Crews prep for 'Twilight' filming

KALAMA - Movie productions typically bring big bucks into the towns they locate in, but it's unclear what sort of economic boost the filming of "Twilight" will have on Kalama.

Aside from the school district - which received a $29,500 check from the production company for facility use, plus a donation to the student body - it appears the film crew is largely self-sufficient.

Catering is coming from a Hollywood, Calif., business and the crew is lodging in Portland, said movie publicist Peter Silbermann.

But set-up crews inside the Kalama High School gym, where some of the filming will occur next Monday through Thursday, said Friday they're spending locally.

"We will buy stuff all the time," said Catherine Kagan, an assistant with the location department, though big ticket items are purchased in Portland where there is no sales tax. She expects more than 100 people to be on-scene during filming next week.

"We already told Poker Pete's to buy more supplies for pizzas ... we buy a lot of gasoline here."

Another benefactor is the Port of Kalama, where crew members are paying to park their cars next week. Mark Wilson said "Twilight" is paying $400 a day for five days.

The movie is based on a best-selling novel by Stephanie Myer. "Twilight" will star Kristen Stewart ("Into the Wild," "Panic Room") as Bella Swan, a 17-year-old who moves from Arizona to live with her father in Forks, Wash., and meets a pale, mysterious but attractive young man named Edward Cullen.

Cullen is played by Robert Pattinson best known for his role as Cedric Diggory in the "Order of the Phoenix" and "Goblet of Fire" Harry Potter films.

Much of the filming is based in Washington, and Kagan said scenes have already been filmed at Clackamas Community College and Kadows Marina in Vancouver.

Ted Sprague, president of the Cowlitz Economic Development Council, said the movie could provide a larger economic boost to Kalama than what's immediately visible.

"If it's done well and makes Kalama look nice," it could become a tourism draw, Sprague said, noting that the movies "Goonies" and "Kindergarten Cop" turned into big draws for Astoria.

Movies also can provide a sense of pride and excitement for residents, said Mayor Pete Poulsen, who still remembers when Elvis stopped in Kalama in 1964.

"Those kinds of events do generate some interest," Poulsen said, though he hasn't heard a lot of talk about the movie around town. "It's exciting to have something like that happen in the community."

Kalama students seem to be some of the biggest benefactors. Those selected to appear as extras in the film will be paid for their time, which could help Kalama businesses.

"I'm confident that will go back into the stuff around town," Kalama Chamber of Commerce President Vic Leatzow said. He contacted a production representative about how Kalama businesses can be of service.

"I did meet with them Wednesday and they claim to be fairly self-sufficient," Leatzow said.

High school principal Mike Hamilton said filming could be extended to March 24 and 25 if needed, and crews expect to be gone by March 28.

This show of what I don't really know is pathetic and the Shannon Barnett's, Dave Walkers and Jim Suttons of the district really should check their priorities and consider not being such hypocrites. Good luck getting any productive thing done this next week at all the school facilities. "

" I am a teacher in another community but have had training in, and have given the WASL test for several years. As long as inside the classroom is undisturbed and there are no irregularities (state vocabulary for anything that would change a test for a student)then the testing should be fine. No matter what is going on in the school, as long as there is undisturbed quiet for the test period, then all should be fine. An irregularity can be as simple as a kid throwing up on their test(it's happened) to a fire alarm going off (that's happened too). All that happens then is that there is an official notation as to the irregularity and then the state "gurus" make the decision if they will count the test as scorable. At our school, it is so very small that we have noisy elementary lunches, PE, and classes practally next door to the high school. We are a little bit smaller than Kalama. So sorry to hear about the Tea, but having had to administer the WASl as I have, I wanted you to know that there are probably no worries about Kalama's WASL testing. "

" For more than just this movie I agree with Kalama Dad. This school board looks at only how things make them look, not necessarily what is in the best interest of the students. With the near 30k that the school will receive the board can then say "look what we did for the school". They in fact didn't do anything but make it a pain in the rump for the kids to get around to necessary parts of the school, the gym for one. The kids can't use for the next couple weeks so rain or shine the kids have to go outside for PE, good thing it's not winter. Also, I am sure glad I as a tax payer paid for those nice gym floors, can't wait to see what kind of condition they are left in after this chaos. 30k should fix it. As for the kids being paid for the "extras", only two Kalama kids were picked for that. The rest are with the movie or being hired from out of the area. Why not spend some money on lockers that lock or asbestos removal.
Oh yes production crew, film crew and movie stars, you are breathing asbestos. Welcome to Kalama High School! "

