The Kelso High fastpitch softball team punched its ticket to yet another state tournament during the weekend by winning three of four games at the Bi-District Tournament at Sprinker Field in Tacoma.
The Lassies, champions of the Greater St. Helens 3A League and District 4, open the Class 3A state tourney at 1 p.m. Friday against Mount Vernon at the South End Recreation Area fields in Tacoma.
Crystal Nyman picked up all three pitching victories for the Lassies. In Friday’s opener against Mount Rainier, a 1-0 win, Nyman pitched a perfect game — 21 batters up, 21 batters down with 17 strikeouts.
Later on Friday, the Lassies lost to Enumclaw 2-1 on a run in the seventh inning. Sophomore Jenna DeRosier allowed one earned run and struck out nine in a complete-game effort.
Nyman went back to work Saturday in a 1-0, nine-inning win against Auburn, striking out 18 more. Lindsay Mayeda singled in pinch-runner Alyson Dillehay with the winning run in the ninth for the Lassies.
Jamie Bolin finished 3-for-4 and Tailer Snow added two hits for Kelso.
Later Saturday, the Lassies notched a wild, 7-6 win over Capital in 11 innings — a marathon battle that mirrored the Kelso baseball team’s exciting regional win over Auburn in Centralia, which was happening at about the same time.
The Lassies jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but Capital came roaring back to force extra innings. DeRosier pitched 4 1/3 innings and struck out six, and Nyman came on to finish it off with 6 2/3 innings. She struck out 10.
Brittany Sanders was the star of the game at the plate (4-for-4) and in the field. Late in the contest, Sanders made a “belly-out diving catch” in left field to snuff out a Capital rally.
Bolin, Nyman and Mackenzie Southard all had two hits each for Kelso, which pulled off a successful suicide squeeze bunt in the game.
