EUGENE, Ore. — A former Rose Festival princess faces shoplifting charges, though she has denied all involvement.
Nineteen-year-old Mercedes Whitecalf was the 2007 princess from Jefferson High School.
She attends the University of Oregon and holds several prestigious scholarships.
Whitecalf and two 16-year-old girls are suspected of taking thousands of dollars worth of clothes, jewelry and perfume from a Eugene boutique and malls.
Eugene police cited and released the three.
Nichole Maher, executive director of a Native American youth and family center where Whitecalf volunteered, called her an “outstanding role model” who has always been honest.

I do hope Ms. Whitecalf has learned a valuable lesson from this. Being a thief doesn't pay. She not only stole from merchants, she stole from the community as well. VERY DISSAPOINTED! "

Not everyone accused of a crime is guilty. She was accused, and has denied it. Let the courts figure out the truth. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED that an American citizen would promptly yell "GUILTY" based on a very small blurb in a newspaper (and before any court action whatsoever). "
