CASTLE ROCK — Chris Tinney had a monster night for Castle Rock, rushing 16 times for 210 yards and three touchdowns as the Rockets rolled over Rochester 46-25 in the nonleague football opener for both teams Friday night.

“Chris had a career night,” CR coach Art Walsh said. “We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season. We blocked a punt on the first series and pushed it down for a score. Our running game was running on all cylinders, and our offensive line did a great job.”

Tinney scored on runs of 1 and 7 yards in the first quarter, and Zack Gehring hauled in a 66-yard scoring pass from Kyle Karnofski as the Rockets grabbed a 20-7 lead in the first quarter.

Gehring, who caught three passes for 113 yards, also caught an 8-yard scoring toss early in the second quarter. Tinney added a 55-yard scoring romp, and Jed Lomer scored on a 5-yard run as the Rockets took a 40-7 halftime lead.

Tinney rounded out CR’s scoring in the third quarter with an 80-yard kickoff return.

Karnofski completed 3-of-4 passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Rochester’s Tyler McLemore scored on a pair of 66-yard runs, and Jerry Manusco scored twice in the second half on scampers of 3 and 26 yards.

Castle Rock visits Montesano next Friday.

Mules shut out Comets in KM Mountain matchup

CATHLAMET — A Naselle special-teams miscue paved the way for Wahkiakum’s 13-0 victory in the KM Mountain Trophy game Friday. It was the nonleague season opener for both squads.

The Comets fumbled the opening kickoff, and Wahkiakum took posession on the Naselle 32-yard line. A minute-and-a-half into the game, Luke Thomason punched in the first Mules TD of the year on an 8-yard run.

The defenses dominated throughout the second and third quarters. With good play from Alan Erickson and Mike Shirley, the Comets held off Wahkiakum on the 2-yard line just before the half. Their defensive standout was Nathan Carlson, with several good stops including two sacks and a tipped pass.

Naselle’s generosity continued to make things easy for the Mules. Joel Fudge picked off a pass and Jordan Fritsch recovered two fumbles. Tyson Bain and Ben Doumit played well on the defensive line, and Zach Schneider and Blake Anderson in the secondary also had big roles in maintaining the shutout.

“We had a couple scoring chances, but we just couldn’t overcome turnovers — seven of them,” Naselle coach Jeff Eaton said.

In the fourth quarter, Fudge scored the back-breaker on a 1-yard quarterback sneak. Running back Bryce McClain led the Mules’ attack with 22 carries for 204 yards. Austin Burkhalter of Naselle completed 11-for-25 passes for 107 yards and one interception.

“It was a good, hard-fought KM Mountain game,” Wahkiakum coach Eric Hansen said.

The Mules open Central 2B League play at home against Morton next Friday, and Naselle hosts Warrenton, Ore.

Toutle clobbers Raymond 42-0 in its season opener

CASTLE ROCK — Jeff Campbell ran for three touchdowns, and the Toutle Lake defense smothered Raymond to help the Ducks romp to a 42-0 victory here Friday in a nonleague football game.

“We did well,” TL coach Scott Grabenhorst said. “This is a good start.”

Campbell scored three times in the first half and had 108 yards rushing on just 11 carries. Boomer Nash added a touchdown and 81 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Tyler Elam had a 9-yard touchdown run in the first half as the Ducks built a 28-0 halftime lead, and Brandon Orth added a TD run in the fourth quarter.

“It was a nice opener, because we got our second- and third-string kids in and everybody got some experience,” Grabenhorst said.

Elam had three fumble recoveries, and Derek Berezo and Chris Foster combined to block a Raymond punt.

Nash, Campbell and Josh Fias led an impressive defensive surge that limited the visitors to 62 yards rushing and 34 yards passing.

Toutle visits Willapa Valley next Friday.

Tigers ride Marioni, Cruz to 36-25 win over Willamina

CLATSKANIE — Willamina fought hard, but Clatskanie’s Trevor Marioni and Jeron Cruz found the end zone too many times, helping the Tigers snatch a 36-25 nonleague win Friday night.

Marioni touched the ball seven times for 35 yards, but he was an efficient scorer, reaching the end zone twice in the first quarter on runs of 8 and 4 yards. Cruz caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from K.C. Taylor before the half.

Willamina held its hosts scoreless in the third quarter and claimed a 25-22 lead, but Cruz retook control with a 22-yard TD run. Jessie Oblack had the final score of the game on a 9-yard run.

“The boys, they did a good job of coming back,” Clatskanie coach Tim Strong said. “They made some early mistakes, but they played really well to finish up for a win.”

Taylor threw five passes and completed three of them for 70 yards, and Oblack gained 86 yards on 16 carries and had a good game at linebacker. Nathan Dugan was a standout defensive lineman, and Tyler Hulegaard, Vince Heidman and Taylor all intercepted passes for the Tigers (1-1).

Ayers reels in Fishermen as Winlock holds on for win

ILWACO — Mike Ayers toted the ball 27 times for 192 yards and four touchdowns for Winlock, and the Cardinals put together two scoring drives in the final eight minutes to pull away from Ilwaco 28-27 in the nonleague opener for both teams Friday.

Winlock’s victory snapped a 10-game losing skid, stretching back to the 2007 season opener.

“He was a load for us, and we also had poor tackling to boot,” Ilwaco coach Kevin McNulty said of Ayers. “We led 27-15 with eight minutes left when they (the Cardinals) found a way to swing the momentum in their direction.”

Ayers scored the game-winning touchdown on a 1-yard plunge with 48 seconds left.

“We were in a position to win the game, but we didn’t step on them when we had a chance,” McNulty added. “You have to give them (the Cardinals) a lot of credit for hanging around.”

Ilwaco carried the ball 40 times for 250 yards, compared to 45 rushes for 246 yards for the Cardinals.

Trevor Couch toted the ball 12 times for 136 yards for the Fishermen.

On Friday, Ilwaco visits South Bend, and Winlock entertains Rainier, Wash.

Banks star Linehan shreds Rainier in 34-22 victory

BANKS, Ore. — Rainier’s defense proved to be no match for Banks quarterback Gabe Linehan, who completed 19-of-23 passes for 235 yards as the Braves claimed a 34-22 victory over the Columbians in a nonleague football game Friday.

“They couldn’t run against us, but Linehan was definitely on,” Rainier coach Thor Ware said. “He’s the real deal, and he’s already given a verbal commitment to Boise State for next season.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Rainier grabbed an 8-6 lead on a Dalton Earlywine kickoff return following a scoring toss by Linehan. The Braves later scored in the second quarter for a 14-8 halftime lead, but Earlywine lifted Rainier to a 14-14 tie on a 44-yard run on the opening drive of the second half.

Banks scored on an 11-yard run late in the third quarter, and Linehan completed a 25-yard scoring strike early in the fourth quarter for a 27-14 lead. Andrew Allen scored for the Columbians later in the period on a 7-yard scamper, but the Braves added an insurance score with a 1-yard plunge on the final play of the game after Allen tossed an interception.

“We played well, but had a tough time defending against Linehan’s passes,” Ware said. “He was hitting his out passes and getting over our zone. We won the battle on the offensive and defensive lines, but we just couldn’t get it done otherwise.”

Allen toted the ball 23 times for 122 yards, and Earlywine added 10 touches for 104.

Rainier entertains Portland Christian next Friday.
