Lacey woman arrested in death of newborn

LACEY, Wash. — Police have arrested a Lacey, Wash., woman for investigation of first-degree manslaughter in the death of her newborn daughter.

Police say 29-year-old Jessica Wemhaner was arrested Wednesday and was taken to the Thurston County Jail in Olympia.

On Sunday, Wemhaner was taken by ambulance to Providence St. Peter Hospital. Police say doctors told them the woman showed signs of having recently delivered a baby, but she and her 28-year-old husband denied she had given birth.

Police obtained a search warrant for a home in Lacey and discovered the body of a newborn girl who was less than a day old.

An autopsy Monday determined the girl had been born alive after a full-term pregnancy. Police say toxicology and microscopic studies are pending analysis at the State Patrol Crime Laboratory.

" Plato: I will not show compassion to this woman or her husband. There is absolutely no excuse that could justify these actions. Say the baby did pass of natural causes. WHY on earth would she deny having gave birth? The paramedics might have been able to help... Just to fishy for me. Ugh... They were ready and willing to call the paramedics when Mrs. Wemhaner life was at risk. But would not save the child they are responsible for bringing into this world? Just sickening. You will get no compassion from me. "
