One season away from volleyball was more than Lacey Flatz could endure — she missed leaping above the net and hammering the ball to the floor through opposing defenses.
Now that she’s transferred to Lower Columbia College and inked a letter of intent to play volleyball there, Flatz will reunite with the sport that earned her kudos prior to her graduation from Toutle Lake High School in 2007. She spent last fall at Eastern Washington University, where she did not play volleyball.
Flatz earned consecutive all-Central 2B League honors as an outside hitter during her junior and senior seasons with the Ducks. She also helped TL win consecutive Class 2B state softball titles.
“I’ve played two years with the Cowlitz Volleyball Club along with four years of varsity volleyball at Toutle Lake where I was a starter for three years,” she said. “Toutle Lake has always had successful athletic teams, and I have the desire to continue winning because I don’t like to lose.”
Flatz joins returning players Kacie DeRosier and Emily Damschen, along with a bevy of newcomers on the Lady Devils’ fall roster.
“Lacey is an explosive outside hitter with a great work ethic and a desire to win,” LCC coach Marcy Gilchrist said. “She has a very quick arm swing, and when she connects and it’s right, it’s a very powerful hit. She’ll provide us a lot of power and consistency on the outside, along with some competition for the position.”
Flatz also brings leadership and energy to the youthful Lady Devils.
“I hope to pump everyone up,” the 5-foot-8 Flatz said. “I might be playing a little in the middle, but I’m scared because of all the taller players in the league. I hope my jumps will get me over them from the outside.”
Flatz is studying business administration, and plans to eventually transfer to a four-year school.
“I’ll see if I continue playing after next season,” she added. “I hope to go to Washington State University if I don’t get any offers to play volleyball.”
