Former R.A. Long High School math teacher Joseph Ryan Starkey, 25, has been sentenced to 60 months in prison for three counts of third-degree rape of a child.

The court dismissed an additional charge of third-degree rape of a child and a charge of furnishing liquor to a minor from March 12 to 15.

Police said Starkey admitting harboring a runaway between March 12 and 15, having sexual intercourse with her and buying her alcohol.

Starkey told police the 15-year-old girl was a student in his math class at R.A. Long.

Starkey, who was also the boys’ soccer coach at the school, resigned from R.A. Long in March.

Dennis Edward Baker, 38, pleaded not guilty to 14 counts of third-degree rape of the same child and one count of furnishing liquor to a minor.

He was released on March 20 after posting $20,000 bail. He is awaiting trial, according to the county clerk’s office.

" For those of you who defended him, it says right here in black and white that he admitted to having sexual intercourse with her. I'm sorry, but there is no defense for that, period!!!!! "

" This is happening all over the country. Go to www.schoolteachernews.com and click on the Scandal page. They have documented over 300 of these types of incidents since just the beginning of 2008. "

" How sad hope the guy serves the entire 60 months. Hope this is was all worth it for small amount of pleasure he received. Hope it is documented and he will never teach again once he gets out of prison. That his teaching license is suspended nationwide. This is horrible. "

" I can't decide if he is a neophyte pedophile or just a young, amoral man who should not have been teaching high school students. What a waste. "

" Kay- I think it's the amoral one. Many 15 yr olds look like adults, but he knew her age. Way to wreck your life. Why don't these guys learn?? Did he think he'd never get caught? "

" To Bulldog 42- Teaching licenses are issued by each State....it is not a 'national' certification. I think the punishment is way too harsh. I'm so happy to hear from all you highly moral folks out there, but I think a small percentage of young men are no match for an alluring, sexy 15 y/o girl (no, I haven't followed the specific details of this case).
