Spuds mash R.A. Long
Ridgefield slipped past R.A. Long 4-3 in a Greater St. Helens 2A League fastpitch game Wednesday at RAL, dropping the Lumberjills to 5-2 overall.
Their superiority on the mound delivered the game to the Spudders as R.A. Long struck out 12 times to Ridgefield's four.
The Jills did produce eight hits. Mira Hobson and Kiana Mawae nailed two doubles apiece, and Baily Harris added two singles.
"We were playing catch-up, but I was really proud of the girls because they never gave up," RAL coach Jennifer Godinho-Hefley said. "We basically lost because of a lack of mental toughness and some early season errors."
The Lumberjills have another shot at Ridgefield on Friday, this time on the road.
Ducks cage Huskies
TOUTLE - Rachel Dahlman whiffed 13 Morton batters as Toutle Lake pounded the Huskies 12-2 in six innings in a Central 2B League fastpitch game Wednesday.
Dahlman hurled a complete game, and Dahlman and Janae Wall drove in three runs each. Chelsea Olver finished 3-for-3 for the Ducks.
Toutle Lake (4-2, 2-1 league) travels to Wahkiakum today for a doubleheader.
BASEBALL
Sloppy Jacks fall, 5-1
The spring break layoff was unkind to the R.A. Long baseball team, which committed five errors and issued six walks while stumbling through a 5-1 loss to Ridgefield in Greater St. Helens 2A League baseball action Wednesday at the Lumberyard.
"It was a very disappointing effort. We gave the game away," said RAL coach Jason Castro. "It was our first game back after spring break. I thought we were ready to go, but we sure looked rusty."
Two of the Spudders' five runs were earned as Kevin Fritz and John Woolsey connected for solo home runs to lead off the first and sixth innings, respectively, against Lumberjacks starter Kyle Wika (three hits allowed, five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings).
"Kyle didn't get much defense behind him," Castro said.
Dane Cheatley was 2-for-4 and drove in the lone run for RAL (4-3, 2-1 league), which travels to Washougal today.
Columbians clobber CG
PORTLAND - Daryl Paddock launched a home run as Rainier smoked Catlin Gabel 16-3 in a five-inning blowout Wednesday in Lewis and Clark 3A League baseball action.

RAL coach Helen Donovan praised her second singles player, Katie Madison, for going three sets in "a long, tough, hard-fought match."
The Jills (2-2, 1-0 league) continue a suspended match against Washougal at home today.
Tough River tops Kelso
VANCOUVER - Columbia River's high-powered girls tennis lineup dominated Kelso 5-0 on Wednesday, preventing the Lassies from winning even one set.
"They are really good, even better than they've been in most years," Kelso coach Mike Skeie said.
Michelle Slind, Kelso's third singles player, lost her first game 6-0, but put up a good fight in the second game, a 6-4 loss.

Kelso, Bay play to 1-1 tie
VANCOUVER - Kelso's first shot found the net, but Hudson's Bay escaped with a 1-1 tie in Wednesday's Greater St. Helens 3A League boys soccer game.
Derek Bobadilla had the assist on Julian Olivas' goal 15 minutes into the game, and defender McKehen Wheeler also earned high praise from Kelso coach John Fromdahl.
"(Wheeler) was all over the field for us, really our heart and soul," Fromdahl said. "We had a couple defensive errors that hurt us, but the guys came back and played a much better second half. We had a lot more possessions and more opportunities."
The Hilanders (2-3-2, 0-1-1 league) host Union on Friday.
