Longshoremen should finish unloading 6,700 tons of sand contaminated with depleted uranium and lead Tuesday afternoon, said Chad Hyslop, spokesman for the disposal company American Ecology.
The BBC Alabama arrived at the port Saturday afternoon with the 306 containers carrying the contaminated sand from Camp Doha, a U.S. Army base in Kuwait. The sand was packaged in bags designed to transport hazardous waste.
Half of the containers will be loaded onto 76 rail cars and transported to an American Ecology disposal site in Idaho. The other half will remain at the port until the trains return to haul them to Idaho. The containers all will be at the disposal site in Idaho within 15 to 30 days, Hyslop said.

Oh, and how many fish kills have happened or are happening as I type as the result of the ship's passage through the worlds' oceans and sitting in our little port?
Watched a special about how badly the US govt contaminated their US base in the Philippines (before vacating.) Deformed & dead babies/children continue being born and dying young. Many more times the death rates of cancers, etc., etc., etc., Unusable water sources and inedible fishes. The Kuwaities took a page from their book and that's why we're bringing this silent killer sand back to put into our ground - AND sit in our port, killing our fish and contaminating the air that we all breathe, the food that we eat and the water that we drink. If this catches on, considering the US has @ 160 US bases in foreign countries, there aren't enough radioactive dump sites to hold all the radioactive waste, because we already have 6000 bases here in the US and our territories. Where's that stuff going? Do we know? Do we want to know?
Every employee at the dock should be given paid leave to ameliorate their rate of exposure to this stuff. Does anyone care? When will we, the people of this country take it back from the corporatocracy that has turned her into a failed fascist state?
At the rate our planet and its environments are being poisoned, the deliberate disappearance of the middle class (via job outsourcing; foreclosures; bankruptcies; skyrocketing medical costs; high oil costs), immeasurable debt to foreign nations on which we can just barely pay the daily interest, devaluation of the fiat dollar, food shortages which will soon initiate food wars and let's not forget this administration's penchant for never ending (& expensive) invasions and wars (at $341.4 million per day for Iraq.) Oh, and it looks like Iran is next. Our total national debt is @9+ Trillion Dollars. The FBI reports that government corruption is up 50% from last year while corporate corruption is up 80%. For these reasons and too many more to recite here, we are past the tipping point and are doomed.
