Poaching investigation leads state to suspend Longview nurse's license

The state took the emergency action of immediately suspending a Longview nurse’s license Monday, saying some of his comments during a poaching investigation made him an imminent threat to patients.

The action means Micky Ray Gordon, 37, cannot work as a registered nurse pending further state action. He had been employed at Providence Centralia Hospital.

This emergency suspension is the most serious move the state can take and is only done so when there’s judged to be a potential risk to patients, said Mary Dale, discipline manager with the state’s Nursing Quality Assurance Commission.

“If we feel there’s potential imminent danger to the public, we go ahead and take the license,” Dale said Tuesday.

No one has alleged Gordon harmed patients.

Still, comments he made to police and his several criminal poaching charges got the state’s attention. Gordon was investigated for poaching in April 2007 and faces criminal charges in Lewis, Wahkiakum and Jefferson counties, according to Daily News archives.

According to records from state health officials, Gordon told an undercover officer during those investigations that he:

• Hates the elderly patients he comes in contact with in his hospital job, especially the bedridden elderly patients.

• Put a dog shock collar on a child and shocked the child on high intensity.

• Mixed cough suppressant with ice cream to sedate an infant so he could pursue a sexual encounter with an adult.

• Celebrates when he hears a police officer was killed and would shoot any hatchery manager or game warden who “interfered” with his hunt.

The officer and state health officials also allege Gordon tortured his hunting dog to death in January 2007, including using two shock collars to shock the dog’s genitals and neck continuously while kicking and stomping on the dog, according to state records. The dog died shortly thereafter.

“Those issues, along with the hunting and animal cruelty allegations, have caused severe concern about his interaction with patients,” according to state news release.

Gordon could not be reached for comment on the license suspension.

Gordon, who previously had certified nursing assistant and paramedic licenses, has never had any other actions taken against his license, according to the state. He’s been licensed as a registered nurse since April 2007.

Gordon can request a hearing within 10 days on the emergency suspension. If he does not, the normal state investigative process will play out, which can take several months.

Licensed medical workers can lose their state license for any number of violations, including criminal convictions. Workers also can retain their license but be ordered to receive counseling or additional training.

" It is people like this that make me afraid to grow old. I have told my daughter many times that I do not ever want to be put in a nursing home, because of people like this. I have personally known nurses aides that were almost that cruel to their patients. Its just me, but I do not want to be put in the position where those kinds of things could be done to me,unable to fight back. Maybe he needs to experience some of the same sensations that he inflicted on those poor beings. "

I am glad that he got his license taken away. I would be appalled if I were to hear these things were said or done to any of my loved ones. I hope he gets what he deserves. And to the columbian: Bush really has nothing to do with this mans ignorance, or actions. "

And to chicklet: Please don't allow the actions of one sick individual to sway you into believing that all nursing care workers are this way....I personally know several that work in our local nursing facilites, in Longview, that have more compassion and love and genuine concern for their patients than you can imagine. " This is the kind of story that really makes me scared of aging and having to be 'cared' for by someone like this. If this guy ever gets his license there is something incredibly wrong with the system. Lock him up, with a dog shock collar on of course, and throw away the key. What a sick-o! "

local_nurse wrote on Jun 11, 2008 11:49 AM:

" I am glad that the State has suspended his license, hopefully they will revoke it for good. He also deserves to be in jail for his crimes. As for getting his license to begin with, don't forget even serial killers fool people for a while, they can portray a normal person for a period of time. I am surprised that his employers or co-workers didn't see or hear any of this though, that is what is scary. People being around him every day not knowing what is going on, or turning a blind eye to this behavior.

Don't forget, most of us care for your family as if they were our own family, with TLC. Gently and Carefully. As we would want to be cared for if we were sick and incapable of caring for ourselves. "

" I was disgusted and sickened by this article! Is anybody absolutely SURE this guy is really human?? It's too bad he can't have a taste of his own medicine---can you imagine how much his poor dog suffered before it finally died? He needs much more done than just his nursing license suspended!! "

starfire wrote on Jun 11, 2008 2:17 PM:

" If he is actually admitting to doing these things, like putting shock collars on infants, drugging babies, killing dogs, why isn't being held somewhere? If these type confessions don't qualify someone for a "Britney Spears" type involuntary hold in a mental facility (or jail) what does???? "

" As a nurse, I have a hard time understanding why this man decided to go into the nursing profession in the first place. Nursing is about caring and this man is as far away from the meaning as possible. "

lucky1 wrote on Jun 11, 2008 2:45 PM:

" I would feel the same way if the allegations were true. Knowing the individual I can tell you that they are not. The reason co-workers and family members didnt see any of this is because it didnt happen. If you read the article it says he has never had a complaint filed against him. Wouldnt this have happened in all his years in the medicle field if it were true. Its more about the game department trying to destroy someone. "

Diesel wrote on Jun 11, 2008 3:30 PM:

