The Palin family of Longview was bursting its buttons Friday. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Sen. John McCain’s surprise choice as his vice presidential running mate, is married to the nephew of Ted Palin, a well-known retired Longview businessman.

“Honest to God, I’m so proud of her. She’s the most likeable person,” said Ted Palin, 79, speaking almost breathlessly by cell phone Friday morning.

He said neither her nor most other members of the close-knit Palin family knew before this morning that McCain, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, had tapped the Alaska governor.

“In the morning I always turn on Fox News. I said, ‘My God! There’s Sarah!’ I couldn’t believe it. I thought (former Massachusetts governor Mitt) Romney was the guy. They have kept this a tremendous secret. Even her dad found out on Fox this morning,” Palin said.

Palin’s brother, Jim Palin of Wasilla, Alaska, is the father of Todd Palin, who is married to the Sarah Palin. Alaska’s first couple has five children, the youngest of whom was born in April with Down syndrome.

Ted Palin said he and his wife, Ruby, hope to see their famous relative in Fairbanks, Alaska, in September. They will attend a Sept. 11 farewell picnic for the governor’s son Tracker, whose Stryker brigade is due to deploy to Iraq the next day. It’s now uncertain whether Sarah Palin will be able to attend because of the need to campaign.

“I know it would break her heart” if she can’t attend, Ted Palin said.

Palin formerly ran the Lakeside Industries asphalt plant in Longview. He said today’s announcement coincided with the governor’s 20th wedding anniversary, this week’s anniversary of women’s suffrage and John McCain’s 72nd birthday, also Friday.

Several times, Palin said Sarah Palin is a “nice” and “gracious” person who, however, “won’t be pushed around. When she goes up against (Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe) Biden, she won’t be pushed around. She is a strong lady.”

Palin said he thought Sarah Palin’s speech following McCain’s announcement Friday “knocked it out of the ballpark. It was wonderful -- very, very powerful.”

Sarah Palin visited Ted and Ruby in Longview “many years ago” but attended a family party in Vancouver as recently as last year.

Although Sarah Palin’s name has been bandied about as a potential vice presidential candidate for several months, “I dismissed it. I knew Sarah was committed to the people of Alaska,” said Palin, reporting that the governor’s favorite dish is moose or caribou stew. “She is a true Alaskan.”

On the other hand, “she is a committed to all Americans. When you’re asked, you just can’t turn it down.”

A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, Palin was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, population 6,500, until she became governor two years ago. She has often dueled with her own party and has distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young. Both are under federal corruption investigations.

Asked how Sarah Palin would cope with her lack of national experience if she ever became president, Ted Palin said, “I think that she is the kind of gal that has the right stuff who would surround herself with the most brilliant people. Up in Alaska, it didn’t matter: Democrat, Republican, independent. She gets the best people on her cabinet.”

Will the Longview Palins campaign for their relative?

“Being down here, I can’t do much. But I will do anything she wants me to do,” Ted Palin said. “If she wants me to stand on a street corner, I will do it. She is a dynamite choice, and she has already made our family proud.”

Also I question her on the ongoing investigation in the action taken against her former brother-in-law. Hopefully that will be resolved before the vote so we can make up our minds. I am more confused now than I was a day or two ago. Be sure we check out everything and get the right selection this time. "

" I've gotta agree with Caddyshack. This was not a good choice for McCain. I was in the undecided column as a former Ron Paul supporter but there is no way Palin is ready to be commander in chief. I'm sorry but a 44 year old person with 19 months experience as governor of a state with the population of roughly Seattle, mayor of town of town of about 6000 before and a husband that works for BP as in British Petroleum is not the right choice to be #2 for our great nation. If McCain thought this would get him the Hillary vote he's wrong, although I wouldn't have voted for her anyway. VP IS A VERY BIG DEAL!!! This is especially true for McCain who would be the oldest person ever inagurated as president if he were to win. Big Mistake on the part of the Republicans! Now I'll be voting for Obama/Biden. "

" I welcome the opportunity to find out more about Gov. Palin. I'm afraid it is too late in the race to bring in someone whose background isn't known and McCain had better qualified candidates to choose from. It is unfortunate for Gov. Palin that she was selected as a political ploy. Chances are that she could be a strong leader in her own right, but an woman who isn't Pro-Choice isn't going to get the Hillary voters fired up. Nobody knows where she stands on health care either, and that was a given with Hillary and Barack. Regardless of her strides in politics, she's still not on board with the American people in the very basic respect for our Constitutional rights and that puts McCain/Palin out of the running for me too, I'm afraid. Her nomination also smacks of political maneuvering and not a genuine standing on the issues. OBAMA/BIDEN! YES WE CAN! "

You've got to be kidding. Isn't her only "qualification" the fact she's female? That's pretty patronizing to the supporters of the very qualified Hillary Clinton (my lack of support not withstanding) She makes Dan Quayle look like a great pick. Is McCain a maverick or just plain nuts; what's the difference in this case. "

Take your pick any one of the above would've probably gotten my vote for McCain...

