A criminal case that made Northwest headlines will be getting national television exposure with an appearance on “Dateline NBC” tentatively set for Friday.
“Dateline” will chronicle the case of Frederick Russell, including how he became the only drunken-driving suspect to land on the U.S. Marshal’s 15 Most Wanted list.
Russell fled to Ireland in 2001, days before his vehicular homicide trial was scheduled to start in Whitman County, Wash. He was captured in 2005 and extradited to the United States.
Because of extensive publicity in Eastern Washington, the trial venue was moved to Cowlitz County.
On Nov. 6, a jury convicted Russell, 28, of vehicular homicide and assault charges in the June 4, 2001, multi-vehicle crash that killed three Washington State University seniors near Pullman. Three other students were seriously injured.
In January, a judge sentenced him to the maximum, 14 years behind bars.
“Dateline” cameras rolled during the entire trial.
The episode is set to air at 10 p.m. Friday on KGW, Channel 8. The date is subject to change.
