KENT — Trevor May pitched a complete-game three-hitter and Spencer Downs belted a three-run homer to lift Kelso past Lindbergh 10-0 in five innings Tuesday in a Class 3A Bi-District baseball tournament loser-out game at Russell Road Park.

May, the Greater St. Helens 3A League Player of the Year, struck out eight and walked none in his first appearance since losing to Columbia River last week in the district title game.

"Trevor was in total command tonight from the beginning of the game to the end," Kelso coach Scot Meeker said. "He came out and set the tone for us. We had a great first inning."

On the eighth pitch of the game, Downs hit a home run that scored Phillip Cadwell and Jesus Morgan for a 3-0 lead.

Downs finished with three hits and four RBIs. Cadwell had four hits and two runs scored, and Morgan, Kelly Rice and Nate Nyman had two hits apiece.

Kelso plays the loser of Auburn-Timberline at Kent-Meridian at 7 p.m. tonight.

Gehring sparks Bulldogs

WINLOCK — Castle Rock split its first two Southwest 1A District tournament games Tuesday, beating Montesano 4-2 and losing to Tenino 9-1.

Dustin Hamilton hurled the first six innings of the Montesano game, striking out 11 and giving up five hits. Drew Pettit struck out the side in the seventh.

"(Hamilton) did an excellent, excellent job, threw one of his best games all season," CR coach Jason Mackey said. "He kind of struggled with his breaking pitch in the first few innings, but once he established that, he was very successful."

Zack Gehring destroyed Monte at the plate, driving in all four Rocket runs on a pair of two-run homers. Mikey Murray was 2-for-4 and Kyle Karnofski was 2-for-3.

Against Tenino, Karnofski plated Brad Williamson for the only CR run. Williamson and Murray had two hits apiece. Bryce Garbe pitched four-plus innings.

"We had five errors and they made the most of those errors," Mackey said. "We left a lot of guys on base."

The Rockets host Rainier, Wash., in a loser-out game at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Rainier is the No. 4 seed from the Evergreen Division and CR is the No. 2 from the Trico.

Tigers sweep Columbians

CLATSKANIE — Rainier lost Tuesday's Lewis and Clark 3A League baseball opener to Clatskanie 13-8 in 11 innings, then dropped the second game 7-2.

With Garrett Karnoski pitching, Rainier had built an 8-2 lead going into the seventh inning of the first game, but the Tigers started hitting Drew Patterson just in time and were able to tie.

Jon Wright finished the game on the mound for Rainier. The Columbians' top hitter was Jesse Renoude (3-for-5).

Rainier pitcher Daryl Paddock started the second game, and Riley Tripp took over just before it ended in darkness in the sixth. Wright and Dalton Earlywine both had hits.

The Columbians (10-3 league) host Warrenton in a doubleheader on Friday.

The Daily News did not receive a report from Clatskanie.

SOFTBALL

Sanders keys Kelso win

Brittney Sanders belted a two-out, line-drive solo home run to lift Kelso to a 1-0 victory over Castle Rock in nonleague softball at Lassie Beach on Tuesday.

"This was a perfect game for us to get ready for the district tournament," CR coach Jim Van Fleet said. "We got what we wanted out of it by facing good pitching and hitting."

Each team tallied four hits, but CR left all four of its baserunners stranded in scoring position.

"Our pitchers (Jenna DeRosier and Crystal Nyman) got into some pressure situations with runners at third with one out," Kelso coach Mike McMahon said. "It was a good gut-check for them because they didn't allow any of the runners to score."

Jamie Bolin had two hits, and Sanders added a double to lead Kelso, 12-2. DeRosier pitched the initial five innings and struck out seven before yielding to Nyman, who struck out four of the eight batters she faced.

Lacey Seidl, Samantha Watkins, Taviah' Jenkins and Samantha Moore each had a hit for CR. Watkins struck out seven and walked six batters in absorbing the loss.

"Sam threw a lot of outside pitches and tried to get Kelso to swing at bad pitches," Van Fleet said. "Ashley Gilman (CR catcher) did a nice job keeping her calm."

Defensive standouts for CR (13-4) were shortstop Lindsay Melton, second sacker Seidl and outfielders Jenkins, Moore and Stormi Grendahl.

CR entertains Toutle Lake in a nonleague game Wednesday. Kelso plays in the Greater St. Helens 3A League title game at Fort Vancouver at 4 p.m. Friday.

Rainier takes a pair

RAINIER — Rainier squeaked by Clatskanie 4-3 in the first game of Tuesday's Lewis and Clark 3A League fastpitch doubleheader, then ran away with Game 2, 15-5 in six innings.

Mollee Schwegler stole home for Rainier's first run of the night. She also played solid defense. Raeanne Hanks hurled 11 strikeouts for the win.

Bailey Jackson went 3-for-3 with a double and a home run, and Jorden Aberle and Heather Crape had a hit apiece.

Crape threw the win in the nightcap, striking out four, and Rainier got two hits each from Hanks, Jackson, Alyssa Sutfin (double) and Jennifer Hinkle (double). Amanda Schwegler played outstanding defense at third base.

Rainier (17-5, 10-0 league) hosts its last regular-season games on Friday, a doubleheader against Warrenton.

SOCCER

Jacks ousted in shootout

TUMWATER — R.A. Long saw its soccer season come to an end here Tuesday in a 2-1, penalty-kick shootout loss to Black Hills in the Southwest Washington 2A District playoffs.

Black Hills advances to the state playoffs, and will take on Mark Morris here Thursday in a seeding game. The Wolves took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but Austin Scroggins tied it for the Jacks with a goal that had RAL head coach John Bates raving well after the match.

"He put one in from 25 yards out, a screamer, a great, fantastic shot," Bates said. "One of the best I've ever seen."

The match remained tied 1-1 through the end of regulation and two five-minute, sudden-death overtimes. RAL goalkeeper Gami Lomeli saved the first Black Hills shot of the shootout, but the Jacks misfired on their first two attempts and fell 4-2.

"Guys that usually make them just missed them," said Bates. "I can't blame anyone for this. We outplayed 'em and we had plenty of chances but we couldn't convert."

Bates noted that RAL out-shot the Wolves 10-5 in the first half.

"It's been a good year," Bates said. "We're young. Next year, we'll put teams away. I'm sad for our seniors that it is over. But that's the way it goes."
