Agents of the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Narcotics Task Force, assisted by Kelso police, arrested Malcom Enlo Smith, 44, on Monday on suspicion of attempted kidnapping and witness tampering.

Smith, who was out of custody awaiting trail on April drug delivery and drug possession charges, allegedly went to a Longview residence in the 300 block 18th Avenue on Saturday afternoon and confronted a witness in the pending trial.

Smith reportedly pointed a handgun at the witness, threatened him and punched him in the face, causing a minor injury. Witnesses intervened, causing Smith and an accomplice to flee, according to a task force news release.

Monday, agents put Smith’s Kelso home under surveillance and coordinated his arrest after they saw him leave. A search of Smith’s residence and vehicle turned up more than a pound of methamphetamine, $14,000 cash and other evidence, according to the press release.

Smith was booked into the Cowlitz County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail in connection with attempted kidnapping, second-degree assault, intimidating a witness, felony harassment, and possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver. Additional arrests are expected, the news release said.

" This is a God send for the neighborhood. We have been hoping for this for a long time. It is pretty bad that you can tell a people and tell people and it takes a year minimum for anything to happen. I know that the police are stretched thin. There is justice after all though. He is back in jail where her belongs. Now get the rest of them. "

" It just goes to say that crime doesn't pay. I agree with the Kelso Gringo, a pound of meth and $14,000 cash, that's definately not personal use!!! "
