The Cowlitz Game & Anglers was recently awarded a $100,000 grant from the Washington State Firearms & Archery Recreation Range Program, paving the way for construction of a new public shooting range near Castle Rock.
The range will be built on 80 acres of the county-owned 320-acre Toutle River dredge spoil site, about a half-mile east of Exit 52 on Interstate 5. The range will serve public shooters from Woodland to Toledo.
In the first phase of the construction, Cowlitz Game & Anglers - a National Rifle Association affiliated club - will build a 300-yard combination rifle/pistol range with 24 shooting positions, an American Trap range, 100-yard archery range, fencing, roadways, parking spaces and portable toilets.
Berms, baffles and other elements will be added to prevent stray bullets from exiting the property. Three-sided covered firing lines will have noise reduction walls and ceilings with noise abatement insulation.
Future phases will include additional range opportunities out to 500 yards, an added trap field and a training building for hunter education classes, Scout meetings and women's defense classes, among other things.
CG&A, along with citizens of Cowlitz County, will make available $101,600 in donations of cash, equipment, labor and materials. The total estimated cost of Phase I is $201,600.
There were 17 applications submitted in the current cycle of the Firearms & Archery Recreation Range Program. Each project went through an evaluation process prior to being recommended for funding.
Funding for the FARR Program comes from a portion of the fee for concealed weapons permits. CG&A will leverage local contributions of $101,600 with FARR grant monies to implement this project.

How much of that money can they use for the coming lawsuits can they spend. They have not even started to see what the county and the club will face in the years to come. What a dream Mr. Miller, using the club for your very own name sake. They will wise up soon. "
