Plans for a trail extending south of Castle Rock are getting more ambitious.
In May, The Cowlitz County Trails Committee and Cowlitz on the Move unveiled a proposal for a 13-mile loop connecting Castle Rock and Lexington.
Now the city of Longview is suggesting that the trail for non-motorized recreation extend all the way south to Gerhart Gardens.
Construction on any part of the trail is dependent on government grants that haven’t been secured, and it will likely be built one section at a time.
The Castle Rock-Lexington loop was planned with a grant from the National Park Service.
Longview is applying for a similar grant to design the section south of Lexington.
No specific route is suggested at this point, said Dick Mueller, Longview’s recreation supervisor. “We don’t want to panic any property owner,” he said. “It’s very general.”
The proposed route north of Lexington follows public rights-of-way.
Longview is gathering more letters of support before submitting its application, Mueller said. So far, “there appears to be broad support for this section to be planned,” he said.
The city will hear in November whether the planning grant will be funded.
