Former R.A. Long teacher Starkey sentenced

Former R.A. Long High School math teacher Joseph Ryan Starkey, 25, has been sentenced to 60 months in prison for three counts of third-degree rape of a child.
The court dismissed an additional charge of third-degree rape of a child and a charge of furnishing liquor to a minor from March 12 to 15.
Police said Starkey admitting harboring a runaway between March 12 and 15, having sexual intercourse with her and buying her alcohol.
Starkey told police the 15-year-old girl was a student in his math class at R.A. Long.
Starkey, who was also the boys’ soccer coach at the school, resigned from R.A. Long in March.
Dennis Edward Baker, 38, pleaded not guilty to 14 counts of third-degree rape of the same child and one count of furnishing liquor to a minor.
He was released on March 20 after posting $20,000 bail. He is awaiting trial, according to the county clerk’s office.
