SEATTLE — A shooting during the Northwest Folklife festival over the Memorial Day weekend at the Seattle Center led Mayor Greg Nickels to say he would ban guns on all city-owned property.

But with the Bumbershoot festival coming up this weekend at the center, there’s no gun ban in effect. The city says it’s still developing a rule that can stand up in court.

Two Bellevue-based gun rights groups, the Second Amendment Foundation and the Citizens Committee for the Right to keep and Bear Arms, both plan a legal challenge.

Meanwhile, state lawmakers have asked Attorney General Rob McKenna for an opinion on whether state laws on firearms overrule a mayor’s executive order. That opinion may be ready by the end of September.

" Banning guns is not going to solve the problem! If guns were banned, I've no doubt crime would escalate! I can see visions of 'Black Market'. "

" I would take time off from work without pay in order to protest this one... son lives in Seattle so I would have a place to stay! I agree with ya country gal... more criminals would have guns and others would be sitting ducks! "carry a gun cause one can't carry a cop" "

" banning guns means =less risk for thiefs
= more crimes being commited and only the criminals would have them .
point: cops can't be everywhere ! so what are we supposed to do stab them with a fork ! without guns this country would be like the middle east. punish the criminals and not the good citizens who use them right. quit giving them all this good time and making deals for less time they chose to do the crime let them do the time ! so they can get out sooner and repeat there crimes in shorter time less penitalites equal more crimes PUNISH THE CRIMINALS NOT THE PEOPLE!!!! if you use a weapon to commit a crime get life in prison no parole and there would be less crime NO EXCEPTIONS :VIPER "

" Unfortunately, the so-called ban doesn't have any affect on the availibility of guns. No black market will be necessary. What it does do is restrict law abiding citizens from the one tool that levels the playing field when some decides to shoot up a mall, or a park, or a friday night baseball game full of children. There are those who have chosen not to hope, to simply have faith that no harm will come to them. Faith isn't an action plan, regardless of what the minister says. Many are former soldiers, or police, who made the decision to prepare to fight, if necessary to save lives. It's a sacrafice, believe me, to think and prepare in this manner, but they do so willingly. You don't even know them in a crowd, they disappear. But take that right away from them and your family isn't any safer, it's less safe. Because the soldier follows a voice, one with service, duty and honor as its compass points and will obey even a stupid decision- but the nut who wants to shoot your park up? He's listening to another voice. One that just might encourage him further if a ban on handguns goes into effect. "

" Mayor Greg Nickels to say he would ban guns on all city-owned property.
All you Rambos need to read before you insert your foot in your mouth.
Never ceases to amaze me when something is mentioned about gun control everyones chest blows up. If a policeman shoots a armed person he is attacked on here for not using less then lethal force but you want to allow a bunch of people with no skills what so ever to run around packing "heat".The sky is not falling and I would hate to live in a country where there are no controls. I have been to some of those countries and believe me its nuts. Oh I forgot Americans are much smarter then anyone else."Not". Just more arrogant. Just my opinion. "

transplant wrote on Aug 25, 2008 11:17 AM:

" I'm sorry, we're arrogant? Most of the people who choose to carry do so after a life of service that came quietly, without the personal rewards that most measure success by. They don't seek any attention and you don't even know that they're standing behind you. And they know that the sky is not falling, but that there are some very bad people (yes, right here in good ole' U.S. of A.) who are throwing big rocks into the air and they don't care where they fall. Ask the students at Virginia Tech if the sky fell for them that day, ask the folks at the Tacoma Mall. Ask the families of the eight killed recently in the Westroads Mall in Omaha, or the suvivors of the shooting that killed seven in the Xerox plant in Hawaii. The majority of people who willingly arm themselves in the protection of themselves and others are also disciplined enough to train. Don't worry about those folks with "no skills running around packing heat". They're not. They either left them under the front seat of their truck or they'll be to scared to figure out how to get it out of their belt when the time comes. Do I think some test of proficiency is in order? Absolutely. But let's solve the problem the right way. not with a knee-jerk reaction like Mayor Nickols. "

Rosey Glasses wrote on Aug 25, 2008 12:41 PM:

" I heard that transplant. I don't carry, but I do believe that people can stop these terrible acts, people cause them. I believe the second ammendment is there for a reason, which is to allow the people to protect themselves and hunt for game (to eat). Those that believe that gun control works need to research Adolf Hitler's Germany, they had gun control. It is our constitutional right and duty (duty to learn how to use one). "

TheGenius wrote on Aug 25, 2008 1:02 PM:

" Transplant said it all. If "Thought" feels that Americans are arrogant, maybe it's best if he moved to France so he could sit in a cafe, sip espressos, smoke a pack, and whine about America while wearing a Che Guevara T-shirt. "

DW wrote on Aug 25, 2008 1:06 PM:

" Well Thought, I guess I would be one of your so called Rambos. I have had a LCCP, (Lisense to Carry Concealed Pistol), for over 15 years. About the only time I do not have a weapon on my person is if I am at work, or in a public building, (post office, School, etc.), where it is prohibited. I practice regularly and would protect you or anyone else that was in a life threatening situation like the ones that Transplant mentioned. Chances are I will never be in that position, but if it was to happen at least I would have a fighting chance instead of some maniac killing me and however many he can until he is stopped. And I would fight to stop any restriction of gun rights so we don't start down the slippery slope to banning guns period. If you look at the statistics, where it is permited to have guns, gun violence is lower than where it is banned. That's 'cause the bad guys know that they have the best chance to carry out their horrific plans. I have just one thing to say to those dirt bags that do this.......Please, shoot yourself first. "

Mrs. Pellwerds wrote on Aug 25, 2008 3:59 PM:

" Wouldn't it be much more effective if they just made it against the law to shoot people? Oh wait, there is a law against that... I guess the Mayor thinks all those people who don't follow that law WILL follow a gun ban. Hmm? "

Thought wrote on Aug 25, 2008 4:14 PM:

" DW.. Not packing in a public place, work and schools are a form of gun control.. Nice to see you believe in some forms.. " Genius" Its not I that think Americans are arrogant its the rest of the world that thinks that.
If you abide by the laws as DW appears to then I see nothing wrong. I also am against banning guns.Even harder to govern stupidity. Right Genius ?? "

TheGenius wrote on Aug 25, 2008 6:33 PM:

" Bloody right on that count in regards to governing stupidity. I could care less what Europeans really think about America. They can have their opinions and all, but I'm not bothered by what they think. Nor do I think they really care what we think of them. "

Taintersniff wrote on Aug 25, 2008 7:12 PM:

" I am not an advocate for gun control. However, could somebody provide an example of some regular joe that was carrying a gun that single handedly stopped or prevented a shooting spree? Someone provided four examples of shootings, but no one has provided an instance where the good citizen actually saved the day. Maybe I missed it in the news? "

cheney119 wrote on Aug 25, 2008 9:13 PM:

" Allow me to put this in simple terms for you simpltons; using handguns against people is wrong. Therefore using them to defend yourself is two wrongs (ie just another wrong). I'd rather die from a handgun than use one. That is the price we may have to pay for a safe society. Now you may say I'm crazy, that I should be as blood thirsty as you are. Fine! This is freedom of speech and my opinion is as valid as the gun nuts. "

Gondolapete wrote on Aug 25, 2008 9:16 PM:

" The ONLY place my gun is not with me is if I enter a courthouse..I am not aware of any law that says I cannot conceal carry in a post office..perhaps someone could show it to me???..Also be aware that Wa state is also legal to "open carry". "

transplant wrote on Aug 25, 2008 10:28 PM:

" Cheney, you could only be French (sorry, but that was for the simpltons comment). I'm not a rocket scientist, but I am a college-educated professional, and one you has been involved in the killing of people, with a gun, for a just and noble cause. By the way, the price we paid for a safe society came at the end of a gun, starting with the revolutionary war and continuing through the current one. Our Constitution (the one that gives you your freedom of speech, by the way), wasn't handed to our fore fathers, it was demanded by them and defended by their sons and our fathers. As for two wrongs, your math is fuzzy. The first wrong is going to continue, and you suggest I simply lay down and accept it? That makes me a sheep, and sheep are simply eaten by wolves. Not me. I'll be a sheepdog, thank you. I'm not blood thirsty, but by gawd, I'm not going to lay back and accept the wolf when he knocks. Oh, and when the wolf does come, my guess is that you'll be hiding behind a sheepdog with all of the other sheep. "

transplant wrote on Aug 25, 2008 10:48 PM:

" Cheney,I just cannot leave this one alone but I promise, no more digs and certainly none made against the French. By your premise, if a gun were being used to say, assault your child (I don't want to be too graphic here), and you were handed a gun to defend her, you would choose not to? If your spouse or significant other was being assualted with a gun and I came along to help, you'd demand that I limit my response, even if it meant we would all die. Even Ghandi didn't think like that. Please rehash this one. 'Nough said, I'm done. Flame if you choose. "

" To taintersniff..Everytime one of us "gun nuts" as cheney the libral demo calls us, we never run into any havoc,,I think we just miss all the fun.And if we all wernt banned to carry them,,maybe some "gun nut" would save the day???? "

Old Charlie wrote on Aug 25, 2008 11:12 PM:

They can use your support in the legal battles aginst the stupidity of cities like Seattle, Washinton D.C., Chicago, San Francisco. "

DW wrote on Aug 26, 2008 4:24 AM:

" So Cheney, I guess you would defend yourself with your bicycle?? Good Lord, what flavor of kool-aid are you drinking? You would rather die at the hand of a gun than use one?? Thank God your not defending this country!! Transplant is right, you must have some French in you. Taintersniff, I guess you missed the news about the grandma that held a burgler at gun point and made him call 911 so the cops could come arrest him just last week. Or the mall shooting last year where an armed gunman was shot and killed by a lady with gun. And if I had it my way Thought, it would be legal to carry a pistol in schools and government buildings if you have a conceal carry permit. "