Pure & simple this is a stunt by McCain's staff to try to get the Hillary vote. If you want a woman why not Rice? If he's looking for a trophy woman on each arm this makes sense. "

But please tell me what experience Gov. Palin has which will make her a qualified leader of our armed forces at war, foreign policy negotiator, economic reconstructionist and a commanding figure in Congress. And if you can provide evidence of her qualifications without questioning the qualifications of anyone else, then we will have a discussion. The truth is that John McCain once was a maverick for justice, but he has caved significantly to the far right of the party. That is a show of weakness from him. Senility is another concern when it comes to how many homes he owns and the claims of Americans in a mental recession. His choices haven't exactly made the party happy, nor the undecided voters. And upholding the Constitution is the first oath taken in that office. Don't let us forget about it. And don't let us forget that it applies to ALL of us; not just the few. "

The fact that you support her but cannot cite her accomplishments is woefully inadequate to place you in a position to criticize others. And, if you are speaking of the AGIA, it was certainly not her idea and has been in the development stages since 1998. Do you know what employment benefit to the Alaskans it will bring? Or who will bear the costs of construction overages? Or what tax structure has been set up to defray costs of maintenance? Is it to be owned by Canada and leased through the US? These were issues in the late 90s. What changed and was is resolved in the best interest of Alaskans? "

I think that he mistakenly believes that he'll grab Hillary's supporters. Well Senator, I am a Hillary supporter and my support was not based on her genitalia. It was based on her progressive plans and her pro women's rights platform. Women make up over 50% of the workforce now, we outnumber our male classmates at universities, and we're not impressed with Palin in comparison to Hillary.

Palin is a pretty package with some minor league experience, but because she's a looker, I doubt the MSM will villify her as they did Hillary. That alone will really tick us Hillary supporters off!!!

I'm not an Obama-bot, but I believe the Obama/Biden team offer a much better platform for pointing this country in the direction it needs to head. We need to be SMART, not just strong. We haven't seen SMART in nearly 8 years, and with McCain's antiquated mentality (the man cannot even use a computer!), it's doubtful we'll see it anytime soon.

Supposedly the party that believes so strongly in feminism, why would they be critical of a young, smart woman making her way in politics? One comment said she is against women because she is pro-life. Really? I am a woman, and strongly pro-life. Pro-choice/Pro-life is not a woman/man issue, it's a life/death issue. I think someone who chose life and gave birth to a baby with downs syndrome is an amazingly strong person. Another comment said "she won't last long, she'll want to stay home with her children". How incredibly sexist. That would never be said about a man running for office. It's all very interesting to me that people love to talk about what they they believe, but when confronted with the issues it all goes out the window. Liberalism is truly a mental disorder. "

Had Obama chose Hillary, I think McCain would have picked a man. Smart guy because he just got my vote. "

I find your comments really offensive. I think it is pretty pious for you to place yourself on such a pedestal simply because you are at home with your kids. For your information, just because your child has to occasionally attend preschool or daycare, (or maybe even more than occasionally...) it DOES NOT mean that their parent has placed them in the category of a pet. And ITS NOT always because we want a freaking waverunner. For some of us, working is NOT a choice. Its either have the lights on or stay home....either way, whether working outside or inside the home, we are putting our child first by meeting their needs. As a married mother of two, I am nearly done earning my degree as an RN and have carried a part time job all the way through in addition to my husband's job to make ends meet. For me, it has not been a choice, its been a necessity. My children know I love them and I am doing what I have to do. Your comments have been rude and offensive, not to mention pretty narrow-minded and unfair. Lets try to stay on track with the election and not use the comment board to post rants on how one choice is superior to another. "

