group this morning, along with former Mark Morris High School and current Oregon State University golfer Clayton Moe of Mint Valley, who shot 71 on Saturday.
Rounding out the final foursome will be John Davenport, who works on the grounds crew at LVCC. Davenport also shot 71.
“We couldn’t be happier with the turnout. We had 98 golfers register, and a number of them are very good players,” said LVCC head pro Lance Satcher, one of the organizers of the tourney.
Three players shot 73 in the first round, including former MM standout Jordan Burns, LVCC mainstay Steve Lervik and Jay Thompson. Defending champion Chris Holway, who won last year’s event when it was called the Cowlitz Bank Invitational, opened with a 74. Holway, a former R.A. Long High School state qualifier, is a member of the University of Oregon golf team.
Jesse Ehrlich, the 2006 champ, also shot 74, along with Grayson Kartsen.
Casey Winters (Toledo grad) and Matt Hartley (R.A. Long) each shot 75.
