ASTORIA — Ilwaco, the smallest school in Monday's 12-team Seaside Invitational at Astoria Country Club, rode a red-hot medalist round of 72 from freshman Ryan Kukula to win the stormy event.

The Fishermen had 312 strokes, far outdistancing Scappoose's 342 and Seaside's 344.

Kukula shot a 40 on the front nine, then carded a 32 with five birdies on the back.

"The weather was horrendous at the country club. Very, very rough," Ilwaco coach Dan Whealdon said. "Five birdies in those conditions, it was unbelievable. He buckled down and took on the elements."

The Fishermen's Jack Whealdon took third place overall with a 75, and Patrick Whealdon tied for fourth with a 79. Todd Oakes shot 86 and Tyler Johnson added a 95.

Despite having no seniors, Ilwaco's top five will all compete in the prestigious Egbers Invitational at Skagit Valley Country Club on Friday, a one-day 36-hole event open only to state qualifiers.