Just think of all of the hardworking women who struggle to work and keep their families happy, Republicans and Democrats! And to say that Republican women who stay home have husbands who stray less is also ridiculous. Repeat studies have shown that strong, secure men LIKE having an intelligent, accomplished women at their side, and they have great sex lives to boot! Sister, that's not a partisan issue! I am not dissing PALIN in any way - she had to leave her Downs Syndrome Baby for the office when it was just 3 days old. Think that was easy for her? Don't insult your hardworking sisters that way, they and YOU and YOUR kids deserve better from us. Palin, Clinton, Pelosi, and scores of other women are creating a whole new world for our daughters that is not limited to teaching and nursing, and we should be thankful for it, not critical. An intelligent person only has to ask themselves one question when deciding who to vote for, "is this country and the typical middle class citizen better off now than when Bush took office?" The answer is resoundingly "NO". Our country is facing a national debt that will not be paid off for generations to come (if ever), we are embroiled in a war that McCain forsees we should stay in for a millenium (easy choice for him to make since his life span is nearly over) and people having to use credit cards just to pay for everyday necessities because family wage jobs are being shipped overseas. However, should anything happen to McCain, in what possible sense is she ready to run the nation? At least if anything were to happen to Obama, his 2nd in command has plenty of experience, at the very least in foreign policy, which I consider extremely important in this world climate. I just cannot imagine what McCain was thinking. I'm sure she would be wonderful in any number of cabinet positions, but vice president? There is no way that I will vote for McCain now. I am in no way comfortable with the idea that she could potentially become the president. In my opinion, McCain's "maverick move" today effectively sealed the deal for Obama. "

This man is *dangerous* because of his lack of even temperament, his cold war mentality, and his inability to grasp that the U.S. has limitations. It's not terrorists that will get us killed, it is voting based on ignorance and fear. Mark my words, this man takes office, our country will go to MORE unnecessary wars, it will escalate, and we will all be in unstoppable danger. So which cities do we pick to have gone...Seattle? NYC? LA? New York? This man is a raving war mongerer, he's even said in his speech that we will have more wars, and I'm sure he's already plotting. A woman who would rather be a mother than abort a child; a mother who supports her daughter; a leader who stands up when leaders in her state party are wrong; a strong leader who has improved the business climate in Alaska so much that state voters give her a 79 percent approval rating. I will guarantee you this if you compare right now Sarah Palin to the racist Obama, you will see a strong, decisive leader in Palin against somebody who has been led by a racist reverend, a wife that isn't prooud of America, a slum lord for a financial backer, and a terrorist murderer who planted bombs that killed innocent people. Now I ask you? Which person has shown the stronger moral fiber and the intelligence to surround herself with people with character and faith. What experience does Obama had. Out of almost 500 days of Senate activity since taking office he's been in his seat for votes only 135 days. He has been a puppet of Pukelosi and Reid and never stepped away from party rhetoric. It was the Liberal Hawks support Liberal Demoncrat president LBJ who drafted more than 500,000 Americans into the Vietname War, of which 58,000 lost their lives. And it was Charles Rangel, Liberal from New York, who proposed a draft a recently as 2003. No Republican president has ever imposed a draft. That stain is completely on the Liberals. So if elected here are two things Obama will do: 1. He will, under pressure from Rangel, brink back the draft. Some 200,000 will go into the military. 2. Following in the footsteps of Bill Clinton and impose the biggest tax increase on America. His campaign promise was to tax the top 1 percent. Apparently the top 1 percenty includes anyone making between $30,000 and $75,000, the people who got hit the hardest by Clinton's tax increase on the top 1 percent in 1992. So CCd if you want a draft, I dare to vote for Obama. Because history will tell you that only the Liberal Demoncrats have ever drafted an American into the military. Learn your facts before you vote for a non-military man who will possibly sentence you to die. McCain knows the pain of war, and he won't force anyone into the military. The Demoncrats will do it in a second. "

The Liberals have played partisan politics just like they would with Obama in the White House. America isn't ready to let Nancy Pukelosi run this country. Do you think? Last time I looked, President Bush had a higher approval rating than the Reid-Pukelosi-led Congress. That really tells me all I need to know about your party. "

