Three Cowlitz County organizations will share nearly $300,000 in federal money to pay for anti-drug programs for kids, Southwest Washington Congressman Brian Baird announced Tuesday.
The funding is part of $55 million in Drug Free Communities Support Program grants made to 568 facilities in 48 states, according to Baird’s office.
According to the National Office of Drug Control Policy, these programs are partially responsible for a 25 percent decline in youth drug use in the past 5 years.
“In just a few short years since I founded the meth caucus in Congress, kids are getting the message, that meth use is a one-way ticket to nowhere,” Baird, D-Wash., said in a press release. “What we spend on these programs is a drop in the bucket compared to the cost in money and lives associated with meth addiction.”
Each community must match every federal dollar it receives.
The Cowlitz County grantees are:
• Cowlitz Substance Abuse Coalition, $100,000.
• Longview Drug-Free Community Problem Solving Partnership, $99,985
• Castle Rock C.A.R.E Coalition, $100,000
