The Clatskanie-based Wauna Federal Credit Union put out a scam alert Friday afternoon.

Credit union officials said members have received phone recordings advising that their cards have been deactivated and prompting them to provide the 16 digit number that would given to the security department.

Credit union officials said the recording seemed to refer to a St. Helens Credit Union, but it is possible that it refers to Wauna’s St. Helens Branch.

In a press release, the credit union said “under no circumstances should the consumers provide this information. Financial institutions would not use a recording to verify a debit or credit card number. Always call your local financial institution branch with concerns about account security.”

“If a member has provided their card number (VISA Credit or Debit) they should call their local financial institution branch for security options immediately.

Wauna Federal Credit Union has branches in Astoria, Clatskanie, St Helens, Vernonia and Warrenton.

" Thank you Wauna for the warning. When they call the best thing to do is just hang up. I hope that no one falls for this scam. "

" In this day and age of identity theft awareness and all of the communication to people from countless entities (banks, police agencies, numerous victims, media...) it is unbelievable that anyone would fall victim to this poorly perpetrated "scam". "
