LONG BEACH — Six people were injured Sunday afternoon near Long Beach when a driver lost control while trying to do “doughnuts” on the sand, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Charges are pending against the driver, Jeramy S. Pithoud, 20, of Ridgefield, Wash., in connection with vehicular assault (a felony) and driving under the influence of alcohol, according to a state patrol news release.

According to the state patrol, Pithoud was driving a 1992 Ford Explorer southbound on the beach about a mile north of the Bolstad Beach approach shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday. As he tried to do a “doughnut” maneuver, the vehicle fishtailed, then rolled, the state patrol said. The Explorer was destroyed. Troopers were unable to determine if any occupants were wearing seat belts.

Pithoud was transported to Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco for treatment of internal injuries and a cut to his arm. A passenger, Latanya V. Mata, 17, of Ridgefield was transported to the same hospital for treatment of a broken collarbone.

The other passengers, Benjamen D. Wray, 18, of Vancouver; Nicholas R. Small, 19, of Vancouver; Justin L. Pithoud, 18, of Ridgefield; and Tyler C. Heim 18, of Ridgefield, received minor injuries but refused aid, the state patrol said.

All passengers were cited with being minors in possession of alcohol.

" With many other comments to articles about alcohol there is always mention of "revenue" well I am now asking if it is really worth that bit of "revenue" to read these kinds of articles that contributed to that? Any one of these kids could have died is that really worth the "revenue?" If anyone answers yes to these questions would it still be yes if it happened to one of your own? I would certainly hope that you would have a change of heart! "

" Too bad kids have the " It won't happen to me" theory applied to there everyday stupidness. I guess this just shows them and hopefully a ton of others who are friends with the kids or who are reading about it that it indeed can and will happen to you if you are stupid ebough to give it the chance. " Ban Driving "

" Why are cars allowed on the beach? My husband and I were on that beach when the accident happend. Those kids were speeding. One person was thrown out of the car! He managed to stagger back to the car, but not before having to shove his shorts back up because the force of his landing shucked them downed to his knees. How many little kids are on that beach? Families flying kites, people walking? My husband went running towards the water hoping that he wouldn't get hit...instead those jerks flipped their car and managed to walk away? Ban driving on the beach and make underage drinking have a harsher punishment. "

" I agree with you Cookiemonster. There should be stronger penalties for all drunk drivers no matter what age. And yet there are those out there that think the legal drinking age should be dropped to 18. I think they should raise it to 25 and driving age to 18. "
