PORTLAND — Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon wants federal energy regulators to delay a decision on a proposed liquefied natural gas terminal on the Columbia River.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission appears ready to sign off on the terminal.

The commission has issued its final environmental review. State officials fear the agency may make up its mind without additional public notice or comment.

In a letter to the commission, Wyden called for a public meeting on the topic. Governor Ted Kulongoski has also asked for more time and called for the agency to redo its environmental analysis.

" Thank you, Senator Wyden. You have spoken in print, public and within the communities you represent your concerns about this project. For those of us across the river where are Senators Cantwell and Murray? How About Governor Gregoir. Seems the State of Washington doesn't include Cowlitz, Wahkiakum and Pacific Counties. Should these people who supposedly represent us be re-elected when due since they tend to ignore our existence? Same goes for Congressman Baird. Writing a letter is not the same as taking a solid stance and publicly supporting it. Only talking about an issue when directly asked is not taking a stance. This includes Takko, Blake and Hatfield as well. Get off the fence and truly take a stance. Your attempt of writing a letter to FERC does not constitute taking a strong stance and supporting it along with the people you represent. "

" The old saying goes, "In politics, perception is reality". This is something Sen. Wyden understands better than most. He and Gov. Kulongoski of Oregon appear to be doing more than any of our other NW elected officials. Sen. Wyden has supported the anti-LNG cause with his introduction of the Senate bill to give siting power back to the states. Our own Governor Gregoire doesn't even have a staffer respond to requests to hear our cause. That is a fact she may rue after the election. And whether Thoughtful knows it or not, some of the other politicians named as not doing enough are working behind the scenes for us. "

" Let's see, alternative energy source, good paying jobs, additional economic activity in the north west....why would anyone not want LNG. I hope it goes through and start building now!! "

" Gimpy-so they're working behind the scenes? How so? I've had access to communications with the majority of them and know what "working behind the scenes" means to them as far as this issue is concerned - they are appeasing a local landowner opposition group with lip service and making token contacts with little to no follow through. So much for their support. If know they are doing more, then why isn't it public knowledge. Why isn't it reported in the Daily News? Why are you privy to what they are doing and not the rest of SW Washington? "

thoughtful wrote on Aug 6, 2008 1:27 PM:

" DW - it's not an alternative energy source - it's natural gas from countries that hate our guts. It's also not "good paying jobs". The increases in the price of natural gas that have occured and are expected to keep occuring over the next several years have cost more than 118,000 American jobs since 2000 and about 3 million manufacturing jobs have been lost in that time due in large part to energy costs. Many manufacturers dependent on natural gas are relocating overseas where labor and energy costs are dirt cheap.

You think making the US even more dependent on foreign sources of energy will change those figures and facts? The only LNG we should consider should domestic and from our own fields such as Alaska or the huge newly discovered gas fields in Louisiana.

by the way. NorthernStar is not a huge energy company. In fact, they aren't a small energy company. They don't even have the money to finish the development stage of their project let alone any money to build or pay for their $56 million salmon plan. Are you going to finance the construction of their plant? "

" Well, thoughtful, I remember when those of us who first approached all the above mentioned legislators had to lobby very hard to get them to take a stand. But they listened and then they stood. The one thing that these individuals can do that we can't is cast votes in Congress supporting our positions. I have every faith that Baird, Takko, Blake and Hatfield will vote to repeal portions of the 2005 energy bill which took away the right of individual states to determine LNG placement. As for writing a letter to FERC, I believe that many highly placed legislators have written letters to FERC. FERC uses such pieces of paper in their outhouses! But these writers have gone on record to a Federal Agency in regard to their positions and frustrations. It is our governor who is the "Virgin Queen" in this fight. She won't take any stand at all. And she is supposed to care about her state?
As to Senator Wyden, I have stated before that he is a bulldog when he gets his teeth into something. But he also has only one vote. Lets not throw cold water on our representatives who have met with us, listened to us and shown respect for us as a constituency. Do you have any suggestions as to whom else we might turn to? Certainly not Deno Rossi. He doesn't seem to know that SW Washington exists either. As a conservative, I support any "NO LNG" legislator. "

" DW and pinky. What is it you don't get about outsourcing? The people who have the multitide of LNG jobs are the short term contractors and the ones manufacturing and delivering the stuff! So many of our jobs have gone overseas, so many of our products are from overseas, so much of our energy comes from overseas. Do you get it yet? We have to stop sending all of our money "overseas" for some piddeling few jobs in this small corner of the world that will not create a drop of profit for the small upriver communities on the Columbia. Go soak your heads. "

" Thoughtful, you know as well as I that this isn't the forum for this argument. If I were to announce anything here, it wouldn't be behind the scenes, would it?A lot of this will end up being decided by politics, like it or not. And politics is very nuanced. "

Thoughtful wrote on Aug 7, 2008 7:37 AM:

" Gimpy, this is the perfect forum for this argument. While Sen. Wyden and others in Oregon are publicly standing up and fighting for the rights of their state and citizens, we, in Washington, have to wait for the nuances and behind the scenes of politics. Give me a break! "

" Grams... how is having a facility on our soil "outsourcing?" It is very typical for people in the area to be so shut off to any change or advancement. Times are changing you have to change with them..... "

DW wrote on Aug 7, 2008 10:06 AM:

" All the people that seem to not want LNG are whiners. "Outsourcing, jobs overseas, Bush sucks, stupid Iraq war".
How would you know that the LNG will all come from over seas? And how is building a large LNG terminal here outsourcing? LNG is a very clean fuel. If companies that use LNG saw that we have a great source of it here, they may very well come here. Quit being such defetist. It really is o.k. to build stuff here. And as the salmon go, get the enviros out of the way and kill a few sea lions and preditory birds. That would go a long way into helping the salmon. I'll be happy to help with that for free. "

grams wrote on Aug 7, 2008 5:51 PM:

" pinky and DW. Good gosh were have you both been these last 2.5 years??????? Where do you think the LNG in the four functioning U.S. terminals comes from? OVERSEAS! LNG for United States terminals comes, and will come from Russia, Indonesia, Iran, Qatar, Nigeria, Australia, Spain etc. etc. etc. etc. The terminal here is specifically for the distribution of FOREIGN FOSSIL FUELS. The only state in our 50 which manufactuires LNG is Alaska, and they can't ship it to us so it goes to Japan. Check out the Jones Act. The Bradwood landing terminal is the conduit for foreign product. Just like the oil used to make our petrol which now cost us so much that some people have to choose between getting to work and eating! a defetist is a person who gives up, bends over and lets some reigning power put it to them! That is just what these international energy companies are doing to us now and want to expand on with LNG. And Duh, if we had enough natural gas to ship it as LNG to foreign countries, why would we need any from them now? That is the point. We don't need LNG! Think Big DW ! you are thinking local, local, local. sea lions and birds aren't the issue with salmon. Destroying their estuary nurseries where they transition from fresh water to salt water habitat is the issue. Don't soak your heads, they are too full of holes already! "
