A group of old R.A. Long High School musical buddies will reunite for a couple of concerts in the upcoming week.

On Tuesday, the Southwest Washington Symphony’s last concert of the season will include soloist Clark Potter, a 1978 R.A. Long graduate who is the professor of viola at the University of Nebraska.

He will be joined by violinist Don Kirkpatrick and guest conductor Chris Leach, who also are ‘78 R.A. Long grads, on Mozart’s Concertante for violin, viola and orchestra.

The choirs from R.A. Long, Mark Morris and Kelso high schools and the Columbia Choral Ensemble will join the symphony for three choral selections by Gwyneth Walker: “Peace I Ask of Thee, O River,” “Crossing the Bar” and “How Can I Keep from Singing.” The choirs also will sing “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

The symphony’s program also will include “Les Preludes,” a symphonic poem by Listz.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the R.A. Long High School auditorium. The concert is being held there rather than at the Columbia Theatre because the school’s stage is larger. A pre-concert talk by Ryan Heller will start at 7 p.m.

Tickets cost $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors. Admission is free for middle schoolers and younger.

Potter also slated for chamber music event

Clark Potter also will perform during Chamber Music Southwest Washington’s final recital of its first season. The concert will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Stephen’s Parish Hall, located at 22nd Avenue and Louisiana Street.

Potter will join fellow R.A. Long graduates violinists Don Kirkpatrick and Steve Meharg, along with their former orchestra teacher, Ray Clithero, in Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet

Completing the quintet will be cellist John Brecher, who also will perform works by Schubert and Bernstein with soprano Barbara Futrell and pianists Pat Baker and Tim Janke.

There is no admission charge.
