Custom cars from across the region will be on display on the Long Beach Peninsula this weekend for the annual Rod Run to the End of the World.
The event is sponsored by the Beach Baron Car Club, formed in the 1950s by a bunch of local car fans who owned flat-head Fords, small-block Chevys and a few Oldsmobile-powered hot rods, according to the club’s Web page.
The event has its origin in the early 1960s and has evolved into an extravaganza that attracts more than 1,000 cars and 6,000 to 8,000 people a year.
The event kicks off Friday and continues through Sunday. Cars must be 1973 or older to be admitted to the show. Registration fee is $50. Registration and T-shirt booths will be open on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Friday’s big event is the slow drag race from 4 p.m. until dark in Ilwaco. Hot Rods will line up on Waterfront Way at the Port of Ilwaco to compete in a coasting competition. Cars have about 15 feet to accelerate and then coast for 100 feet. To win, a car must cross the finish line and stop closest to the line.
Saturday’s events include the show and shine, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., live music and vendors. All trophy judging will take place Saturday at the Beach Barons field along Sandridge Road. Cars will continue to be on display Sunday. Sunday, there’s a Treasure Hunt, music and vendors, and show participants will also enjoy a continental breakfast and seafood picnic. Trophies are presented at 2 p.m. Sunday.
