Three groups opposed to NorthernStar’s liquified natural gas project on the Columbia River are taking their fight to a state land-use agency and to the voters of Clatsop County.
Conservation, business and property-rights groups on Friday submitted legal papers with the county requesting a ballot measure referendum to overturn the county’s LNG land-use approval for the Bradwood Landing terminal site 20 miles east of Astoria.
The groups said they also filed a legal challenge based on county and state zoning law with the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals.
The county recently decided to open all land zoned for parks, recreation and open space to major gas pipeline construction. The proposed referendum would ask voters if they support that decision or if they support retaining existing county law that prohibits pipelines through park lands, thus overturning the county’s decision.
The terminal would include a pipeline that could cross under the Columbia River and much of Cowlitz County.
The groups involved are The Columbia River Business Alliance, Columbia Riverkeeper and Northwest Property Rights Coalition.