" Seriously, Kalama Dad, I am so sure the students are stoked that their school is being used, and what school aged child cares about state testing or whether or not they have the use of the gym for a week?? Would you cancel Christmas if you thought it would interfere with your child's ability to take a test?? Furthermore, there is nothing wrong with a school board trying to bring in a little extra money for their school. It is not trying to make themselves look good...it is for the students!!! So stop complaining and look at the benefits it is doing for the school and town. It will be something your kids will brag about to people one day and a good memory of their education. Don't ruin it for them by whining about it. "

Mrs. Edward Cullen wrote on Mar 15, 2008 10:50 PM:

" For all Kalama Dads. You should be very supportive of anything that brings more money into your economy in a small town even if it is a big city film crew. The money they spend in the town is going to be great for businesses and could create further growth should it be good filming location. Also, if there is really asbestos in the school don't you think it is more likely to be brought up when a crew of 100 has to be there for over a week? Don't you think there is a good chance that the after math of this filming may cause it to be fixed? It's just sort of funny that you are more worried about the film crew ruining a gym floor then the children that are in the school daily with this alleged asbestos. Shouldn't you be more concerned with why your tax dollars arent going to clean out the asbestos? Speaking of the gym floor, I remember the gym floor at my high school and it was pretty scratch and scuffed as is so I'm thinking that if Kalama high school is as ghetto as you make it seem with the asbestos problems and all, theres not much of a chance the filming damage the floor any worse then the condition it is already in. Even if the crew did damage the floor I'm sure Summit Films can afford to fix it. "

Mrs. Edward Cullen wrote on Mar 15, 2008 11:05 PM:

" Oh yes I almost forgot! I am really sorry that your children may have to go outside for PE for a week during filming but isn’t it better for them to be outside considering how much asbestos there is in the school. And if it is raining I’m pretty sure they wont make the kids exercise in the rain after all high school isn’t a concentration camp even when there is a movie crew filming in their gym. Oh and another thing, shouldn’t you be glad that only two kids from Kalama were picked to be extras? You wouldn’t want all those precious kids in that asbestos filled school just to get a cameo in a movie. Besides all that a movie being filmed in your high school is a good reason for your son or daughter to get up and go to school. I don’t know about you but pretty much any reason that my son or daughter would be happy about going to school is a good enough reason for me. "

Also to the Kalama Dads--when you film at a school the school does benefit. You should be happy for the students, their school is a legacy now! I understand your anger about the unbalanced priorities, but honestly, if YOU were helping to get a movie in motion by letting them use your school, I'm sure you'd cancel some other things in light of testing instead of the filming. A tourism draw? Give me a break. It'll take some work to make Kalama look "nice." Maybe the City could order homeowners to clean up some of the dumpy looking places behind the baseball fields on Date Street. Right next to a bunch of 'Hollywierd' trailors is Kalama at its finest. Yes, I'm sure the trusses, weeds, and junk cars are making a nice impression...in fact, the semi trucks are the only thing blocking the 'stunning' view.

Arkansas might have been a better location to film this movie. "

So, next August or September read the public annoucements in the classified ads of TDN. This is the only reason my kids do not attend this school and I drive them to another district. I have not seen anything about lead paint but it is probably there too. I have no feelings one way other about the movie. Just wanted to let those of you who didn't know about the asbestos that it is in fact true. Good luck Twightlight and Kalama on the movie. I hope the school board spends the money wisely. Asbestos removal would be wisely. "

Most large purchases will be made out of town, (and state, no sales tax for Kalama)the crews will stay out of town,(no motel tax for Kalama) about the only ones that will benefit is the pizza parlor and maybe a buck or two here and there. Do you have kids in the school? Tell me Mrs. Cullen if the kids don't get to watch this movie made, can't go anywhere near the sets, never see the stars to even get an autograph and there is not a lot of profit for your one horse town...who benefits? According to the kids the school doesn't even look the same after they built the sets. Parents, it is understandable that you are upset with the fact that your children will be disrupted for several days. I have a child too and I would have too many issues myself keeping her on top of her work. It is hard to get kids of the high school age to stay focused. I do, however, belive that this film will be a postitive thing. The studens, parents and other residents can believe that their part of the world has become something bigger, even if its "just a movie." Because of the books themselves, I am planning a trip to your region to see the amazing places that I have read about. It's going to be great watching the movie and seeing our school! I'm loving this! I hear an "action" or a "cut" here and there, and I've seen the set. This is such a wonderful opportunity for the community of Kalama and the students. "

I saw Bella's orange truck, my sister said "hi" to Kristin Stewart and saw the guy that'll play Edward, and businesses are getting big boosts. The one thing I'm a little irritated about is the timing. I heard that filming would take place during Spring Break, but since it's taking place this minute, the high schoolers parking is messed up and there are weird out-of-towners hanging around. Most importantly, it'll be over soon, we can smile, then go see it in the theatre. "

