VANCOUVER - Talia Hamer ignited a six-run fourth inning to break up a scoreless tie, and Mark Morris left the rest up to Kayli Johnston as the Monarchs routed Hockinson 12-0 in six innings on Monday in a Greater St. Helens 2A League fastpitch game.

Johnston pitched a three-hitter and struck out 10 for Mark Morris (3-1, 1-0 league), which added two more runs in the fifth for an 8-0 lead and four more in the sixth to complete the rout.

Jessica Johnson (3-for-4, run scored), Hamer (3-for-4, two runs) and Christy Polis (1-for-3, two runs) led the MM offense.

The Monarchs host Hockinson again Wednesday at their new on-campus field, then host R.A. Long on Friday.

On Saturday, Johnston twirled a three-hitter and struck out 14, but Mark Morris came out on the short end of a 1-0, eight-inning decision against Hudson's Bay in nonleague action.

Bay's leadoff hitter in the bottom of the eighth reached base on an error, and later moved to third when the next two batters walked. The next batter hit an infield grounder, but the runner at third beat the throw to the plate.

"The umpire said our catcher pulled her foot off the plate, so the runner was safe at home," MM coach Mitch Stanberry said. "It was a very questionable call."

Polis had two of MM's four hits.

Pirates maul Mules

CATHLAMET - A tough Adna squad rolled to a 13-1 victory over Wahkiakum in a Central 2B League fastpitch game Monday.

Courtney Helms, Halie Boyce and Paige Kehrli played well defensively for the Mules (2-1, 0-1 league), while pitcher Shelby Deaton went six innings.

Helms and Evelyn Clark had the only hits for Wahkiakum.

Rockets rock Ducks

TOUTLE - The defending state champion Castle Rock fastpitch squad picked up its first victory here Monday, and did so in a big way.

The Rockets' offense came alive against rival Toutle Lake for a 17-3 nonleague victory.

Kayleigh Klingberg (two triples, one RBI) and Stormi Grendahl (two doubles, triple, four RBIs) each went 4-for-5 for Castle Rock (1-2).

Sophomore Danielle Nevers had more than enough offensive support as she pitched the win, scattering four hits and one walk while striking out six.

The Rockets scored four runs in the first inning and capped the win with a 6-spot in the top of the seventh on "station-to-station hitting," CR coach Jim Van Fleet said.

Lindsay Melton substituted into the game in the fifth inning and went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored for the winners. Lacey Seidl was 2-for-4 with a double and Samantha Watkins 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs.

"What a relentless line-up, up and down," Ducks coach Mark Benson said of the Rockets.

Defensive standouts for the Rockets included catcher Ashley Gilman, and outfielders Taviah' Jenkins and Brooke Adams.

Janae Wall had two hits, including an RBI triple, and Geri Wuollet cracked an RBI double for Toutle Lake (1-2).

Castle Rock visits La Center on April 8, and the Ducks host Napavine today.

Lassies roll by Heritage

Jenna DeRosier pitched the win in Kelso's 7-1 defeat of Heritage on Saturday at Lassie Beach.

DeRosier allowed one earned run on four hits and struck out 11 in six innings of work. Crystal Nyman struck out the side in the seventh.

Kelli Snyder (2-for-2) and Jamie Bolen (double) were Kelso's top hitters. Andrea DeRosier, Jenna DeRosier, Nyman and Mackenzie Southard also had hits.

Kelso (2-1) visits W.F. West today in another nonleague matchup.

Jills rally past Beavers

Myra Hobson scored the winning run on a passed ball in the seventh inning, and junior pitcher Baily Harris struck out 15 as R.A. Long slipped past Woodland 2-1 in a Greater St. Helens 2A League fastpitch game Monday at RAL.

Christina Driscoll of the Jills scored in the first inning off a Kiana Mawae double. Harris helped her cause by ripping a pair of singles for RAL (4-1, 1-0 league).

BASEBALL

Jacks outlast Woodland

Willie Kubin drilled a two-run double down the left-field line in the sixth inning to give R.A. Long the lead, and Kyle Wika pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to notch the win as the Lumberjacks defeated Woodland 8-6 in a Greater St. Helens 2A League baseball game Monday at the Lumberyard.

"Woodland came out very intense and ready to play," RAL coach Jason Castro said. "Fortunately, we got some key hits late and Kyle Wika did a great job for us," RAL coach Jason Castro said. "I can't say enough about him. He bailed us out of a big jam."

The Lumberjacks (3-1, 1-0 league) allowed four runs with two outs, on just one hit, in the fourth inning, and later trailed the Beavers 6-5 entering the bottom of the sixth.

