NASELLE nn Kyle Burkhalter tossed three touchdown passes and Tony Fletcher returned one of five South Bend fumbles 94 yards for another score to lead Naselle past South Bend 25-13 in a Pacific 2B League football game.
The victory pushed the Comets (7-1, 5-1 league) into a three-way tie with South Bend and Willapa Valley for the league lead. If all three teams win next week, a coin flip will likely determine the top three seeds to the playoffs.
“All three coaches would have to agree to have a tiebreaker or else it’ll be a coin flip,” Naselle coach Jeff Eaton said. “At the moment, we might be playing the best football, so we might be inclined to play it off. But I also have a quarterback (Burkhalter) with a shoulder that keeps popping in and out, so I might want to keep him off the field to keep him rested.”
Standout South Bend quarterback Randy Eang had a 24-yard run in the first quarter to set up his own 15-yard TD. But from there, Eang had problems operating against the Comets’ defense, which held the Indians scoreless until 4:50 remained in the game.
“Some people will say on the blogs that South Bend hurt itself with fumbles, but most of those were caused by our blitzing linebackers. They knocked the stuffing out of them,” Eaton said, referring to Fletcher, Jason Gradt, Alan Erickson and Nick Hines.
Burkhalter connected with Gabe See on 9- and 40-yard TD passes in the second quarter to give Naselle a 12-7 halftime lead. Burkhalter hit Erickson from 8 yards for his third TD pass in the third. With the Indians driving inside the Naselle 10 in the fourth period, Fletcher scooped up a fumble at the 6-yard line and rumbled 94 yards to make it 25-7.
Fletcher led the Comets with 75 yards on 15 carries, and Burkhalter completed 8-of-15 passes for 117 yards. Kevin Maki recovered two fumbles, and Mike Shirley, Cody Gilbert and Fletcher had one each.
Eang finished with 92 yards rushing, with Hines and Fletcher responsible for containing him, Eaton said.
Columbians level Loggers as
Allen rumbles for 227 yards
VERNONIA, Ore. nn Junior fullback Andrew Allen rushed for 227 yards on 32 carries and scored four touchdowns, and Rainier used a big second quarter to take command en route to a 40-7 whipping of Vernonia in a key Lewis and Clark 3A League football game.
With the win, the Columbians (8-1, 4-0 league) clinched its first league championship since 1993.
“Andy had a huge game,” Rainier coach Thor Ware said. “We used him in our Diesel package (direct snaps to him) and they couldn’t stop him.”
Vernonia (7-2, 3-1 league) travels to Clatskanie next Friday to determine the league’s No. 2 berth to the playoffs.
The Loggers recovered a fumble at the Columbians’ 22-yard line and scored three plays later to take a 7-0 lead. But it was all Rainier from there, with Allen finding the end zone three times in the second quarter (11, 1 and 3 yards) for a 22-7 halftime lead.
Allen had a 5-yard TD in the third quarter, and Branden Staehely (16 carries, 128 yards) scored on runs of 47 and 2 yards in the fourth.
Defensively, Hazze Walker had Rainier’s 20th interception of the season.

“Our defense gave our offense a short field,” Woodland coach Mark Greenleaf said. “We held Ridgefield to 133 offensive yards. Our offensive line got things clicking in the second quarter and allowed our running backs to run.”
Greenleaf praised the leadership of quarterback Eccleston, who completed 3-of-5 passes for 32 yards and carried the ball nine times for 19 yards. Cowden carried the ball 13 times for 69 yards.
Defensively, Colby Holt picked off two passes, with Denis, Jake Preston and Jared Hadaller adding one apiece. Cody Robinson had eight tackles, with Preston, Evan Clark and A.J. Harms making six apiece.

“We tightened up our defense in the second half and shut them out,” CR coach Pat King said. “We had a pair of fumbles early that let them in the game, but we settled down after that and played better defensively.”
Burgoyne, who completed 9-of-14 passes for 171 yards, tossed touchdown passes of 41 and 17 yards to Kyle Karnofski and Jay Daggy, respectively, in the first quarter as the Rockets took a 14-7 lead. Ilwaco (2-8, 1-5 league) plays Winlock in a district crossover game next Friday in Winlock.
“It’s been a long time since our last victory (Aug. 31), so we’re letting the kids savor it,” Ilwaco coach Kevin McNulty said. “It was good for our kids to get the win, because they played very well offensively and defensively.”
Ilwaco rushed 68 times for 388 yards, with Knick toting the ball 34 times. Knick has now carried the ball 190 times for 1,121 yards this season, making him the first player in the state to rush for 1,000 yards in four straight seasons since Jonathan Stewart of Timberline completed the four-peat in 2004.

The Mules’ junior varsity defense punctuated the win Friday with a goal-line stand in the fourth quarter.
Blake Anderson ran for 128 yards on 14 carries for the winners, and Anderson, Helms (fumble recovery) and Fudge were defensive standouts.

CC VOLLEYBALL
LCC drops two matches
GRESHAM, Ore. nn The Lower Columbia College Lady Devils dropped a pair of matches during the opening rounds of the Dorian Harris Tournament held at Mount Hood College on Friday.
LCC fell to Western Division rival and seventh-ranked Tacoma 30-27, 24-30, 17-30, 27-30, and was topped by fifth-ranked Whatcom 15-30, 24-30, 23-30.
Devils coach Marcy Gilchrist was pleased with her team’s effort against the first-place teams from the NWAACC’s Western and Northern Divisions.
“Emily Damschen and Tasia Trochim, they just attacked the ball and were aggressive,” Gilchrist said. “It was nice to see them come unglued a little bit.”
Damschen also served well and Trochim was a defensive standout for LCC. Stefanie Steadman (net play), Traci Goodin (defense) and Kacie DeRosier (setting) also played well. Hally Bridgewater returned to the court after recovering from a knee injury and “was a real inspiration,” Gilchrist said.
The bracket portion of the tournament will be conducted today.
