Area Roundup: R.A. Long survives CR rally on the diamond

CASTLE ROCK - After building a 7-0 lead over Castle Rock in Monday's baseball, R.A. Long escaped with a 7-5 win.

With the game scoreless in the top of the fifth, the Lumberjacks' Tyler Hudson led off with a solo home run. A string of walks allowed RAL to go up 4-0 in that inning.

RAL junior Kyle Helem hit his first home run in the sixth, and Dane Cheatley smashed a two-run double in the seventh. Junior Dale Chamberlain got his first varsity base hit.

Tyson Strand got the win on the mound in his first varsity outing, scattering two hits in three innings of scoreless relief. Levi Welch closed the game, allowing one run on no hits. The Jacks' unseasoned pitching did allow Castle Rock back onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh, when they opened with five walks and a hit batter. The Rockets were down to their last out when the game was finally called for darkness.

"We didn't execute," CR coach Jason Mackey said. "We had some very makeable plays that we didn't make. Basically, R.A. Long did all the right things to win."

Drew Pettit threw three scoreless innings for the Rockets, and Bryce Garbe and Zack Gehring hit doubles.

RAL (2-0) hosts Kelso tomorrow.

Harris shines for RAL

Paul Harris broke up Aberdeen pitcher Brian Priamos' no-hit bid with a one-out double in the fifth inning as R.A. Long rallied to topple the Bobcats 4-1 in the Lumberjacks' season-opener at the Lumberyard on Saturday.

Harris later scored on an RBI single from Sam Barbee. RAL broke the game open with three runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by an RBI double from Dane Cheatley, and a two-run triple from Harris.

Kyle Wika pitched the first two innings before yielding to Barbee, who allowed four hits in the next 3 2/3 innings of his varsity debut. Harris fired the final 1 1/3 innings to notch the victory.

Doumit trips up Cardinals

CATHLAMET - Wahkiakum topped Winlock 18-6 in six innings of baseball on Monday, with the Mules showing three solid pitchers.

Ben Doumit hurled the first two innings for the hosts and get credit for the win, but Drew Windsor and Matt Willette also threw two good innings apiece. Blake Anderson (3-for-4), Willette (3-for-5), C.J. Bridges (2-for-3 with two walks) and Ty Bain (3-for-3 with two walks) all hit well for the Mules.

Wahkiakum plays Naselle on Friday.

CC BASEBALL

LCC's weekend goes 3-1

The Lower Columbia College Red Devils won three of four weekend games to improve to 6-2 in a pair of nonleague baseball doubleheaders at David Story Field.

On Saturday, LCC pounded Chemeketa 10-2 in the opener but dropped the nightcap 4-3, and swept Mount Hood 10-8 and 3-1 on Sunday.

"I'd say we're in the middle of the pack right now," LCC coach Kelly Smith said. "We have to get a little better with our offense and learn to take advantage of our chances. We're an experienced team except that the guys haven't learned to play our system."

LCC pounded out 13 hits in Sunday's opener, led by Richie Allen with four hits and five RBIs. Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the third inning, the Devils plated two runs on an RBI double from Sean Winston and a run-scoring single by Allen.

The Devils added three runs in the fifth with a two-run single from Allen and an RBI ground out by Shawn Peterson, plated three runs in the sixth on RBI hits from Winston, Allen and De'Andre Wheeler. The Devils got an insurance run on an RBI single from Allen in the eighth.

Jett Hart, Winston and Wheeler added two hits apiece. Mike Greene picked up the victory, and Brooks Lindsley earned the save.

LCC struck early in the nightcap with an RBI single from Lindsley in the first inning, and added two runs in the third inning on a run-scoring single from Lindsley and a botched fly ball to left field from Luke Zirkle.

Alex Levin pitched into the fourth inning before yielding to Chad Wagner, Conor Spink and Rye Phillips, who earned the save.

In Saturday's opener with Chemeketa, the Devils pounded out 17 hits and capped their scoring with a five-run eighth inning in a 10-2 victory.

Tyler Lichty pitched six innings before yielding with a 4-1 lead to Zirkle, who pitched the final three innings for the save. Lindsley, Peterson, Bo Lybeck and Jeremy Lorence all collected three hits apiece.

The Devils had four errors in the nightcap loss. Lindsley had two hits including an RBI single that plated Hart in the first inning, and Bas Nooij added a two-out RBI single in the fourth.

LCC visits Linfield University Wednesday, travels to Bellevue Saturday and entertains Southwestern Oregon in a twinbill beginning at noon Sunday.

SOFTBALL

Lassies split with 'Cats

Kelso played W.F. West twice in a preseason fastpitch jamboree Saturday at Lassie Beach, losing to the Bearcats 3-1 and then winning 4-1.

Crystal Nyman pitched the first three-inning contest, notching four strikeouts. Jenna DeRosier whiffed three in the second game.

Freshman first baseman Taylor Snow led the way at the plate, finishing

3-for-3 on the day. Andrea DeRosier, Jenna DeRosier and Nyman added two hits, and Kelli Snyder, Jamie Bolin, Brandy Vaughn and Marriah Lein each had a hit.

The Lassies play at R.A. Long on Wednesday in their season opener, host Mark Morris on Friday and host Sumner on Saturday.

BOYS SOCCER

Olivas tames Bearcats

CHEHALIS - Kelso opened its soccer season on Monday with an 8-0 road shutout of W.F. West.

Freshman Julian Olivas racked up four goals and two assists for the Hilanders, and Luis Navarro had two goals, both in the first half. Kelso got a goal each from Mitchell Tate and Cody Ash, and midfielder Kelsey Rosales distributed the ball well. The Hilanders took 21 shots.

"Overall, it was an excellent way to open up the season, obviously," Kelso coach John Fromdahl said. "The guys played team ball. It was really nice to see."

Kelso hosts Battle Ground tomorrow.

GIRLS TENNIS

Battle Ground edges Lassies

BATTLE GROUND - Kelso fell to Class 4A Battle Ground 3-2 in Monday's nonleague tennis.

The Lassies' Cindy Jewett won 6-2, 6-1 in first singles, and Maria Claxton and Holly Kress won first doubles 6-4, 6-3.

Kelso hosts R.A. Long tomorrow.

BOYS GOLF

Whealdon takes second

PORTLAND - Two Ilwaco golfers competed in the 64-man Portland Junior Open golf tournament at Heron Lakes Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday. The event drew competitors from Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia.

Camas' Daniel Snoey won the meet with a 4-under par 71-69, and the Fishermen's Jack Whealdon took second with a 74-68. Freshman Ryan Kukula was 22nd with a 77-84.

R.A. Long 8, Aberdeen 4 - Dylan Hopkins and Kersey Krieger had two hits and an RBI apiece, Josh Sorenson had two hits and Josh Johnson struck out four for RAL.

Girls tennis

Kelso 4, Battle Ground 1- Kelso's winners were Lindsey Gummel 8-1, varsity prospect Yui Choni (8-2), Amanda Wyatt and Samantha Humphreys (8-7), and Stevie Pinard and Laceigh Harris (8-2).

Boys soccer

Kelso 4, W.F. West 0- Kelso got two goals from Sam Baker and one apiece from Andrew Skreen and Travis Kohler.

C-squad report

Girls tennis

Kelso 1, Battle Ground 0- Elisa Bussanich and Carina Jung won their doubles match for Kelso, 6-0.
