Area Roundup: Ilwaco speedster turns heads at invite

KENT, Wash. - Ilwaco's Matt Kaino ran the second-fastest time in the state among Class 1A athletes after winning the 400 at the Kent-Meridian Invitational track meet Saturday.

Ilwaco was the lone Class 1A school at the meet dominated by Class 3A and 4A schools. Kaino won the 400 in 50.63 seconds, and was fourth in the 200 at 23.54.

Stephen Berglund bettered his personal-best by 25 seconds in the 3200 with a fifth place finish in 10:12.5, and Eddie Knick was eighth in the high jump at 5-feet-4.

In the girls meet, Ilwaco's Anna Gerke was sixth in the discus at 75-feet-7, and Cameo Ulbricht was seventh in the 800 at 2:37.71.

LCC sweeps Pierce

LAKEWOOD, Wash. - Lower Columbia College opened its NWAACC Western Division baseball schedule in grand fashion as the Red Devils swept Pierce 8-2 in the opener and 3-2 in the 10-inning nightcap Sunday.

Jett Hart put the Devils ahead 2-1 in the top of the third inning of the opener with a two-run double, and Luke Zirkle added a two-run triple in the fifth. Zirkle was the lone LCC player with two hits.

Tyler Lichty pitched five innings for the victory before yielding to reliever Michael Greene.

Brooks Lindsley was the hero in the nightcap as he drilled a two-out, RBI triple to right field that plated the winning run in the top of the 10th inning.

LCC scored twice in the fourth inning on RBI singles from Bas Nooij and Alex Lovell, and Pierce countered with solo tallies in the sixth and eighth innings.

LCC visits Tacoma Saturday, and entertains the Titans at 1 p.m. Sunday.
