Area youths invited as Longview library kicks off Teen Tech Week

The Longview Public Library is one of 20 libraries in the country, and one of five west of the Mississippi, to receive an ALA/YALSA Teen Tech Week Award. The $450 cash award and $50 worth of Teen Tech Week products will pay for activities, resources and services to celebrate 2008 Teen Tech Week March 3-8, a national initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association.
The goal is to help teens become competent and ethical users of technologies, including DVDs, databases, audiobooks, and videogames. Local teens will have free access to the Teen Health & Wellness database now through March 31. Log on to www.teenhealthandwellness.com with the user name teentech and the password teentech.

Today: 10 a.m.-8 p.m.: Teen Computer Tutors! PC 101 -Learn computer basics and create an e-mail account. Call 425-5300 to reserve an hour on Internet Computer No.6. Tutors are teens who have completed orientation. Anyone can sign up.
Tuesday: 5-6 p.m.: Online Chess -The Longview Public Library Chess Club and chess coach Michael Taylor host multi-player online chess on the Internet Computers. All youth (able to play chess) can call 425-5300 to reserve a computer.
6:30-7:30 p.m.: All entries into the Teen Tech Week promotional song contest will be played (mp3 formats) or projected (videos). Prizes for all, and a demo of new Rock Band equipment purchased with Teen Tech grant.
Wednesday: 10 a.m.-8 p.m.: Teen Computer Tutors - Learn how to place requests for DVD's 24/7, renew books online, take a free SAT tutorial. Check out the library Web site or look at the Teen MySpace page. Call 425-5300 to reserve an hour.
Thursday: 5-6 p.m.: Online Audiobook Discussion - What do "She's the Man," "10 Things I Hate About You" and "O" have in common? They're all based on Shakespeare. Join in a live online discussion with Genevieve Kolve,
Artist-in-Residence for the Columbia Theatre's Shakespeare Project. Sponsored by BookCrazy, the "see the movie, read the book" library club.
Friday: 5-6 p.m.: Tune In to Music - The Teen Music Club sponsors this chance to link your faves from our Playlist to the Project Playlist Web site and hear the music. Swap your CD's for new tunes, jam with our new Rock Band and learn to play a real guitar.
Saturday: 2-3 p.m.: MMPORG; MapleStory - Play MapleStory on the Library Computers, on your laptop with the library Wi-Fi, or join in from home. Watch the winning music video on library Web site.
Tuesday, March 11: TeenScreen Darkon - Go inside the fantasy world of Darkon as a group of players enter role-playing game that allows them to act as medieval soldiers and princes.
