Birds are never pregnant
This is in regard to the letter of Travis Anderberg on April 28 and the issue of a pregnant duck.
Female ducks do not become pregnant and carry their brood. They sit on their brood. They are inseminated by males. This is demeaning to fowl because they may be “heavy with egg” is ridiculous because birds are never pregnant. That’s why and how we eat chicken eggs and duck eggs.
This all relates to an “emergency vet service.” For instance, if you go to the vet school at Michigan State University for emergency treatment for your pet, the bill rings up at $100 when you go through the door. Everything that happens after that is the charge for highly professional service. Some might be medical and others surgical. But the bottom line is that it isn’t free.
Replacement cat milk and a trip to Vancouver? Why should a vet provide that when one of our fine pet shops should have it on the shelf? Give it a thought.
All things considered, give the vets a break. They make about $75,000 on average and support a clinic.
My issue with the pet lovers is, “What do you expect from animal doctors?” We are not talking about the “All Creatures Great and Small” thing. Persons with pets have painted themselves into a corner and want a cheap way out. I don’t see that’s going to happen.

Letter is thoughtful, logical
Ray Hepler’s letter of April 28 was thoughtful and logical. I was uplifted by his intelligent secularism, “Quoting Jesus.” This incisive work is available in the Kelso Public Library ,and I recommend that everyone read it.
Unfortunately, on the same day, The Daily News also published a misguided apology by David A. Cozad that defended the right of teachers in a public school to promote after-school Bible study groups. These faith-basers tend to go to any length to justify the institutional encouragement of Christianity. Teachers in our public schools shouldn’t be recommending Christianity any more than they should be promoting Islam or the Divinity of the Great Pumpkin. All these mythologies belong either in some cultural social studies segment or under entertainment: Fanciful Fiction.
When teachers or other authority figures glorify some set of primitive fantasies, they do a disservice to truth, their vocation and our society in general. This should be strictly forbidden. Politicians, of course, don’t count, but they routinely claim a belief in anything polls tell them that more than five voters also espouse.

Another agnostic
Ray Hepler mentioned a book and an agnostic. Here’s another agnostic, and another book:
Sir William Ramsey was a brilliant archaeologist of the 19th century. His area of interest was first-century Asia Minor, precisely the area written about by Luke in the book of Acts in the Bible. After 30 years of excavating ancient cities like Ephesus, Philippi and others, his opinion of Luke as an historian was that he was extremely trustworthy. That, combined with the fact that through firsthand discoveries, he was certain the gospel of Luke was written about 61 A.D., and was accepted as an accurate record of the life of Jesus by churches which were still full of eyewitnesses of Jesus, convinced him that Jesus must have lived very much as the gospels described.
Ramsey abandoned his agnosticism, and embraced Jesus Christ as the Son of God who died for his sins and rose from the dead. He wrote: “The Bearing of Recent Discoveries on the Trustworthiness of the New Testament.” It’s hard to find, but fascinating.

Making a dream come true
A huge thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who worked hard and long during this past weekend Downtown Clean-up work party. There were many citizens who thought enough of the downtown area to pitch in and make a difference. People of all ages came together under the direction of our downtown business co-ordinator and the hard-working staff at the BRIT. What an outstanding effort.
Thanks to you who participated with the many hours of service. You showed that we really do care about our community and we are willing, as citizens, to improve our image. Thanks to the Chamber for stepping up with an action plan. You all make the dream come true. Thank you all.

Trashing the country
Okay, so I now see what big corporation and the politicians’ agenda is: to make America a toxic dump site. Jobs are being eliminated by being sent to foreign countries, there is no decent medical/dental/vision care without it costing a fortune, Social Security is being spent unwisely on everything except those who earned it, taxes are being collected from only those who are not rich, our democracy is no longer a true democracy. And now we are shipping toxic waste across the ocean so that it can be dumped here?
That leaves just those of us who are not running the country and cannot afford to move to another country here to contend with a land that is going to be nothing but toxic waste. Does this sound like a science fiction movie or what?
I absolutely and positively refuse to conserve water in this area as long as Longview continues to dump millions of gallons of water down the storm drains when they flush the hydrants. Am I the only one infuriated by this? I have had clothes ruined in the washing machine by the brown water they bring up. I have had to throw away food that I was preparing because I did not have the water to finish. I cannot imagine how many filters for hot water tanks, refrigerators, etc. have been ruined by that awful dredge.