Although I seriously doubt that the school's admin. will put the money to good use. It will disappear into their pocketbooks, and the sports programs... what about the arts, huh, Hamilton? Sutton? What can you say about that? Will you buy more art supplies... instead of giving the art teacher $500 for the entire year(3 cents/student), why not give her more? Or more stands, or instruments for the band(we need a bassoon)? And what about the drama program? Running the director out by ganging up on her... that's just stupid and immature! It's because of you(the admin), stealing money from the drama club, ASB, and more, that there is any lack of supplies! Support the teachers, instead of making them pay out of their own pockets... you can at least show some decency and give them the money for their hard work and time! Instead of focusing on sports ONLY? There is more to KHS than sports, wake up! "

We were told NOT to go to or contact the school for the next two weeks, as this causes an interruption in the film schedule. I DON'T PAY TAXES FOR MOVIE PRODUCTION! What is the money being used for at the district level? I want a full accounting of that money. School officials and school board members worry about so many lesser "disruptions to learning" yet the entire parking structure and gyms can be taken over for this? Bring back the Grandmother's Tea in the upper grades! As for the teacher who commented on the WASL, I am a teacher, and ANY disruptions during my lead up to the WASL (Grandmother's Tea rehearsals) negatively affects my students. I pay taxes in this district, and I have 3 kids in the schools. Where are your priorities? I don't want my children losing out on learning because of some stupid film shoot. Can others waive money at the schools to disrupt learning too? The school board and superintendant should be held accountable for this mess! "

Come on, think wisely when it comes to investing in our kids! Principal Hamilton, there will be a lot of attention placed on how the Twilight money is allocated. " spending money, policy change, and overall conduct of the district and administration has recently come under fire, and this twilight business is just the icing on the cake. Policy change and mudslinging at the School board is a lost cause, the damage is already done. the school has lost so much money towards things we really could have done without. There are countless problems with the schools maintenance (holes in the ceilings and walls, ravaged lockers, and an overall lack of cleanliness) but for some reason we needed a giant electric sign saying "thank the P.T.O." for an entire districts blatant ignorance for wise cash distribution. One of my fellow students, recently organized a large student walkout, raising some very good points. Instead of making an attempt at dealing with the crowd, the administrators singled him away from the group and bullied him with accusations. what I am curious about is, there are assemblies frequently where the very thing they complained of is done constantly, that being "crowd control" why couldn't they handle the pressure of their policies being questioned? How is it that it is in some way morally wrong o question the higher powers? if these things weren't done nothing would ever be changed. One of the Administrators complained as a problem that the person who led this
walk out stated " I see you as my equal."
It is bewildering to me how that statement inflicts any slanderous, or malicious values. The administrators obviously will just never get it "

The letter from the production company is on the Kalama SD web site. It says, in black and white, NOT to contact the school except for emergencies only. The crew has bullied elementary students for overthrowing a football during recess. I have been to school board meetings, and even as a teacher, am talked down to and treated in a very condescending manner. If they treat me that way, how do they treat others who can be successfully intimidated? Bruce, you ignored me and others who had concerns about administrators over the past several years. Can't you please realize you made a mistake and move on? Others on this list will remember this at levy time. That's the only time you folks seem to care what voters and taxpayers have to say. "

VOTE NO ON BONDS AND LEVIES!!!! To heck with this bunch, let's get some new people with new ideas and prospectives. "

Don't vote for the bond, then maybe Sutton with understand the impact he has and mistakes that he has made. The process as of now is a full on joke at the school. Today was worse that yesterday and the only good thing about tomorrow is the kids will be at school, but trouble with Monday bring. Kids have a voice and rights and they should be encouraged and allowed to use them. Don't let the glamour folks take over without speaking up or out. Good luck "

The movie crew is on campus for six school days, and other than students having to park somewhere else and not walk through where they are filming at that moment, there have not been any disruptions. Classes are running normally, and students are expected to continue learning.

It is exciting that something like this is happening in Kalama. How many times does a major movie choose to film in Kalama? If you haven't read the book, you should. It's wonderful!

