SEATTLE — Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels reportedly plans to announce restrictions on concealed weapons on city property.

The restrictions will come after a shooting at Seattle's Northwest Folklife Festival left three people wounded at the Seattle Center last month.

A news conference has been scheduled for Monday at the Seattle Police Department with Nickels, Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske and state legislators.

In a news release, the initiative was described as aimed at "making the city safer from guns."

Executive orders are directives to city departments and don't require City Council approval. They typically don't apply to the general public, but to the policies and actions of city employees, agencies and properties.

" Statistics show clearly that the knee jerk reaction of limiting our 2nd. amendment rights in the wake of an incidence like this, causes crime to go up. Disarming the law abiding good guys does not make good sense. Gun free zones only advertise to the wolves that the sheep are easy pickings. "

" For once I agree with Mayor Nickels. Concealed weapons have no place on city property. Let's not forget, the person responsible for the shooting at the Seattle Center had a permit to carry even though he had mental issues. Makes me so confident in the process... "

" Statistics show that individuals with concealed carry permits are less likely to commit crimes, including violent crimes, that non-permit holders. Take guns out of the hands of licensed, responsible people so only those who don't abide by the laws have them. Yep, I can sure see how that's going to reduce crime. "

" Uh, Sea-gal. Where did you get your data that "the person responsible for the shooting at the Seattle Center had a permit to carry"? I looked for that information and did not find it. If you are correct than I agree. Someone screwed up by giving a C-C permit to a mentally unstable individual. If your just assuming that he had one just because he had an ankle holster, than it would be irresponsible for you to write that in as fact. "

" Well, since State law is preempts local law, this really does nothing except forbid city employees (who weren't responsible for the shooting) from carrying guns at work.

"...Local laws and ordinances that are inconsistent with, more restrictive than, or exceed the requirements of state law shall not be enacted and are preempted and repealed, regardless of the nature of the code, charter, or home rule status of such city, town, county, or municipality."

So, more feel good knee jerk reaction from a very liberal mayor with no regard for the law. "

" Uh, Real American, here is a link to the information: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2004447192_folklifeshooter30m.html. I am a gun owner, BTW, and would never assume someone has a permit to carry just because he's wearing an ankle holster. I try real hard not to make things up.... "

" The full article does indicate the person had a valid CCW. However, like anything, some people will abuse the system, and, as usual, the liberal way is to punish EVEYONE!!! However, I will happily challenge this executive order. "
