Unusual prowlers take an early-morning stroll down 30th Avenue

Longview resident Randy Long is accustomed to a little commotion across the street from his rental home on 30th Avenue. A line of trees blocks his view of the centerfield fence of the R.A. Long High School baseball field, but he still hears the “ping” of metal bats and the shouts of fans and players.

Long encountered an entirely different sort of commotion, though, when he peered out his window around 4:30 a.m. Thursday and noticed a Longview police patrol car parked across the street facing north with its brake lights glowing.

Long thought it odd because of the hour, and “when they’re trying to catch speeders, they usually park down the block” at Olympic Elementary School.

Then a second patrol car arrived and the officer aimed its spotlight into the trees behind the ball field.

“I thought they were chasing someone,” Long said.

After a few minutes, the first car pulled away slowly. Then the second car headed off in the opposite direction.

Curious, Long stepped out of his house, crossed his front lawn and stood on the sidewalk. It was still dark, but the street light above was on.

Then he heard a rustling across the street.

“Two giant elk just burst out of the trees,” Long said. “They just bounced out and stopped.”

One had “huge” antlers, Long said, and the other was a cow. With nothing but the street between himself and the elk, Long froze.

“They were looking at me, and I was looking at them. I think they were just as startled as I was. It was a shock to us both.”

Longview Police Detective Doug Kazensky said police received a call at about that time of two bull elk creating a traffic hazard at the intersection of Ocean Beach Highway and Nichols Boulevard.

Kazensky said he didn’t think the two graveyard shift officers ever saw the animals, but they were put on alert for them.

“We get calls about loose horses, cattle, deer. I don’t ever recall an elk running through town in the 10 years I’ve been here,” Kazensky said.

Long said that after a few tense moments, the elk took off south down 30th Avenue, toward the school. When they got to the school, Long says they scared off a dog, which sped away from the elk.

“Those things sounded like a herd of elephants,” Long said.

Long watched the animals continue down 30th Avenue for several minutes “until they just faded out of view. The last I saw of them, they were almost to the Hemlock Store.”

A few minutes later, a car came down the street toward the elk, but the driver didn’t appear to notice anything.

“Of all the places to see elk,” said Long, who’s lived at his current residence for four years. “A deer, maybe. But two giant elk? I just wish I’d had a camera.”

Long said he wasn’t surprised the officers drove away. Given the hour, they probably just thought the elk would move on out of town before most people had awakened, he said.

“I mean, what are they gonna do?”

" That's what happens when you rip out there habitat. A herd of about 80 elk have been living in the forest behind Cascade elementary. Now with the new subdivision goin in, they have nowhere to go. Good work developers.
Why are we building more haouses anyway? "

" Hey Scoob, the elk like it in town. Besides, the reason we build houses is so people have a place to live. The elk will be fine. But if you ever get hungry, elk steak is pretty darn tasty.
My name is DW and I approve of this messege. I also support PETA, (People Eating Tasty Animals) :) "

" It makes me sick to see these animals end up in situations like this due to humans invading thier habitat. DW! If you haven't noticed all the houses sitting empty, you may want to take a drive around town sometime soon. Humans do not need anymore housing right now. Developers just want to make money. What I can't believe is that the police would just leave two elk in that area of town. That is just irresponsible. "

" I lived in Anchorage Alaska for a number of years. Every year moose come into the city and live in residential areas. I have seen large bull moose in downtown Anchorage. People and animals can co-exist in harmony. If anything needs to be shot, it would be dogs that irresponsible owners allow to run loose and chase wildlife. So just chill out, people. Learn to live in peace and harmony with nature. "

" Kitten, buy a map and take a history lesson, there have been people living where those elk were on 30th for 80 years. Cascade Middle School is very near 50 years old. We have to live somewhere, I live in downtown Longview like where tthe elk were. What makes me sick is when people sound off like you and don't have even the first idea about what they are talking about. "

" to Kitten - what were the cops supposed to do? Back up the trailer and load them up? Moving them would have required a vet, tranquilizers, lots of people to lift them, a trailer, etc. That's just not feasible in the middle of the night. "

" If you think the elk startled Mr. Long, just think how startled if it were a couple of human prowlers that popped out of the bushes and starred him in the eyes. Myself, I would have been relieved to see the animals instead. "

" I like city elk, they are easier to hunt. Last yr I actually had to go into the woods to kill em. "

kitten wrote on Jun 1, 2008 7:17 PM:

" Cheney 119. YOu make no sense! Elk are not usually living on 30th so there is some mechanism that is in place that sent them there. As far as us having to live somewhere! How about living in on of the many empty houses out near 50th? Maybe YOU should get a map and head to one of the many empty developments in "anywhere USA". Most developments are like ghosttowns right now.

To citizen_Jane . That is exactly what I expected them to do. The human mentality that you have is why the wildlife is suffering. Would it be "feasible" if it were you who were scared to death and running amongst the cars trying not to get hit?????? "

" It makes me sick to see these animals end up in situations like this due to humans invading thier habitat. Invading their habitat? People have lived on 30th since 1924, I think we can classify this as people habitat now. Actually this time of year most of the valley floor was underwater and it was fish habitat. As for the mechanisms that motivate elk to come and go Kitten maybe we should get an animal psychologist to examine the elk and the kitten. We could ask the elk how they feel about that? Why don't you just admit you don't know what you're talking about, wildlife or real estate. "

kitten wrote on Jun 2, 2008 5:54 AM:

" Cheney 119! Of course the elk don't "live" on 30th. They most likely came down from the Cascade area where they are building another huge human hive that most likely will sit empty. Have you heard about a little thing called the "HOUSING BUBBLE"? Might want to check into it. And are you saying that humans may not have an impact on the reasons animals move from place to place? That is pure ignorance.

Scooby. Thanks, I feel much better. And it looks like this time the elk probably did make it back out of town without any incident. My main thought about the police doing something was for both human and animal safety. I sure wouldn't want to be a small child that inadvertently got between a bull elk and their escape route. Or an adult either for that matter. "

mole wrote on Jun 2, 2008 5:38 PM:

" the police did the right thing,at that time the animals posed no danger to them or anyone and was out of the area before kitten even woke-up why think what could happen when nothing did, just animals looking over the hedge. "
