A 29-year-old Longview man died early this morning, either from the impact of his car into a power pole or from drowning after the car flipped on its top into a slough, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Trooper Dave Bourland said Nathan J. Thomas was driving a Honda Civic on Industrial Way when it struck a power pole near Memorial Park Drive.

A passer-by reported the car in the slough around 5:30 a.m. The roadway was reopened by 8:10 a.m.

It has not been determined what caused the accident. The investigation is continuing, Bourland said.

Let them grieve wrote on May 8, 2008 11:21 AM:

" Can we please just let the family of this man grieve without placing blame on anyone at this point? There are so many different things that could have caused the crash. An animal in the roadway or excessive speed, none of that matters right now. Most people want to figure out where to place the blame and it is just not necessary right now. A loss is a loss. The family needs our prayers. "

" You are a sad individual. If you really feel that your comments on this blog are appropriate then that is your problem. Also, if you are so concerned about wasting tax money then perhaps you should get off the couch and get involved in local politics yourself. My thoughts go out to the family and friends of this person who was involved in the wreck. Please pay no attention to the bloggers, especially "neighbor." "

" I am so sorry that this has happened. My prayers are with the family and friends of Nathan. I used to drive Industrial Way every day to and from work! The road is simply not safe. There are too many pot holes and not enough guardrails. I am always terrified that someone will try and pass me and cut it too short and push me into the slough! Something needs to be done so there are no more innocent lives lost. "

Sympathy wrote on May 9, 2008 6:53 AM:

" Thank you Stephanie for speaking up about the respect for eachother. I don't know Nathan, but I can tell you, if this was my son, or my friend, or a family member, i would be appauled at the comments that some of you make. This is not about passing judgement on what happened, but to give your condolences for a mother that just lost her son, or an aunt that lost her nephew and a family who lost a very young child... not to dispute back and forth about your thoughts. I am very sorry to hear of this tragedy and my prayers go out to all of you that knew Nathan. I can tell you that a tragic accident is no way to lose a loved one, as I also have lost a grandmother to a car accident and it is very difficult! It's never easy to lose someone you love, but your support system will help you through your rough times! Please know that there ARE loving people in this world and those that have a heart will be praying for all of you!!!

sad wrote on May 9, 2008 7:11 AM:

" My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. No matter what the cause it is a tragic end. The vehicle was heading west and crossed over the east bound lanes into the slough. If there was guard rail there maybe he would have survived but then again he might have deflected into oncoming traffic. We will never know. All we know is a young man's life ended way too early and his family grieves. "

Gena wrote on May 9, 2008 8:46 AM:

I hadn't seen him for like a year, until last week where I ran into him at Home Depot and we gave eachother a big hug, a hug I will cherish forever. He will be greatly missed and my prayers go out to his family. P.S. He's in heaven with Derek. "

" I want to thank each,& everyone of you for all of your support,& prayers. I'm Nathans cousin. I lived with Nate & Kurt for the past 5 yrs.. In that time we became very close. He was a wonderful person. He touched so many people in many different ways. Because of his loving heart, an account has been opened at Fiber Credit Union in his name to help his family pay for the unexpected expenses. As for the ones that have the cold hearts, I truely pray for each of you not to have to deal with a tragedy like my family has had to deal with! "

" Today Nathan J.Thomas Was put to rest. Another ANGEL has received his wings. Nathan & Kurt were a special part of my life and will always be in my heart. May God be with the familys a friends of Nate. You are in my prayers. At the services I read a poem that I wrote for my brother about 23 yrs. ago when he passed on. Like Nathan, he lacked about 2 months of being 30. I'm going to post it her today for those that could not make the services and for the ones that did. I hope you all can find some peace and comfort in it. "IN MEMORY OF NATHAN JOHN THOMAS"-July 6,1978 ~ May 8,2008
On this earth you once walked with us, you talked and laughed with us. You gave us your love, and we gave you ours
Now we give you back to God...For it was he who gave you to us. It was he who permitted you to walk, and talk,to laugh, and to love with us.
Life is eternal,Love is immortal, and death is a horizon of our earthly sight. So In our hearts, you'll always be,and in our minds we'll never forget you...May you rest in peace my sweet Angle Nathan. With Love and kisses to the wind. "

" Nate was one of my great friends who at any time you knew you could count on no matter what it was. He helped build my motor in my show truck, but never got to see it finished until yesterday. I drove it to the crash site and I would like to believe I took his soul for a drive. I can't believe he's gone, his dad gave me the news yesterday, I was blown away. Nate always had a smile and positve things to say something I will carry with me every day, GOD BLESS YOU NATHAN RIP BUDDY YOUR FRIEND SHANE. "
