Cassie Koering was strong at the net and Emily Damschen was solid all-around, but the Lower Columbia College Lady Devils dropped a 23-25, 15-25, 25-21, 19-25 decision to Chemeketa in nonleague volleyball in Truman Myklebust Gym on Tuesday.

LCC (1-1) entertains Mount Hood at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

“We had a OK match but we didn’t do the things we’ve worked on in practice,” LCC coach Marcy Gilchrist said. “We started playing safe, and part of that is our youth.”

LCC dropped the first game after missing five serves, including the game-winner for the Storm.

“I threw these girls to the wolves on purpose by scheduling Chemeketa, Mount Hood and Linn-Benton during the preseason so they could face the toughest competition in the conference,” Gilchrist said. “We have the ability to compete with these teams, but sometimes the girls don’t seem to have the confidence to follow through with the mission.”

Koering, a freshman middle blocker from Woodland, tallied 14 kills and had three blocks. Damschen, a sophomore from Castle Rock, had 10 kills and served three aces.

Kacie DeRosier handed out 36 assists and made three blocks, Denali Preston made 17 digs and Rachael Fair added 12.

Gilchrist also praised the attacking of Sara Jespersen, Koering and Damschen, DeRosier’s handling of the offense, and the play of Preston and Fair on defense.
