By The Daily News
OREGON CITY, Ore. ---- Lower Columbia College overcame what head coach Jim Roffler called a "lackadaisical" first-half performance to storm past Skagit Valley 77-60 in the opening round of the Clackamas Invitational men's basketball tournament on Friday.
The victory moved the Red Devils (5-5) into a semifinal matchup against Umpqua of Roseburg, Ore., at 6 p.m. today.
LCC outscored the Cardinals 39-22 in the second half, with defense sparking the surge.
"It all started at the defensive end. We started challenging their shots and got our (fast) break going," Roffler said. "We made a better account of ourselves. We started off the game well, but we got kind of lackadaisical and let them back in it. I thought we played harder in the second half. We finally realized we were a better team than they were."
Former Mark Morris standout Michael Hallin had a double-double for the Devils with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Josh Troyer added 12 points, and Marice Tolliver chipped in 10 points, five assists and three steals.

Warriors slip past LCC
ONTARIO, Ore. ---- Lower Columbia College women's basketball coach Chad Meadors doesn't consider his Lady Devils' 63-54 setback against top-ranked Walla Walla on Friday as a moral victory.
"This was a four possession game, and all we had to do was make two stops and score twice," he said. "We had a chance to win with 30 seconds left, but we have to find a way to make fewer mental mistakes. This outcome was definitely unsatisfying."
The loss dropped LCC to 6-4 in nonleague play, while the Warriors move to 11-0. The Lady Devils play host Treasure Valley this afternoon at 3 in the second day of the round-robin event.
LCC netted 23-of-43 shots, which included a miserable 4-of-18 from outside the arc. Walla Walla hit 23-of-39 shots and made 16-of-21 free throws. The Lady Devils were 4-of-2 at the free-throw line.

CHEHALIS ---- Tanner Bradley rebounded a missed free throw and scored the game-winning layup with three seconds remaining to give R.A. Long a 54-52 victory over Anacortes in the opening round of the Bearcat Invitational boys basketball tournament Friday at W.F. West High School.
The Lumberjacks (5-2) play host W.F. West at 7:30 tonight for the tourney title. RAL beat the Bearcats on the road earlier this month.

The Seahawks converted a layup with :8 on the clock to take a 52-51 lead. Wallace decided against calling timeout, and Scott Pisapia raced the length of the court and was fouled with four ticks left.
