With the summer heat beating down on Cowlitz County, Three Rivers Mall’s latest eatery offers a tasty way to cool down.

Cool Scoops is an offspring of Nana’s Deli, about 50 feet away in the mall’s food court, and it’s seeking to mix the old-fashioned ice cream parlor with the tastes of today, said Mozell Miller, who owns both shops.

“It’s nostalgia with a little bit of modern,” said Miller, who opened Nana’s Deli eight years ago.

Cool Scoops opened in November, and Miller said she is planning a grand opening in August. Her granddaughter, 18-year-old Brittainey Miller, the ice cream shop manager.

The shop features Dreyer’s ice cream, Jet-Tea all-natural smoothies, Rock Star energy drinks and gourmet hot dogs. The expansion will allow Nana’s Deli to focus on its lunch and salad bar, Miller said.

“We didn’t have the space to do what we wanted,” she said.

In time, Miller said she hopes to reserve space in the mall for birthdays and other gatherings, and she’d like to add pizza to the menu.

Cool Scoops is open from 11 a.m. to to 9 p.m. On Sundays, the shop is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 578-9866.

Doughnut shop changes name

The former Winchell’s Donut House in Longview has a new name, but the doughnuts are staying the same.

The shop at 1560 15th Ave. is now a Heavenly Donuts franchise, with company headquarters in California.

Heavenly Donuts is under the same ownership and will continue to sell the same products, said owner Jose Abcun, who also owns franchises in Portland, Olympia and three in California.

California-based Yum Yum Donut Shops bought out Winchell’s in 2004, though some shops weren’t immediately required to relinquish the Winchell’s name. Abcun said he changed the franchise because he didn’t want to change to Yum Yum Donuts.

Clarification

In last Monday’s column, the new location of Hamer Electric was unclear. The business opened a new branch at 35855 Industrial Way in St. Helens, Ore. Hamer Electric is staying in its headquarters in at 126 Industrial Way in Longview.

" Wowgreat job General Growth Properties. This mall gets worse and worse. Ive lived here for 8 years and every year this mall either loses good stores or brings in one, like the one mentioned above, that dont really meet our needs. They need to rip this mall down and fire General Growth Properties and bring in a company that is better suited for Kelso. "

" ummm probably nothing for a good 2 or so years. ive noticed that in the longview/kelso area, a vacant building usually stays vacant for a while. "

" Well, they have painted it red and white, which to me, gives a pretty good indication that the building has been purchased. I know I wouldn't mind a Carls Jr. or a Sonic......heehee....but thanks, tacompton. :) "