" RE Columbian -- Well if Clinton had not handed us 9/11 we probably wouldn't be in debt. We will work our way out of it, America always has. You can keep attacking Gov. Palin all you want. The polls show who America favors, and it's not Obama or Biden. As for drilling, why does the majority want more drilling? Because we are years, decades away from the alternative energy that Obama touts. Polls show that America also favors more nuclear power, but Obama doesn't? His plan? Corn-based ethanol. What's wrong with that? Well he helped secure billions if farm subsidies so land could be moved from food-based corn to ethanol-based corn. Why? Because several of his top campaign advisers and donors are in the industry. So was Obama selling his vote? And look at what that moving land from food-based corn to ethanol-based corn has done to our food prices. In addition, in places like South America and Indonesia rain forrests are being burned and cut down to plant palms for the palm oil used in ethanol. Everyone but Obama agrees that ethanol is now hurting the economy and the environment. So you can cry all you want about drilling but the more you cry, the more dependent we become on foreign oil. And if what you say about the oil going to foreign markets is true, how come Congress has not passed a law requiring it be kept in America? How come Obama has not authored such legislation? We know. "

" Earlier this week, Newsweek published a list of lies being spread by Obama supporters. http://www.newsweek.com/id/157986
4444 has added a new one. She never asked to be on the ticket. And no one else turned him down. She was the only one he asked. Oh well don't let anything get in the way of a good lie, 4444. And talk about uneducated. You are on the Dean's List. Gov. Palin will make an excellent VP. She is a highly intelligent, strong woman who believes in her family and in the country. And that type of woman scares the Liberals. They are so scared that Obama's campaign has sent no less than 30 lawyers to Alaska to try to dig up dirt on the governor. I guess an 80 percent appproval rating is just something that Obama Liberals can't understand. They have never seen a figure that high. The only woman in this election that opted not to take a VP slot was Hillary. And I can't really blame her. After all, she did say over and over again that "Sen. Obama does not have the experience or leadership to lead this country." At least that shows she is not a hypocrite like most of the Liberals. You liberals keep bashing Gov. Palin. I am guessing by the next poll, we will really see what America thinks of that strategy. The next thing we will probably hear about is Obama asking Michael "Fat Liberal" Moore to do a leftist propaganda job on her. "

TDN Bad Boy wrote on Sep 12, 2008 9:44 AM:

" Wow Columbian you sure like to distort your facts. She said IF Georgia becomes a NATO member, as a NATO member, we would be required to defend a member that is attacked. If you don't want us in NATO say so. Otherwise, ALL NATO members ultimately may have to act. Do you just to disregard all our obligations. And by the way, when are you going to admit that Iraq is not a WAR. Vietnam -- a conflict your party created out of the myth of a sipan attacking a U.S. warship in the Gulf of Tonkin. The great Liberal LBJ with major support from Hawks in our state Jackson and Magnuson -- demanded an immediate war response and he ultimately is repsonsible for creating a draft that sent 58,000 Americans to their death and maiming hundreds of thousands of other Americans. And that does not include the hundreds of thousands of dead or maimed Vietnames. I guess President Bush is responsible for that too, in your mind. Gov. Palin is right as a member of NATO we have responsibilities to the other members and them to us. We should not let Russia rule our allies with an iron hand. That kind of appeasement led to Hitler in Germany. Are you in favor of allowing that again? "

" I won't have a dispute if we go in and clean up this problem, too. http://worldblog.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/09/12/1382073.aspx I wonder if the Liberals would argue against it. You know like "We can sit down and talk to them and get them to change." Or, "We should want until France and Germany act." Or "We should leave this up to the UN." This is deplorable and while not an act of war it is a major reason why the U.S. should strongly use whatever means possible to influence the people in that part of the world that it is time to end the barbaric traditions practiced by radical Muslims. Which side do you think Obama will take on that issue? I know where McCain-Palin stand and I am with them.
But hey these were just girls and women right, Liberals? "

" Columbian, can you ever say anything that isn't your party rhetoric? Do you have an original idea? Haven't heard one yet. The current polls are leaning to McCain and they show two reasons: Experience and leadership. Hillary said racist Obama doesn't have the experience or leadership skills to be president. Biden said he wasn't qualified to be president. More than 18 million in your own party did not vote for him, and now you expect him to be president? Kerry has a better chance. Oh yeah that was 2004 and look what happened. And by the way, when did we go to war with Iran? Here answers were pefect. She could never answer a question that would satisfy you. We all know that. How come you never tells us how good your guy will be, what he will do. I tought McCain's leadership, experience, ability to write meaningful bipartisan legislation all the time. You never say what Obama has accomplished, what his qualifications are, etc. Why is that? Oh and by the way Palin did know that Russia has a veto on UN Security Council? That's far more than Obama new. "
