It was probably the easiest letter-of-intent signing Lower Columbia College women’s basketball coach Chad Meadors has dealt with.
And it was a no-brainer for Sadie Salte, who knew all along she’d be a member of the Lady Devils after she graduated from Kelso High School.
“I talked with some other coaches, but I’ve always known I wanted to stay home and attend LCC,” Salte said. “It’s really convenient to have a school with a good program just across town. Chad’s a really neat guy, and there’s no reason for me to leave town when all I want is sitting right in front of my face.”
Salte, a 5-foot-10 sharp-shooting wing who was a three-year starter for the Lassies, led Kelso to runner-up finishes in the Greater St. Helens 3A League and Bi-District tournaments, along with a berth in the Class 3A state tournament. She wrapped up her Kelso career as the GSHL 3A co-Most Valuable Player, earned an All-Area first-team nod from The Daily News, and was tabbed MVP of the Lower Columbia Area High School All-Star Game.
“Sadie’s a tough kid with a lot of athletic ability who really wants to be a part of our program,” Meadors said. “It’s nice to have kids who have grown up watching LCC games and aspiring to be a member of the Lady Devils. She has a nice, well-rounded game with her ability to shoot and attack the basket, and she’s not afraid to take a charge.”
Salte has been conditioning on her own and participating in open gyms with her new teammates when she isn’t working for the City of Kelso.
“I’m excited to play at the community college level,” she said. “I’m a pretty good shooter with pop in my shots, and I like driving to the basket. I was able to use my size in high school to take smaller guards down on the block and use that to my advantage.”
Meadors believes Salte will immediately battle for a starting assignment.
“With a little more strength, she can defend in the post along with using her on the perimeter as a guard,” he said. “Our talent level will be through the roof with Sadie. It’s going to be a very exciting season.”
Salte is unsure about her field of study.
“I’m taking things step by step,” she added. “I’m interested in sports medicine and physical therapy, but we’ll see how it goes.”