" RE: lucky1 . . it sounds as if you may be close to this person. If so it is understandable that you wouldn't see this side of someone. Remember many people thought Ted Bundy was a wonderful person. For you to suggest that the game department is trying to destroy someone is simply crazy. Did they force him to tell an undercover officer these things? And why would anyone tell someone they don't know things like this? If it was as a joke it clearly shows a troubled mind. Wether you want to believe it or not is up to you but for someone to make these claims, even in jest is not someone I want taking care of any of my family or friends. "

imho wrote on Jun 11, 2008 4:34 PM:

" lucky1 - If what you say is true, can you explain what happened to his dog? I agree that the alleged statements to the undercover officer seem very out of sync with his work history. However, the alleged incidents are all things that he could easily do without witnesses. Sociopaths are manipulative. And I'm not saying that he is a sociopath... but it would explain how he can act "normal" in front of friends, family, and co-workers, yet be of a different nature in reality. On the other hand, without a recording, I would not be convinced that he confessed these things to an undercover officer "

loudly wrote on Jun 11, 2008 4:45 PM:

" To tracle67, to answer your question, I would suggest that (if these allegations are true)some people don't go into nursing for the "helping" aspect of it but rather the "controlling" aspect of it. Most likely they enjoy the control they have over helpless people. Who knows what was really going on in rooms where people are left alone. Is this indicative of the nursing profession as a whole? Nope, not even a puny fraction, but every profession will have bad apples and some of those apples are really rotten. "

Poor dog!! I am sure that is not a lie. It did bring tears to my eyes. How anyone can abuse a animal needs to be locked up!! I hope animal cruelty is on his case for this one. Some one like this makes me sick!! "

Im_not_saying wrote on Jun 11, 2008 9:27 PM:

" Hey lucky1 - Myself knowing this individual I can tell you that this is just the tip of the iceberg with this freak. Whatever punishment this loser gets is far better than what he deserves. I have no idea how he passed nursing school and was working in a hospital after everything that was occurring with the torture and abuse Mick was (accused of) doing. He should be put in Guantanamo bay where he belongs! "

Sounds to me that lucky1 either didn't know him as well as she/he believed or has just been extremely lucky not to have been his victim. "

I do beleive they should prove it in court before taking away his means of supporting his family. What happened to innocent until proven guilty? How do we know the informant is a credible person? "

Im_not_saying wrote on Jun 12, 2008 2:08 PM:

" lucky1 - HE should have thought about it before doing these things. As far as the informant - read the article - it was an undercover agent. You need to pull your head out of the sand - he was probably doing these actions LONG before game agents caught on. Now he's whining because he got caught. Well whine on Mick, It wont help you! "

" I too know Mick but not in a real big way. Primarily at the ball park where my son played ball on the same team with his older son. What really disturbs me here is the potential of the harm to the young child with the shock collar. I used to watch out for his youngest son while the older one was playing. His sons are great, so I believe you need to be concerned for their welfare 1st and 2nd the truth. Error on the side of caution, however if these allegations arent true, what a way to destroy a man and his family. If they are true I am very very saddened and disgusted!!!!! Mick get on your knees and pray!!!! God Help You. "

jones18 wrote on Jun 13, 2008 10:36 AM:

" First and for most a man has to be convicted of a crime before you punish him and Mick has not be convicted of any of those staments above. I have known Mick for a couple of years and i think that he is a great man. He is loving to his family, he is a great provider, and he is all around a nice guy. I believe that this man has been slandered in an unthink about way. When all this stuff with fish and wildlife went donw they tried to slam this man and his family with everything that they could, and as you can see they still are. Mick would never say the things that they are accusing him of. The things that alot of people are writing are wrong none of you even know this man. Mick and now his great family are like all those stars in the tabloids. And the people that are saying rude comments are the writers of these tabloids. It is SAD that you BELIEVE EVERYTHING that you READ!!! If some of you people are that insane to believe everything that you read maybe you should be locked up. Open your eyes and understand that just because you watch it on tv or read it in a newspaper dose not mean that it is TRUE. Mick and family i want you to know that i STAND BEHIND you. Keep your heads held High!!! Your Friend "

Im_not_saying wrote on Jun 14, 2008 6:07 PM:

" Comparing Stars to Mick is akin to comparing apples to horse manure. Every single person that has something bad printed about him or her in this paper has a line of defense of their friends and family coming to their rescue. The facts are that Mick got himself into this mess, and his arrogance did nothing but dig a deeper hole for him to have to eventually crawl out of. The game department did not get him into this mess, he did. It wasn't like he was singled out at random. He did those things while being monitored. And instead of keeping his mouth closed he opened it and let the stpuid flow. We all make mistakes in our lives - its what we do afterwards that define us as a human being. by ignoring the truth and perverting his own sense of judgement, Mick has shown himself to only being slightly deserving of that title. If he would admit his crimes, take the punishment for them, and create a new life for himself people would not think so poorly of him. Remember - it's not the actions he did that lost him his license, rather it was what he did afterwards. "