Scott Pisapia got the rally started with a walk, and Trevor Sweet followed with a sacrifice bunt that went for a single. Carl Johnson moved Pisapia and Sweet into scoring position with another sac bunt, and Kubin ripped his double for a 7-6 RAL advantage.

Kubin later scored on a passed ball.

Edwin Frauenfeld made his first pitching appearance of the season and allowed four hits, two earned runs and walked none in 3 2/3 innings. Wika was superb in his stint, surrendering one hit and one walk.

Kyle Helem (2-for-3, RBI) and Pisapia (2-for-2, two runs) were the top hitters for the Jacks, who travel to Corvallis today for a 4 p.m. nonleague game against Lebanon, Ore., at Oregon State University's home diamond.

Minium carries Monarchs

HOCKINSON - Matt Minium was absolutely dominant - and economical.

Mark Morris' senior right-hander did not allow a baserunner to advance beyond second base in shutting out Hockinson 3-0 here Monday in a Greater St. Helens 2A League baseball game.

Minium allowed only three hits, struck out seven and, to head coach Joe Bair's delight, walked none.

"He did a great job working the inside half of the plate," Bair said. "He only threw 86 pitches."

Justin Waldher (2-for-3) tripled and scored on a single by Jeray Key to give MM a 1-0 lead in the third inning, and another run scored on a passed ball. Key (2-for-3) added his second RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Kyel Lambert went 2-for-2 for the Monarchs (3-2, 2-0 league), who host Hockinson on Wednesday.

Comets punish Taholah

NASELLE - Every Naselle player got at least two innings of action, and every starter had at least one base hit as the Comets blasted Taholah 24-2 in five innings here Monday in a Pacific 2B League baseball game.

Naselle (1-1, 1-0 league) scored nine runs in the first inning and nine more in the second to take control.

Nick Hines (2-for-4, three runs scored, two RBIs, double), Logan Scrabeck (2-for-3, three runs scored, RBI, double), Nathan Sultemeier (2-for-5, two doubles, two RBIs), John Hines (3-for-4, four runs scored), and Leonel Mendoza (double, three runs scored) paced the Comets' 13-hit attack.

Sultemeier gave up three hits and one unearned run while striking out four in a two-inning stint to earn the win.

Naselle visits North Beach today.

Wahkiakum edges Adna

CATHLAMET - Wahkiakum scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Mules held off Adna 9-8 in a Central 2B League baseball game Monday.

The Mules (3-0, 1-0 league) left the bases loaded in the first inning, but built an 8-5 lead going into the top of the seventh. Starting pitcher Matt Willette got into trouble, and Wahkiakum began hemorrhaging runs.

Ben Doumit came in and got the last out with runners on first and second, but not before Adna had tied the game 8-8.

Willette opened the seventh with a walk, and Blake Anderson (infield single) and C.J. Bridges (hit by pitch) also reached to load the bases. With one out, Joel Fudge walked to force in Willette with the winning run.

"It was a great game," Wahkiakum coach Kyle Hurley said. "It was just a great team effort."

Devils go 3-2 at tourney

WALLA WALLA - The Lower Columbia College Red Devils had their ups and downs while winning three of five games at the Walla Walla Baseball Tournament, which concluded Sunday.

LCC (13-5) dropped a 6-1 decision to host Walla Walla and blanked Columbia Basin 2-0 on Friday, smacked Blue Mountain 7-1 on Saturday, and lost to Columbia Basin 5-4 and slipped past Walla Walla 6-5 on Sunday.

"We're playing poorly and not paying attention to details heading into league play," LCC coach Kelly Smith said. "We're making a lot of mistakes and we have to pick it up a notch."

On Sunday, the Devils led 4-3 in the ninth inning against Columbia Basin when they lost their composure. A dropped fly ball in center field by Richie Allen, a throwing error by third baseman Taylor Schenck and a hanging curveball from reliever Conor Spink resulted in a base hit that plated both runs.

Jett Hart had two hits, Nic Shadle drilled a home run and drove in two runs, and Schenck and Bo Lybeck each hit RBI doubles.

In the Walla Walla contest, LCC trailed 5-2 entering the eighth inning when the Devils scored twice, highlighted by an RBI single from Jeremy Lorance. On Saturday, the Devils pounded out 12 hits to back the three-hit pitching of Chad Wagner and Brian Erickson. Wagner whiffed six batters through seven innings before yielding to Erickson, who gave up a hit in the final two frames.

LCC scored twice in the first inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Lorance, and took a 3-0 lead in the second capped by an RBI single from Shadle. The Devils broke open the game with a four-run third inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Schenck.

In Friday's tournament lid-lifter against Columbia Basin, the Devils scored both of their runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a run-scoring single from Luke Zirkle.