If this is all you have to complain about, then thank your lucky stars. Not everyone is as fortunate as you are. "

When searching for them between all the strange people and choas,As a parent think about what it feels like not knowing were your children are when you know they are supose to be. That pit in your stomache. That feeling sucks especially with all these strangers that are all around. I am all for the movie but all this should of been done during spring break. I got to give mona a big thanks because she had to show my son the direction of home cause lord knows what would of happen. I believe I got to experience that this movie was a disruption for my family. Just think us parents that aren't so lucky to have working hours as our children do like the ones that are employees of the school district have, so maybe think of a little consideration. "

" It may not be for everyone but if you homeschool your children and it is easy to do then you don't have to worry about a parking space. You get to be with your child and know where they are and what they are doing. Public school is full of bullies, drugs, and peer pressure. YES there will be pressure in the real world but the influence on our teens would be better from the parent then the other kids at school. Just think about it for a minute that we invest years in raising our kids and they go to school and learning is the last thing on their mind.(give or take a few really dedicated kids). They have to worry about clothes and the right friends. Kids have it rough at school and most of it is to fit in. My 14 year old daughter gets to go to school in her pj's if she wants and can concentrate on what is important. And since she has been homeschooling she has been getting almost 100 % on her work. She is sheltered a little but I am so glad. Her whole dimeanor has changed and she loves to be responsible on her own and learn to be self motivated. Just a thought for those unhappy about their children falling victim to bullies Take a little more time for your young person. It will payoff. "

It takes two incomes in these recession filled times just to provide security. Do you think your kids would get 100% at Kalama schools? My kids do quite well, but there's NO WAY I'd homeschool them. God Bless the teachers of the world! I'm a great mom, but there's a reason we have public schools, and filming movies isn't one of them. By the way, the WASL isn't finished, just one section of it is done. There is still a lot of preparation going on in the high school, middle school and elementary for the upcoming tests. The feds with the No Child Left Behind don't care that there's a movie affecting Kalama kids. They DO care about their scores. I hate the WASL too, but do you really think this is worth losing valuable prep time for this? Again, the feds don't care, and I sure hope it doesn't show up in the schools scores at any level. Good luck teachers. "

Moon is a disgruntled employee who has failed to follow the protocol for her issues. why? because if she actually followed through and requested an opportunity to speak with board members like she is supposed to then the meeting would actually happen and she would be held accountable for her acusations. instead her and her husband will simply shoot from the cheap seats with crazy claims of asbestos and board members obscounding with money for vacations and BMWs.
instead they complain about everything else like the track and maintenance. the district has addressed these issues and their is a plan but you would know that if they would ever actually attend a meeting. if you want to know about the track then call Nate and ask him what the plan is .
the kids loved the film and learned a lot from watching the process. the district got some money for repairs so that you the taxpayer won't havt to pay for them

Kalama has some of the best test score in the state and the district has received many awards for what the teachers students and administrtors have been able to do up on the hill. funny you should mention that the football team didn't even go to state. maybe you should do a little research and review how well they did and the record revenues that came in to support all of the other ASB programs. that field will be rented to other districts and even more money for ASB programs. Funny that you should get so childish that you stoop to picking on the local pizza parlor in town and I guess suggest that the District should have spent their money in another community. or was it a suggestion that we should have taken the pizza away from the kids to make them bitter and hatefull like you.
funny that you have not followed through and filed a formal complaint, but instead have chosen to sling mud instead of the INVESTIGATION you expect the school board to conduct. you need to file the complaint folks because the rest of the world has rules and organization instead of living in a fantasy world of hate where the school board members steal to pay for BMWs and vacations and the asbestos filled halls have untold dozens of strangers aimlessly roaming the halls.
I asked some questions about the track and guess what I got.....a plan and a good plan at that. maybe more people posting here shoul actually go attend a board meeting and work on ideas instead of the fiction going on here "

How funny I never got a call back. How about you asking Sutton why I have been avoided. I attended the meeting lastnight and apparently Sutton said he didn't get the message and all this is my fault?Like I said If these administrators and Board members wouldn't brush people off these issues wouldn't be addressed on a forum. For your accuisation on Osbestos and BMW your fasley accusing of the wrong person,My concerns are maintenance of the school that hasn't been taken care, I figure your a close friend of the administrators or one. I want to echo Bruce's sentiment that the Board is available to address any concernes parents and students may have, but would appreciate it if you woulf first allow the staff the opportunity to address the issue according to the policy and prcedure established for the District. please feel free to call and we will be more than happy to talk about the plans for the track or how the filming plans were layed out and negotiated. more importantly we would prefer to see you all at the School Board meetings each month where all of these plans are discussed.

PROTOCOLS? I would advise you to take some positive steps to helping the situation instead of internet bashing and hiding in your little closet hovering over the keyboard thinking you are making some sort of difference in the community. Why don't you try to become a school administrator? Oh thats right because first you must have a 4 year degree followed by a masters degree and then you can get into an administrative program which takes another couple of years. Oh but wait, then someone would also have to hire you. Once you were hired you would be stuffed in between Teachers, students, school board, the state, and pathetic parents who blame everything on the school. Thats a tangled web to try and keep everyone happy, sorry it seems as though it wasn't your turn this time. I would bet the good parents and responsible citizens in this community don't have much to complain about. "
