Longview Palin family proudly hears news that relative is McCain's pick for V.P.
Friday, August 29, 2008 11:17 PM PDT
By Andre Stepankowsky
The Palin family of Longview was bursting its buttons Friday. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Sen. John McCain’s surprise choice as his vice presidential running mate, is married to the nephew of Ted Palin, a well-known retired Longview businessman.
“Honest to God, I’m so proud of her. She’s the most likeable person,” said Ted Palin, 79, speaking almost breathlessly by cell phone Friday morning.
He said neither her nor most other members of the close-knit Palin family knew before this morning that McCain, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, had tapped the Alaska governor.
“In the morning I always turn on Fox News. I said, ‘My God! There’s Sarah!’ I couldn’t believe it. I thought (former Massachusetts governor Mitt) Romney was the guy. They have kept this a tremendous secret. Even her dad found out on Fox this morning,” Palin said.
Palin’s brother, Jim Palin of Wasilla, Alaska, is the father of Todd Palin, who is married to the Sarah Palin. Alaska’s first couple has five children, the youngest of whom was born in April with Down syndrome.
Ted Palin said he and his wife, Ruby, hope to see their famous relative in Fairbanks, Alaska, in September. They will attend a Sept. 11 farewell picnic for the governor’s son Tracker, whose Stryker brigade is due to deploy to Iraq the next day. It’s now uncertain whether Sarah Palin will be able to attend because of the need to campaign.
“I know it would break her heart” if she can’t attend, Ted Palin said.
Palin formerly ran the Lakeside Industries asphalt plant in Longview. He said today’s announcement coincided with the governor’s 20th wedding anniversary, this week’s anniversary of women’s suffrage and John McCain’s 72nd birthday, also Friday.
Several times, Palin said Sarah Palin is a “nice” and “gracious” person who, however, “won’t be pushed around. When she goes up against (Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe) Biden, she won’t be pushed around. She is a strong lady.”
Palin said he thought Sarah Palin’s speech following McCain’s announcement Friday “knocked it out of the ballpark. It was wonderful -- very, very powerful.”
Sarah Palin visited Ted and Ruby in Longview “many years ago” but attended a family party in Vancouver as recently as last year.
Although Sarah Palin’s name has been bandied about as a potential vice presidential candidate for several months, “I dismissed it. I knew Sarah was committed to the people of Alaska,” said Palin, reporting that the governor’s favorite dish is moose or caribou stew. “She is a true Alaskan.”
On the other hand, “she is a committed to all Americans. When you’re asked, you just can’t turn it down.”
A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, Palin was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, population 6,500, until she became governor two years ago. She has often dueled with her own party and has distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young. Both are under federal corruption investigations.
Asked how Sarah Palin would cope with her lack of national experience if she ever became president, Ted Palin said, “I think that she is the kind of gal that has the right stuff who would surround herself with the most brilliant people. Up in Alaska, it didn’t matter: Democrat, Republican, independent. She gets the best people on her cabinet.”
Will the Longview Palins campaign for their relative?
“Being down here, I can’t do much. But I will do anything she wants me to do,” Ted Palin said. “If she wants me to stand on a street corner, I will do it. She is a dynamite choice, and she has already made our family proud.”

VP IS A VERY BIG DEAL!
If any of you can say Palin is THE best choice McCain could've made you're a FOOL!
Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Sam Brownback, Duncan Hunter, Tom Tancredo, Fred Thompson, George Allen, Bill Frist, Chuck Hagel, Condeleeza Rice!
Take your pick any one of the above would've probably gotten my vote for McCain...
Pure & simple this is a stunt by McCain's staff to try to get the Hillary vote. If you want a woman why not Rice? If he's looking for a trophy woman on each arm this makes sense. "

I think that he mistakenly believes that he'll grab Hillary's supporters. Well Senator, I am a Hillary supporter and my support was not based on her genitalia. It was based on her progressive plans and her pro women's rights platform. Women make up over 50% of the workforce now, we outnumber our male classmates at universities, and we're not impressed with Palin in comparison to Hillary.
Palin is a pretty package with some minor league experience, but because she's a looker, I doubt the MSM will villify her as they did Hillary. That alone will really tick us Hillary supporters off!!!
I'm not an Obama-bot, but I believe the Obama/Biden team offer a much better platform for pointing this country in the direction it needs to head. We need to be SMART, not just strong. We haven't seen SMART in nearly 8 years, and with McCain's antiquated mentality (the man cannot even use a computer!), it's doubtful we'll see it anytime soon.
In 2000, McCain was my candidate. Not THIS time. No way. No how. No McCain.
Signed, an ex-Republican, a military Vet, an educated professional, and a bitter small town woman all rolled into one. "

Family first, we don't need anymore latch-key kids. Oh, and I don't apologize for my opinion that when possible children should be with a parent and not a paid care-worker. It's amazing how many people put there kids in the same category at a pet when they really didn't need the his/hers waverunners. Ya, I know some of you won't truly get what I mean. "

I find your comments really offensive. I think it is pretty pious for you to place yourself on such a pedestal simply because you are at home with your kids. For your information, just because your child has to occasionally attend preschool or daycare, (or maybe even more than occasionally...) it DOES NOT mean that their parent has placed them in the category of a pet. And ITS NOT always because we want a freaking waverunner. For some of us, working is NOT a choice. Its either have the lights on or stay home....either way, whether working outside or inside the home, we are putting our child first by meeting their needs. As a married mother of two, I am nearly done earning my degree as an RN and have carried a part time job all the way through in addition to my husband's job to make ends meet. For me, it has not been a choice, its been a necessity. My children know I love them and I am doing what I have to do. Your comments have been rude and offensive, not to mention pretty narrow-minded and unfair. Lets try to stay on track with the election and not use the comment board to post rants on how one choice is superior to another. "

Obama says he is for change and then picks a VP thats old school so someone knows something.
No need to go into McCains credentials they are undisputable.

I have read good things about Sarah Palin before this nomination. Im thinking, finally a real down to earth person with good common since, not corrupted by big business, cares about her country and its citizens. Im not worried about what experience she has to run the country, you either have the knack or you dont. Besides no president or vice president goes it alone, they have a staff of experts and advisors for everything. I hope she gets elected, maybe she will bring some sanity back to the office. I just wish she was running for President. "

And talk about uneducated. You are on the Dean's List. Gov. Palin will make an excellent VP. She is a highly intelligent, strong woman who believes in her family and in the country. And that type of woman scares the Liberals. They are so scared that Obama's campaign has sent no less than 30 lawyers to Alaska to try to dig up dirt on the governor. I guess an 80 percent appproval rating is just something that Obama Liberals can't understand. They have never seen a figure that high. The only woman in this election that opted not to take a VP slot was Hillary. And I can't really blame her. After all, she did say over and over again that "Sen. Obama does not have the experience or leadership to lead this country." At least that shows she is not a hypocrite like most of the Liberals. You liberals keep bashing Gov. Palin. I am guessing by the next poll, we will really see what America thinks of that strategy. The next thing we will probably hear about is Obama asking Michael "Fat Liberal" Moore to do a leftist propaganda job on her. "
