A 9-year-old Mossy Rock boy was killed Saturday morning when the dump truck he was riding in with his father toppled off a Weyerhaeuser logging road, authorities said.
The boy’s father, 31, was taken by medical helicopter to an undisclosed hospital. Authorities did not release the identity of the boy or his father Saturday evening.
Authorities said the man had been driving with his son on a remote logging road five miles north of Highway 504 shortly after 10:30 a.m. when the truck slid off an embankment.
The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, said Steve Aust, a patrol commander with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.
It was also unclear what the boy and his father were doing in the area. Aust said they may have been hauling a load of rock.
Eric Koreis, the chief of Cowlitz Fire District 6 in Castle Rock, one of the agencies that responded to the crash, said it occurred on Weyerhaeuser logging road 516, near the Cowlitz County line. An investigation team was at the site well into the evening, he said.
“My heart just sank hearing the story of this incident,” Koreis said. “It just aches for the family and everybody that responded. I just can’t imagine.”
